    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    In the past I would've definitely agreed that BODYPUMP is not sufficient resistance training to build muscle however now I disagree - the only resistance training I have done for the past 4 months is Pump and I've built a good 6 kilos (13 lbs) of muscle! I get comments everyday about how much better I'm looking  - granted this may also be because I've dropped my cardio back (at one point I was doing 11 combats per week - now only 5 or 6) but still - the fact remains I am gaining a significant amount of muscle from pump alone. Just make sure you're busting your gutt on every set and you'll see results. You're not gonna get them from any workout if you just cruise through it.

    While I think it's a fantastic idea I no longer do. I'm actually getting fantastic results now I've upped the amount of pump classes I teach per week (this week was 4) and I really think the other days are best served as recovery days.

    You? Recover? Who do you think you're trying to kid!!!

    *grin*

    and where can you find the time to do extra workouts.  I currently teach 4 classes and participate in 3 others getting one day off from the gym, don't see myself finding time to get in some weight lifting (as much as i want to)

    Haha - well depends on your definition of "recovery" I guess. I did mean recover from weight training - I still teach combat on my "recovery" days! Stick out tongue

    Yes, I check your profile and now. And that's a difference. You are more toned than before

     Before, I only did circuits and now combined with BodyPump, that's the best combination to gain muscles. I did gain like 5kg and that's quite a big difference too. Wink

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    I tend to do weights outside of BP once per week while twice is preferable for optimal results based on my body type. I have the genetics to be a good runner/cyclist but when it comes to upper body strength my family tree is leafless. For my slender build I'm both surprised and happy with the amount of muscle I've been able to add and credit heavier reps done outside of BP for about 1/2 the development. I love the BP classes but without heavier lifting outside the class found it difficult to improve.

    This is what I struggle with too. I LOVE weight training. Every week I say to myself, "This week I want to get into the weight room, even just once." But it never happens. I teach classes pretty much every day of the week, and -

    - I don't like to lift weights before class, because I want to save as much energy as I can for my class(es);
    - I don't like to lift weights after class, because after a long day at work plus 2 hours of classes, I just want to go home;
    - I don't lift weights when I have a day off because rest days are so few and far between, and;
    - I also stress about muscle pain. What if I get so sore from my weight room workout that I can't properly execute the moves in front of my classes?

    I only teach 2 Pumps a week (3 would be my ideal) and I use the heaviest, most obscene weights I can manage so that I feel like I am working my muscles to the limit each week. I think my muscles look and feel pretty strong, even though I'm "only" doing muscular endurance training.

    A few months ago I hired a personal trainer, more than anything because I felt like if I invested money into it and had scheduled workouts planned with him, I'd be more inclined to follow through with weight room workouts than I'd ever be on my own. Major investment, but it definitely did the trick; I wish I was in a financial position to do it again, in fact. There were a few down-sides: my appointments with him were at 9:00 at night after all my classes were done. It made for a late night, and I was spending about 4 hours a day at the gym (which I personally think is ridiculous, but to each his own!). However I definitely saw incrdible results in my physique AND I increased *all* of my weights in BodyPump. Most excitingly: for the first time in nearly 9 years of BodyPump, I was actually able to increase my biceps weight! They say strength training can positively influence your muscular endurance, and the proof was in the pudding for me.

    I wish I could justify a few hours per week in the weight room, but I don't want to run the risk of spending even more time at the gym than I already do.

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    ErinC,

     For me, it was the reverse situation. Thanks to BP classes, I increase my weights lifting and have more stamina. Maybe it was because I did circuits for some time and changing the workout schedule helps me benefically to put more on weight in lifting weights

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    Hi Erin, your post is great. Well done you.  I had exactly the same issues and ended up with the same outcome, although I was too cheap to pay a PT so I got an old bodybuilder friend to help me out. It would be great if LM gave us some more help on how to do this, like they did with drills to develop higher cadence in thelast rpm release.

    Maybe you could just drop the participant classes and see an improvement.  OR trade a participant class for a weight session with another instructor as a motivator.

    Frankly, your post sounds a little self aggrandizing to me.

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    One session in the weight room a week with a fellow BP instructor as motivator should be a given for those peeps that want to look BIG.  No real other reason to do it though, except ....

    Okay, my son and I did the above for several years simply to get in each other's face.  So few opportunities to truly communicate with your kids.  I learned this from doing it with an engineering design team during lunch hour - When else can you get in the project manager's face and demand, "Three more reps, ya wussy!"

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    there are several reasons to do it:

    Les Mills (most recently in the 2009 Q4 revolution mag) tell us to "be authentic" and teach in the essence of the program. In other words "to look the part". The essence of pump program is "strength and tone".

    So obviously instructor is supposed to look like someone who is strong and toned. To me that means they lift something heavy and they have visible muscle definition. I don't think that is unreasonable.

    So the purpose of getting into the gym is to build that look, and to build that "authenticity" of someone delivering a class about lifting weights. (yeah i know it is kinda dumb that people who present the program are not purely products of the program, but there's marketing for every product right?)

    So that is the reason to do it. It is not about aelf aggrandizment (is that a word?) or vanity. it is about taking yourself seriously, professionaly and being BELIEVABLE, or at least "selling it" effectively.

    Now I would rather just teach pump in my skinny body, and do a few classes as participant because I prefer to do pump than go into the gym. But I force myself to go to the gym (which is a second preference) in order to advance as instructor. So when I go there, I feel like I am missing out on pump. It;s a legitimate mental block to doing the work. Just something to work through. That is what eskwan is talking about.

    I guess there are some things you can't understand unless you walk in a person's shoes.

    Re: Are you lifting weights in the gym???

    I do not quite agree with on the fact to 'look the part'

    Some of my instructors are not toned, and they teach greatly BodyPump classes.

     If you want to be believable, the important thing for me is you give your participants the motivations to come back often to your classes.

    the look of someone who is strong and toned is a plus.

    it's not my personal opinion, it is what LM tell us as instructors.

    I guess some follow the guidelines religiously and some do not...
