    launching LM at a non-gym?

Has anyone out there launched LM classes at a dance studio, or another non-gym type location?

I'm a former GFM for a big chain gym company that had six LM formats, but now working with a non-profit dance company and school and hoping to introduce LM there.  I'm wondering if anyone out there has any similar experience to share?

Thanks in advance for any guidance... :)

I once did a demo of Combat in a local community centre and they were very keen to launch the programme. I looked into the licencing costs and it was impossible to make it work.

I don't know how much the licence fees are inother parts of the world but in the UK the fee is the same whether you are a mega big Gym Chain or a non-profit community centre.

Only way I could have done it would have been to look at another programme like Kick FX which doesn't require a licence - or just do a kick-box style freestyle exercise to music class instead.

It's about time Fit Pro or LM brought out a siding licence scale for smaller venues or people wanting to teach it as a single instructor in the UK. They are loosing loads of potential revenue there! I have trialled Combat in a few senior schools and they loved it. They would have put it onto the timetable for the School until they looked into licence costs!!

I too was thinking of another programme like Kick FX myself as well as teaching Combat as I really think there are a lot of Schools out there that would benefit. I would like to teach Combat or Balance there but the licensing is just to prohibitive!

I had my own licence for a year for combat it was really sucessful but the licence fees crippled me in good monhs i was making a fair bit but come the poorer times i would still have to pay the licence in the end i gave up cause i couldnt afford the £100 to fitpro ..

it shouldnt be the same as big gyms silly really but hey their loss..

    Breaker:

Freestyle Fitness Yoga is the answer for Balance equivalent - I don't know what it is like - I've heard it described as "Poor Man's Body Balance" - but there is no licence fee and you have ability to make up your own chorry.

I agree Breaker there should be a sliding scale of fees - and also the ability for individual instructors to licence themselves.

I am just thinking that idea with Bodybalance :) I was asking the same for Bodyvive asked them about it and they said I need to have a fitness facility. I read that starting up could be as small as 10,000 dollars Aust to get a small facility up and running.

Re: launching LM at a non-gym?

more facilities in the US are trying this model.  best examples:

Body Empower - Melrose, MA - LM only
Group X Factor - Foxboro, MA - LM only
    Bodyworks - Lawrence, MA - LM & Free-style

All are facilities offering just GF (Bodyworks might offer other programming types throughout day - freestyle options - may have dance classes etc)

Consider your target audience; potential instructor base; marketing plan/$ to make it all happen.  if those 3 are in place, you can really consider doing it & being successful.  would suggest you connect w/ your local LM agency - LM Mid Atlantic, talk to Erin there, and toss ideas past her for some advice.  they can give you info on other facilities in Mid Atlantic area doing Studio based facilities

    good luck!
