    Body Pump and weight gain?

I just wondered if anyone could help me. I wondered if anyone has experienced a little weight gain doing the Body Pump programme. By that I mean due to an increase in muscle. I am just curious as this questions seems to provoke different reactions all round. Many thanks Smile

hi thereyou will find after doing pump for a while you will start to tone up and people may say you look as if you have lost weight ,you are toning the body and muscle weighs heavier than fat,so its all good as you also burn calories more efficientlySmile

You have to remember, in Body Pump you are doing low weight and high reps which builds lean muscles, whereas body builders (and anyone who spends all their time at the gym solely in the weights room) do high weight and low reps which builds visible muscle.

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

This is a difficult question and the answer is yes and no.  It depends on a number of variables, whether you are a male or female, what sort of shape you are in to begin with, nutrition.  Group fitness very often boxes everyone into the same box just because they are doing the same program. I would say that provided your nutriton is very good and you train really hard on each track you can easily develop a world class physique without too much trouble at all.   As for weightgain it would be realistic to say 2-3 kg, anymore than that is when you maybe risking getting too much bulk.    Even though I have been doing Pump for a number of years I still tend to add a few extra kilos of muscle during winter time. I find my body starts to feel a little heavy when I hit 68 kg. I am a little pedantic I suppose.  At 5''8 that is a pretty good weight, I find I am lighter when I am doing Rpm and on the Rowing Machine. Also summer weather tends to lean you out, well it does in Queensland.

i gained 7 lbs in my first year of pump....but my body fat dropped from 21 to 15....so I can be assured that it was lean muscle mass gain and fat mass lost....i would rather weigh 145 and be at 15% body fat than weigh 138 and 21%....IMO

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

i've gained around 2 kilos since i started pump nearly a year ago, but my body fat has decreased one hell of a lot, i'm not sure of percentages but i lost a lot of weigh through cardio exercise before i started pump so maybe it was a little more obvious when i started to put on the weight. I don't mind though as my muscles have become very defined and my whole body is toned and i generall look an awful lot better.

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

I have gained about 5 pounds in the last 6 months with doing pump 3 to 4 times a week. I panicked, although my clothes don't feel tighter!! :) Checked my body fat and it's down to 17% so I would tend to agree you do gain a bit of weight with pump, and can make you feel bulkier. I also wear a HRM during classes, which reads I burn approx 500 cal in one session of pump, can't be bad! So keep pumping!!

Is there an easier way to find out your body fat percentage other than taking measurements and feeding them to a web thingy for figuring out your body fat percentage?

Your gym might have an electronic body fat analyzer? Usually, they look like scales you stand on or they are held with both hands.

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

Why are we still hung up on weight?

Surely if your body looks leaner, is stronger and feels better then you are moving in the right direction?

I think we spend too much time trying to work out how much of our body weight is muscle and how much is fat and tend to get distracted from the real important reasons why we are exercising.

Remember that most of these body fat measuring devices are rather inaccurate and aren't really telling you anything beneficial despite what the manufacturers may tell you.

I believe that Body Pump gives most people the best body they have ever had and you can tell that by simply looking in the mirror, who cares what the scales say! That's something to smile about Big Smile

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

Very true. Mirrors are a must in Pump.  I also think they are essential for technique also. It is much harder training without mirrors.

Re: Body Pump and weight gain?

Im not so sure about the mirror thing....we don't have them in our studio and the members have good technique....there is also research out there that indicates that when men get in front of mirrors they focus on things like techinque and muscles but women tend to tear themselves apart and focus on what they don't like about thier bodies and it distracts from the work out....
