BV11, Track 6 - Les Mills team please research your music selections!
Am I REALLY the only one who has a negative, disturbing association with track 6?? Perhaps, since there are no other posts about it.....we just launched BV11 in the U.S. at some studios, so perhaps others will join me. While all songs cannot be fully vetted, I encourage the Les Mills team to do a little research about the music they include in their programs.

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly is the negative association you have with this song. Yes it is called Rise by Herb Alpert, and it went to #1 in the US in 1979, one of the few instrumental songs to do so. I personally love the track, along with the associated choreography, as it allows me to have a great stretch of my hamstrings and back at the same time. Please enlighten us further!

From that font of faultless knowledge (Wikipedia) comes the following: "Jill Phelps, musical director of the ABC soap opera General Hospital, decided to use "Rise" as the musical backdrop for the rape of Laura Webber by Luke Spencer. For several weeks afterward, the recording was played on the show to evoke the memory of Luke's act."
So the OP is concerned because the song was used a few times in a fictional story - *thirty* years ago.

OMG! Many instructors weren't even born then. Again, no disrespect, but I will take it for what it is today-an uplifting instrumental as background for some great flowing moves and intense hamstring stretches.

Oh totally there are much worse songs with innuendo... eg. pulsing one's legs open with Vive ball between their crotch while singing "Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me"... I don't think there could be any more innuendo than that... And yet I have no problem with that song either, because it's an awesome thigh and butt workout!

So I wasn't around when Herb Alpert recorded this (at least old enough to remember it) or even remember the soap opera, but I really like Rise. I think it's a nice funky transition from the heart-thumping cardio into the resistance work. My parents, in their early & mid 50's, really like it and that's all that matters - what do the PARTICIPANTS think of it.

Re: BV11, Track 6 - Les Mills team please research your music selections!
Hi I remember that scene in General Hospital. The scenes building to that gave it more impact. I felt for Laura when she went through what she did. As I remember, Lukes Sister Bobbie Spencer had a hand in what happened to Laura. Laura's life was a tragedy; she was illegally adopted by the Vining’s. She had no idea who her mother was. She then had to marry Scotty Baldwin who was no catch. She was hated by Bobbie Spencer and because of that Luke did what he did to Laura. It was shocking TV at the time.
There is a happier side to this. Luke and Laura married they became a (super couple) the wedding on General Hospital was a ratings winner. There marriage did not last however, they divorced got back together, in between Luke and Tracey Quatermaine got involved with each other. Laura was last seen in care she and Luke briefly reunited and she went back into psychiatric care.
I do sympathise with the original OP if you watched what we watched on General Hospital in the late 70's and early 80’s I still remember the scene it was so sad and disturbing, it was one of the rarest times I ever broke down and cried. Genie performed the role with such grace and strength she is one outstanding actors of our time. Kudos to Genie and Anthony Gere and their performance and bringing this issue to the forefront.
I remember back the 1970's what happened between Laura and Bill on Days of Our Lives that effected me seeing that on TV.
The thing is that we get involved with Days, Y & R, B&B and General Hospital we get involved. From Brooke and Ridge in B&B, John and Marlena in Days, Vaneess Prentice back in the 70's on Y&R and what she did to Lauralee Brooks and Lance Prentice.
Yes it is a Soap Opera but we watch them and they seem to impact on our real lives how ever that may be?
Coming soon a new concept no one has ever done before and it has been in the planning for the past 4 years.

Do I laugh or do I cry or do I bang my head repeatedly against a
brick wall? Hysterical laughter sounds good too come to think of it. But Fi please keep living you are one of the best group fitness instructors of our age and you play your part with grace, humility and you inspire us all. Mind you to be honest at this stage I think humpty dumpty might have a hard time getting past the les mills censors here at the moment. After all, exactly what type of egg was humpty and if he was broken exactly what happened? Who did humpty in and should he/she/them all get the chair? Then of course there are all those radical songs from the sound of music. I'm sure there is a line about sex toys amongst julie anthonys favourite things. Or perhaps....THERE SHOULD BE! Might make it a movie worth watching :) And then there's Hi Five a bunch of commie bastards!!

Re: BV11, Track 6 - Les Mills team please research your music selections!
Using a happy or non threatening song for an unpleasant scene is effective, an interesting twist, it plays with your perception. One good example is the song "Stuck in the middle with you", used for a torture scene the movie "Reservoir Dogs".
Anyway, I don't do Vive and I haven't seen the rape scene in question, but I know the song and as people say it was a while ago, who remebers it and who feels bad about it?
Oh, PIPERA!
Rod, I think you just Googled it all.
If I resemble this forum to the local pub, where I go to meet old and new friends and hear latest news and gossip, you - Rod, pipera - must be that strange fellow in the corner, blurting things out now and then, nobody listening, nobody caring.
Cheers!
