you mean you still have energy after a Body Attack Class to do RPM??

why don't you reserve the RPM bike before the attack class?

The first few times I had people walk out of classes I did take it pretty personally but as has been mentioned you get a thicker skin after a while (and there's plenty of legitimate reasons why people might need to leave, not just because the class was crap). One gym I've covered at actually has a sign up asking that people respect the cover instrcutors as they would a normal instructor as they've often put themselves out at short notice to cover the class which otherwise may have been cancelled. Thought that was nice, not that people will pay that much attention to it.....

That's harsh. To be a cover instructor is to be a group fitness pariah??? You mean people walk out even if they haven't seen what you can do??? There's been two instructors I've been tempted to walk out on but instead, stood firm and stuck it through to the end. One was a cover instructor for Step and she was plum awful. I stuck with her to the end of the class because the optimistic side of me thought I should give her a fair chance as she could possibly improve as the evening progressed. She didn't. The other...well...

I have covered for a freestyle step instructor (I teach freestyle and Body Step) who is teaches very advanced stuff- lots of turns etc. No-one likes to cover for her because her class can be very rude- if she tells them she is on holiday the following week none of them will turn up. I covered at short notice- one girl left as soon as she saw me waiting outside the studio and another couple waited until I had my back turned checking the stereo before sneaking out.  I taught the remainder- some of whom were giving me daggers as if it was my fault the regular instructor was ill. After the class several people came up to me and said how much they enjoyed it!

Personally I have never walked out of a class but years ago I used to go to the above mentioned instructor's classes and we had a cover instructor who was completely hopeless. Most of the class walked but I felt sorry for her as I had only recently got my ETM qualification and knew how nervous she must have been so I stayed to the bitter end!

Yup, I still have the energy to do RPM right after Attack class. Maybe it is because of the adrenaline rush, or that BodyAttack just gives me energy to do more at the gym. "THE MORE ENERGY YOU GIVE, THE MORE ENERGY YOU GET"... hehehe

Bike reservation in our club is 15 minutes before RPM starts. So that means you can not reserve bikes before or after that.

What is the general policy regarding cover Instructors (i.e. is it an Instructor's responsibility to find their own replacement or is it the duty of the GFM?)

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

I personally have never walked out of a class, even tho i have had some pretty aweful instructors taking classes before. That's one of the reasons i became an instructor really, feel sorry for other participants who have to put up with crap instructors.

I have had 2 people walk out on me during my combat class. The first time was when i covered at a new club to me and they had only been doing combat for about 2 or 3 weeks. I went through all the moves before hand but this person really didn't get it and walked out about track 2 i think. I was only about 2 months into teaching and was shocked as that was the first time i had ever seen anyone walk out of a class before. It is safe to say i was a bit annoyed about it for a while but then realised i did all i could to try and prevent it and tried to not let it bother me too much.

The second time was about 2 months ago at the same club. Again it was a newbie to combat and i went through all the moves at the beginning to try and help her through the class and explained you will probably get lost the first time but the first and once you learn the moves you will be fine. It got to track 4 and this person was prancing around from the start, not listening to a word i said and in the end she gave up and went home. This time as i was more experienced it didn't bother me as much as if people are willing to listen to what you say you can't help them. Personally i think she was just put off by the fact it was the first time anyone had asked her to do any hard work and she just couldn't cope with it!!!!

The second time round was definately easier for me to deal with as i was more experienced. It is still not a good thing to see someone walk out of your class as you start to wonder what it is you are doing wrong even if you cover all the bases by going through technique at the beginning and going over stuff through class, maybe it is just you??? But at the end if the day if the rest of your class is happy and they keep coming back and say positive things about you, chances are it is just the odd person who has a problem with the workout themselves!!

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

I had one person walk out on me in Attack.  It was after track 4 and she came up to me and apologized, but explained that she felt like she was going to puke.

I was so proud, I high fived her on her way out.  Big Smile

Girl went to gear four whenever I did, had awesome form and was definitely future instructor material.  She rocked!

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

i dont think there is anything wrong with walking out of a class.  a gf class is supposed to be something special for the participant.... it is thier time  and thier energy.  if they arent getting out of it what they want.... why waste thier time, my time, and bring down the class with thier lack of enthusiasm.

i am confident enough in my abilities that i know i am giving them a solid accurate experience of what the class needs to be.  but it still may not be enough.  they may have unfair expectations or maybe they just arnt going to give it an honest shot... but still, its THIER time.  a gf class is about THEM.

Thank God the doors to our group fitness room are time locked. Once you're in, you're in it until the end. Kind of like getting on a roller coaster. You can try and get off, but it just makes more sense to get comfortable and ride that sucker out Wink

That is a good enough reason Big Smile  If you are finding that your classes are being stripped of joy and are turning into fault finding events, it's palpable you have the smarts and should be up on that stage.

What if someone gets injured during the class?

You simply move them to the side or the back of the room so they are not in the way of other participants! Wink

are you serious? thats like jail and doesn't sound good from a safety point of view.  I don't think I'd be going to that gym tbh.

I didn't walk out tonight, but I clocked the instructor and just didn't go in.  I've endured her classes a few times before and even taught with her, but I find her impossible to follow and get really frustrated so I decided to spare myself the upset and not go...

    Not tired are you???

Whoops! I forgot I posted here. Yes, of course I'm kidding! To our participants who leave early (irregardless of reason), we always sign-off with a "Thank you for coming!" Smile
