    The benefits of watching yourself...

So it was time for my yearly review, and the group fitness manager provided me with a copy of the class that she watched for me to watch as well. This is the first time that I have watched myself teach since I videotaped myself for certification. All I can say is-WOW! Not that I was amazed at how great of a teacher I am (watch out G! Surprise), because I am by no means a master and have a lot of things I can work on, but by the fact that I am able to see things, hear things, and fix things that I would not have even been aware of otherwise. For instance, this was one of the first times that I got to see what my jungle jump (from 43) looks like. So my question is: how many of you do this on any kind of regular basis? Does anyone else find it useful? Maybe this is something they should encourage more in training...

I do this every once in a while, or sometimes when I practice.  It is such a valuble tool.  I think back to what I looked like in the cert video vs now, more than a year later, and the difference is huge.

Filming yourself is the best thing you can do because it is the only way to see what your class truly sees and hears.

I filmed myself in January (first time since certification) and while it was scary I learned so much more about how I could improve.  My grand plan is to film every January and July...

    I highly recommend it!

    Hey,

Our Jam team practices facing a mirro...it helps immensely! I wish we video taped more... just hard to place it in a crowded room. I agree it would probably help realize things I say WAY too often! Or if I repeat, or if I need to bring the enrgy up and down more.

Re: The benefits of watching yourself...

Practicing in front of the mirror with other instructors help with 70% of your skills. But while practicing your mind is focused on what move is coming next or what cues to give. Plus you can only reliably see yourself from the front.

When watching a video of myself I cringe everytime I make minor mistakes! And I go, "Why didn't I catch that?".

Watching a video playback allows us to critique ourselves better, and see ourselves from a different angle (if we place the camera off-center). Highly recommended for everyone!

In fact, thinking of getting a video camera just to video myself frequently!
