an impossible request for an unattainable track

Hi all,  I hope I'm not acting out of line here and if so, let me know and I will delete this thread immediately....

However, I wonder if there's any RPM longtimers out there who can help me find a track from the VERY FIRST release...  RPM #1

It's called "Ray Of Light" by Madonna and I believe it was the Pace track.

My groups would eat this track right up and I would love the opportunity to be able to present it to them.... I have a very 'urban' group who love to live fast and play hard, which is why I'm searching this particular track out for them.  I would buy the release myself if I could.... but good luck with that Sad

Please PM me very kindly, if you think you may be able to help me out....  I would be very appreciative...

    Cheers!!!

    Hi Larry,

I don't have the music or choreo for this release, but i have seen the choreography. The version of the song seems to be same as the normal Madonna release (just over 5 mins), but i think you'd be breaching some sort of law or agreement by purchasing it on iTunes and playing it in an RPM class (not a legal guy so I wouldn't know).

The choreography back then was a little interesting  - as most things are when a product is new :-) ... I seem to recall that track had a little technique called 'running', which i suppose is some sort of standing attack done at a very fast pace. So I don't think the choreo from that release would work now, but there may be the right breakdown of pace intervals to make it suit the modern format if you wanted to have a go...

But in short, your legal position would probably be the biggest stumbling block :-(

    Rgds

Thanks a lot Mike- I was aware that RPM has weathered some very necessary changes as to how it has become better and more effective with regards to techniques....

thanks for your description of the chorey too, I think I will just forget about it since it sounds way out of line with what's required for an acceptible Pace track these days.  Maybe we'll get lucky and Glen or Dan will rechoreograph it for a future release like they did with some other tracks, especially in BodyPump.

Where in the world did you ever see this track get presented????  You must have been cycling for a long time!

    Hey Larry,

It looks as though you and I are on the same misssion at the minute.  I have RPM 11-39 currently and am sniffing out the last 10 as we speak.  I teach in Dubai, UAE, where there seem to be a high number of old skool Rpm'ers who have the material.  I was talking to a colleague about the early stuff and he said that the choreography was pretty ropey, but in all honesty, if you have been teaching for a while, you should be able to apply the new theories and principles of the Rpm ride to the track.  The same colleague said that he thinks he could dig it out for me in the very near future, so as soon as I get my hands on it, I will send it to you.  I have a couple of instructors hunting for it, so I will defo be getting it very soon.

Re: an impossible request for an unattainable track

What exactly is permissible concerning older tracks?  Given the new guidance on length of time for racing and standing climb, etc., isn't some degree of rechoreographing required for anything older than twenty-three or so?  And if this is true, is it necessary to have the old choreography for, say, release 4?

Also, for an instructor to teach a certain release, does that instructor have to own the release materials personally or can he or she borrow from the club or another instructor?

Finally, occassionally people talk about songs not in any release -- for example Christmas stuff.  If such songs are choreographed i.a.w. recent instruction and placed appropriately, is it still an RPM class?

Often people ask similar questions; and then someone else replies something like "I don't know if it's legal," and that's the end of it.  So I'm asking for some guidance on what is and is not legal.  We have tried to get answers from the regional reps, but they seem to make it up on the fly and they are usually just glorified instructors.  If the licensing agreements with clubs are silent on this stuff, then what else is there but suggestion and guidance?

Re: an impossible request for an unattainable track

Dan had a post about this some time back.  I'd have to do a search to find it.  There are guide lines now for the new releases on how long to do a standing attack, etc., that can be formatted into the older releases to make them work and to make them safe.  The legal issues are a bit tricky.  Les Mills would like everyone to own their own music.  It is illegal to copy tracks and share.  They have to pay big bucks for the licensing of the songs, etc. . . BUT I know sharing happens.  Especially for a new instructor who wants more music, etc.  It isn't an RPM class unless you are using licensed RPM music and choreography.  During Christmas, we advertise a Holiday Cycle class.  It follows the same RPM format, but we don't say RPM because we aren't using their stuff.  Hope this helps.  If you have the time, I would try to search on that post that Dan laid out all the guidelines.  It wasn't too long ago.
