Why do Cooldowns have to be such downbeat and dreary songs?

Let me be myself was my favorite cooldown until the song was used in a GEICO commercial (USA), which pretty much kills a song for me. Stupid cavemen...

    LOL, Vim,

I have the same musical taste as you...  Smile

There's another one I like a lot : Christina Aguilera in the 60s (Hurt is it?)

I'd rather stick bamboo splints under my fingernails than listen to that Xtina song ever again..I used to burst out laughing when the violins kicked in..dear oh dear..

Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol would have to be my favourite....

Both of those songs just give me flashbacks to my Body Flow training.

    SG7982:

What I mean by Chicken and Egg is did they use the song because they thought it would make a good coodown, or did they use the song because it's a Pink song and they couldn't fit it in anywhere else.

Because it's Pink, you never can tell.

I appreciate the concept that it's supposed to be calming, but you can be uplifting and calming at the same time - as World In Union from Combat demonstrates IMHO.

ck1 rightly brings up You Raise Me Up and I'd also bring up Angels from 56, We Are The Champions from 40 and What a Wonderful World from 35. But that's 4 songs from about 40 releases. A really bad return on decent music.

Heather Small's Proud (37) would rate as uplifting in my books.  As would Search for the Hero (17, 48 in Aus/USA).  What a wonderful world (34) is certainly not depressing.  I don't know what you read into The Prayer (32) but I don't see it as a downer.  Any Andrea Bocelli works for me.  That should be enough to be going on with...

Re: Why do Cooldowns have to be such downbeat and dreary songs?

I happen to like the recent BJ cooldown "See you in my nightmares" because it reminds me humorously of a recently disposed of girlfriend.

It has that "feel" for appearing sequentially in all the other LMI programs.  You'll love it or hate it, but a warning : the rhythm will grow on you.  Try tuning out the words, if you want.

"Uplifting" be damned!  And those sicky sweet songs too.

Re: Why do Cooldowns have to be such downbeat and dreary songs?

Personally I would love to hear some Power Metal Ballads for the cooldown:

    Hammerfall - The Fallen One

Manowar - Master of the Wind

Or old Delerium songs (from the albums before they had any vocalists)

Or any of these songs, ESPECIALLY Becomming X

1 Suddenly (Ashley Tisdale) - 58 BPM Pop
2 Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin') [T-Pain featuring Yung Joc] - 80 BPM Hip Hop
3 Siberia [Backstreet Boys] - 80 BPM Boy Group Ballad
4 Slipping Away [Mariah Carey] - 80 BPM Love Song
5 Silver Inches [Enya] - 86 BPM New Age
6 White Flag [Dido] - 89 BPM Pop Ballad
    7 Becoming X [Sneaker Pimps] - 73 BPM Club
8 Because of You [Kelly Clarkson] - 70 BPM Pop
    9 Tiempo [Erreway] - 78 BPM Spanish
10 Dreamland [Adrian Sutton] - 96 BPM Trance
11 Yeha Noha (Wishes of Happiness and Prosperity) [Sacred Spirit] - 94 BPM Native American
12 Where is the Love? [The Black Eyed Peas] - 94 BPM Hip Hop Ballad
13 My Friend [Captain Jack] - 95 BPM Ballad
14 These Words (I Love You, I Love You) [Natasha Bedingfield] - 97 BPM Pop

    15 Space [Bond] - 98 BPM Techno

    ... Trance ...

Now this is a good idea. There's plenty of good melodic trance tracks by the likes of Solar Stone etc that would suit the relaxing atmos of a cool-down.

Is that an un-biased opinion Mr. Trancedental?  But I agree completely, my favorite radio station is MusicalStarstreams, it used to come on "The Wave" when I lived in Los Angeles on Sunday night from 12pm - 2am, I used to tape it cuz well that's bedtime.  But I loved all the trance music, I still listen to it online on www dot musicalstarstreams dot com, trance = perfect cooldowns.  But you won't get any top-40 so I doubt Les Mills will want anything to do with it.

You're probably right. Few trance tracks except the more processed and bland offerings seem to make it into the mainstream charts. As you probably do, I have loads of suitable tracks that are definitely off the radar.

Though artists like E-Type, Cascada and Liz Kay weren't that well known but got picket up by LMI. Perhaps we should take that as encouragement to suggest a few of the better, yet more obscure, tracks out there.

    Rick,

I'm not sure how you call trance music but here in Europe trance  music is faster than the kinds of E-Type, and Cascada.

For me, Liz Kay, Cascada are rather 'dance' music as we call it here

Ah, well now you've opened a can of worms.

As with pretty much every genre of music there are a number of sub-genres. For example, are we talking about Goa Trance of the type popularised by Oakenfold, or Underground Trance as appeared in mixes by the likes of Sasha and Digweed, or even Psy Trance of the Otherworld variety.

Most people though would probably consider it what I'd call Euro Trance. Compilations by Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Paul Van Dyk tend to represent this, and easily encountered in the early to late 90s at clubs like Cream, God's Kitchen and GateCrasher.

    Clear as mud?
