Re: Module training in around 2 months - any advice

    Hi Rob,

I went and did my Balance training last January.  Although I was certified in Combat, Pump and Attack, I was still freaking right out!  Simply because it doesn't matter what training you've had previously, you're doing something completely new!

I went to a Balance class for about two months before training (hey, I teach x amount of permanent classes/week, I have limited times to attend other classes in their entireity).

Yes, they will go through the usual Les Mills thing - circle of instruction etc.  I didn't find the Balance "challenge" too bad.  It was hard, but I've been through a lot worse (thinking of Combat where the skin of my feet was coming off, and Attack where I shed bodyweight, in sweat, in the plyo circuit, then had to do the 'beep' test right at the end of the first day).  I did have to hold poses for a freakishly long time compared to the other trainees, but the Master Trainer told me afterwards that it was because I was very strong (dammit!) and she could leave me there awhile whilst helping others.

I did find learning and cueing Balance very difficult (it's very different from Combat, and so much more depends on the instructors cueing), plus I had three days in a row (so not even a week to practise my final track, only one night).  Whilst I enjoyed my training, it was stressful, and I never really 'relaxed' (but I am typeA when it comes to my teaching!).

Even though I'm actively teaching it now, it is a program I really have to work hard at (well, harder than the others), as there is just so much info (safety, technical, right cue/right time) that needs to come through in the class.  It's not a 'soft' option for me, and has become my 'challenge' program.  I always script every class, dot my "i's" and cross my "t's" when it comes to the safety and chorey side of things.  I find it hard to learn as it's not always a 16/32 count choreography.  I really have to listen to the music to find the 'changes' moving from one pose to another.  But, the feeling of giving an excellant Balance class is second to none!

My advice is, this class is so different, it requires so much more of you as an instructor.  Be prepared to work hard at it all the time, from the initial training, all the way through to your permanent class/es.

Wow.....tomorrow's the day. That seems to have come around disturbingly quickly!

Thanks for all the advice in here over the last few weeks - going to re-read it all and will no doubt post again on Sunday night about the weekend.

Module number three though - I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd ever do one, let alone three.

Re: Module training in around 2 months - any advice

I can't believe its been two weeks already since I did mine - time is flying at a ridiculous rate at the moment!!!  Maybe that's because I'm trying to cram BP72 and BC42 into my head over the next two weeks then re-cram BB46 into the head for relaunching it at the gym.

Have a great weekend - if its anything like mine was it will be great.....  Not sure if that was because it was module no 3 or that I was doing it with friends - probably a combo of both but also a great trainer who made the environment very calm and after getting the first presentation out of the way I was actually looking forward to the rest of my presentations!!  That's just crazy!!!!!

Rob-I'm very envious.I'm toying with the idea of maybe doing the the training one day but at the moment- work...kids...life in general....well, you know how it is!

Looking forward to hearing your take on the experience. The very best of luck to you!

Could have been the Hips with the squishing of the goolies, or the Forward Folds with the standing split.  I think you got off lightly!

He could still get the hip track for next weekend!!!  46's isn't too bad - really easy to learn and not to squishy i wouldn't have thought and the Forward Folds for 46 is lovely......  I so wanted that one!

Re: Module training in around 2 months - any advice

Ouch....survived module 1 and things ache a bit today.

Great experience though and it's quite a good group of people on the training - the majority of people in there have already done one or two modules beforehand and as always there's a handful of people in there who have no teaching experience and haven't made it to a couple of balance classes before module training (that never ceases to amaze me.....).

Got the standing strength track to teach on Saturday afternoon which is alright as I quite like that track (we're doing 46) so learnt the chorry fairly quickly but the coaching tripped me up a bit. Teaching the track on Sunday morning went ok I thought - trainer said that everyone had to work on timing hwoever there wasn't anything specific mentioned to me about that but I did have a few technique things to work on (feet wider on warrior 2 and also knees above ankles on the squat). Taught it again in the afternoon and thought it went worse than the morning effort (I was feeling it by yesterday afternoon) however the feedback was that it was much improved.

Now all I need to do is learn 7 and 9 for this weekend......I have a bit of scripting ahead of me now :-s

Re: Module training in around 2 months - any advice

Standing strength is a toughie too as physical practice is a little tougher on the body than some of the other tracks!!  But at least you get a week to recover before the last day Big Smile  Having said that I was actually really happy in hindsight that it was all over in the three days as I didn't have to worry about my Pump and Combat classes in between - I could solely focus on Balance for three days which was lovely.  But jeez it was nice to get back to Pump Monday morning - familiar territory and words!!!!

There was no one in our group who had never done Balance and we were about a 50/50 split of those who had done LM training before(there was only 9 of us) ......  I reckon Balance is a tough one to start with especially for some who really struggled with timing - not surprisingly it was those who had never taught LM before.

Good luck with learning your tracks this week.  Do you have your challenge coming up too??  I found ours tough but oh the relaxation at the end was fantastic.... I think???  I'm sure I nodded off for some of it Big Smile  Guess I found my happy place - or I was just so damn knackered from being up late learning my track then up early the next morning to catch the train!!!!

    Sssshhhhh.......passed it.

I'm going for a pint to celebrate and will have a full report later (I think I've mentally blocked the challenge out though).
