Instructors, nor participants should be injured by any of these moves...unless they're doing them incorrectly..instructors, step up and coach it right!
100 % agree with you, Fifi
Also My instructor advice me to put the plate in front of the forehead for the crunch exercise and use your abs rather than the shoulders for this excercise because some are cheating using shoulders to lift..

Rex a tool, hehe thats funny tbf. Now, i also have to say putting the plate on your forehead puts extra pressure on your neck, another popintless thing to do. If you wanna focus on abs just hold it on your chest.
With regards to teaching it right, most are, but some have missed the 'no risers' being used in the dvd i think.

No, Mrrocket.
If you use your abs and do it properly, no extra pressure on the neck, only if you force using the neck, then you will feel extra pressure. It adds difficulty , that's what my instructor told me of course (who is a master trainer by the way ... )

NO...PURRRRRRLEASE!!!
Well im telling you different! It adds bugger all and is pointless. You get a much better crunch if its on your chest. When you put the weight close to your forehead and do a three count i can gaurantee if you look around your class you will see 99.9% of participants using their neck on the top count. If you lightly hold the back of your head with the weight on your chest the range is greater and the focus stays on the abs IMO :)

Re: 5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!
Not sure about the 99,9 % ..
Some will force of course but that's not correct.
I and most of the class do with the plate with forehead option per advice of our instructor and no pain in the neck but abs(for me and some friends)... ouchhh..
I think it depends on the option you take. Both work well but you have to do it properly in order not to force and feel the neck pressure.
because in the case of chest, some could also force using either neck or shoulders too..
My viewpoint.

Well,
I wasn't going to weigh into this one..BUT!
It's no risers. Just bench top. So instructors, if you're cueing it with risers, take another look and change it to the right way.
Next, the plate sits on the chest between the chest lifts and the lower ab phase, so no need to twist and turn.
For those of you with the Reebok Steps..a little different for you guys..you don't have the "hold" at the back..BUT the opton is to hold on the side of the bench.
And I always option the hover on the floor for those who need it.
Instructors, nor participants should be injured by any of these moves...unless they're doing them incorrectly..instructors, step up and coach it right!
Rant over.
Good rant! I teach the plate "resting on the chest"....but in all honesty, for me that doesn't work, - no room there...I've tried putting it on my abs and THAT makes the reverse curl impossible, too. Just had a thought that someone might be doing it the way I need to do it. It was also impossible to put the plate on my chest for the last release, but I could rest the plate on my abs and do just fine with that one.
If anyone has a fix for THAT, please let me know.

I thought the cue was to hold the plate at the forehead, like the peak of a cap, but not actually touching. Presumably for that very reason. If one uses anywhere near a decent weight for abs, the track fast becomes a test of triceps endurance to hold the plates in a near "skullcrusher" position. In which case, having them on the chest would be logical.

Ive been putting the plate on the floor overhead right where I grab the top, its much faster, you dont need to look at all and aids in the second two (quicker) transitions. I too have issues with it on my chest.
Thoughts on this being acceptable?

Re: 5 instructors injured cus of abs track in 71!
RexFury: I'll see BP71 for the first time tomorrow morning right after our outdoor circuits program which has beau coup core work in it. I'll report back tomorrow afternoon.
Well, there was a hard frost on the ground and a cold breeze for circuits this morning. Sort of hard to get down on all fours for the first 100mtr bear crawl, but that's what it's all about.
No problems with the abs track in BP71. Instuctor & I did it on a step bench with 2 risers for her and 3 for me.
I would have liked a little padding on the bench for the butt lifts. I found a place directly overhead below the bench to put my fingers. Also put my 5kg plate back there and couldn't find it by feeling around one time.
I have no clue as to why there is the forward and back motion during the plank since it adds nothing, but my toes on the bench didn't like it when I shifted forward. A big nothing in reality.
All benches were crosswise to the stage so no one, instructor or participant, had to look forward during the plank which would have been really tough on the neck.
Rex
Excuse me... May I motivate you?

Re: 5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!
I'm not planning on saying anything much here because I can barely remember this track now! I think though that I had a little problem a couple of times transitioning off the step with the plate to the hover. It was the actual transition that got me. It wasn't anything serious but it was just a matter of not really thinking what I was doing. More just a tiny bit of pain as I was transitioning than an injury though. To be honest though, I don't actually like doing the abs on the step at all. I just don't think it's really adding anything much to the workout. But hey, I teach it and I teach the 'benefits' and I move on with my life and my class :)

Re: 5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!
Well guys those that are having trouble with have plenty of time to get it right - its in BP72 as well. Moving hover off the bench with an added extra........ And the reverse curls too...... We were very clearly told to use the bench top ONLY!!! Or if the hover off it is too difficult to not use the bench top at all........ Just did Brisbane workshop today - and woohoo for next quarter in Brissie as Glen is heading our way

Re: 5 instructors injured cus if abs track in 71!
Yeah, bench top only for the hover.
Honestly, I did think (as an instructor that has pretty good core strength from years of kickboxing) that the Abs track in BP71 was a pretty effective workout if done correctly. Even I was sore (and that's saying something) every time I did it - it burned like nothing else, it was tough!
BP72 is a step up from BP71.
