5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!

I now know of five instructors who have injured their backs after doing the plank off their step in BP 71.

Anyone else had any issues with this move?

I haven't, but something I am curious about on this track. On the DVD and pictures in the chereo notes they use just the bench top, which is how I taught it. I have attended other classes where they are using the risers. I wonder what (if any) kind of effect that may have.

We have started mixing releases again, I don't know if I would bring that track back unless it is requested by a member (which is a high possibility as I have a lot of Britney fans in my class).

Thats a good point as they all do it using their risers!?

I'm surprised they didn't get hernias!  They were obviously doing something beyond their abilities.

Another reason instructors should video every year.  Weed out some hangers on.

    I'll bet they're all freelancers.

Nice, Rex. That makes no sense at all. STOP being grumpy. Please? Smile

I haven't found this move to be that much more difficult at all, really. If people are doing it with risers maybe they should re-think that and just use the step alone?

Is it possible that they are doing something strange to their lower back in the transition from the first part of the ab move - the plate by the forehead - to the reverse curl? I've noticed that it's pretty quick.  Maybe they are twisting their spine to put down or pick up the plate? I really focus on maintaining a tight core when I do that.

I like this track a LOT.

Sorry, Melissa!  I thought this was a Mr Rocket chain puller take off on Jeremiah's thread.  Still not convinced it's not.

But I appologize in advance if this is a serious thread.

    No chain pulling Rex?

All but one are full time instructors Rex, why that should make a difference i have know idea? The best instructors IMO, including me, are freelancers!

Anyway,im thinking that it may have something to do with the abs work done on the step before the plank or a mix of the two. In the dvd Susans butt and lower back comes up off the step which i have seen done as low and high options.

The problem with some of the steps in the gyms they are the old style reabok steps and are much higher than the steps with risers. Im just going to keep this move grounded as i actually think it puts to much load (needless) on the lower back.

Well, we just launched BP71 a week ago and then promptly shut the studio down to refinish the floor.

So I'll see BP71 for the first time tomorrow morning right after our outdoor circuits program which has beau coup core work in it.

Also this particular BP class is for the hardcore participants, so I'm sure the instructor will go all out.

    I'll report back tomorrow afternoon.

While a little more challenging than normal, I can't say I found this hover that difficult to hold, although I've only ever done it with just a standard (old style) Reebok bench-top.

Now, when you say injured, are we talking about a mild back strain or out-of-commission? If the latter, there must be some mitigating factor like extreme decline (as vimeyer says) as I would have thought it unusual to incur injury through a static manoeuvre.

Agreed. I actually really liked the challenge of this move, in fact I may bring it back in my classes. I do see how using risers could be a bit risky though.

But I can't imagine it being that much riskier than a regular plank of which we've done many in past releases. I think the side planks from 66 were much harder...

For this release,  I don't find the abs track challenging with the risers.

Agreed on the fact that the 66 was tougher.

Re: 5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!

    Well,

I wasn't going to weigh into this one..BUT!

It's no risers. Just bench top. So instructors, if you're cueing it with risers, take another look and change it to the right way.

Next, the plate sits on the chest between the chest lifts and the lower ab phase, so no need to twist and turn.

For those of you with the Reebok Steps..a little different for you guys..you don't have the "hold" at the back..BUT the opton is to hold on the side of the bench.

And I always option the hover on the floor for those who need it.

Instructors, nor participants should be injured by any of these moves...unless they're doing them incorrectly..instructors, step up and coach it right!

    Rant over.

Agree 100% that there should be continuous certification methods.

WTF!! How to lose friends and alienate people. There are 1000's of freelance instructors, in the UK it's the norm to be freelance even if it's your full time job. This way you can maximise income by working at different clubs.

Infact, I'd go as far to say, the freelancers *may* be better instructors because they have to sell themselves as a business.

Agreed Stu..and yet, not many posts ago, Rex was full of "and who would look and weed them out".after Rick suggested the method our club uses..and now, volte face...

But I know you and I agree on continuous accreditation..even a self assessment if your GFM hasn't got the time..filming is a great tool..so is Rex sometimes..(had to add an incendiary remark..)
