Re: combat vs. turbo kick box

As I have never taken a ´turbo kick box class´ I can not offer an absolute informed opinion.  I believe anyone has the right to express themselves creatively in any manner or form, so out of curiosity, I searched ´youtube´ and found various videos of it and I have to say...... ¨¨What the?¨¨

While I am sure video clips can hardly give the real essence and feel to a class, I found the instructor self induldged and performing rather dangerous ballistic movements with poor technique in both cuing, contact and form. The persons in class looked confused and disengaged. Í wont knock it completely as I havent tried it, but it certainly does not look like a class I´d take time out of my day to do. Apart from the grating personality of the instructor and her gyrating pelvic work it would be best called something else rather than any association with ´kickboxing´. There was also a reference that she stated that her classes were the only classes ever to use real music?? What is that about? Quote... ¨¨all other classes use elevator music¨¨... what?

I have taken various boxing and kickboxing style classes over the last 20 odd yrs and as an instructor, ¨Thomas the Promise´´, Billy Blanks etc, offered some initial styles, even some awesome classes were produced by pro boxers and provided us with some great basic work to improve upon. BodyCombat is the revolution, it is evolving and transforming every release.  I dont know who you have been taking BodyCombat classes from but you seem to be missing the essence, learning and technical aspects of the class. The music is there as VARIETY not everyone likes to listen to repetitive heavy bass, hip hop or sometimes offensive rap while they exercise...I enjoy most all music but think music selection is an extrememly difficult task and your not going to please everybody all the time.  Its about finding a driving beat and rhythm to work combinations of choreography with and as I mentioned, safety... throwing uncontrolled punches and kicks with bad technique to fast music is going to cause injury to participants... be careful!

BodyCombat is emerging as the best group conditioning class that contains a combination of AUTHENTIC martial arts/boxing/kickboxing/tae kwon do/muay tai/ based training techniques. Its focus is about safety and group exercise and having contact and expression in class. Its up there with the best classes I have experienced to date.

Do what makes you feel good, but I´m sorry that you are missing out on what BodyCombat is all about.

.... Oh, and speaking of quality products?  The "rounds" are more expensive (about 25% more expensive) and sometimes are reaaaaaaally bad quality...

Final analysis?  Combat kicks Turbo's butt.  Mercilessly.  Like, KO'd it. It's down on the mat and Combat is stomping it's pretty little blonde head over and over and OVER.

Did you notice that the poster who started the discussion has not replied, not even once?  Probably just enjoys winding people up and is currently posting about the necessity of meat on vegetarian websites or similar

still, "Turbo kick monica" is worth seeing    Big Smile

WOW - there is heaps of footage of Turbo Kick Box on You Tube. I thought I would look it up out of curiosity. Looks like a lot of ladies like it. My fav would have to be 'Turbo Kick Halloween 2007' - I think they're in a shopping centre.

I'm still going to stick with Combat though.

Comparing BodyCombat to Turbo Kick is a bit like comparing the SAS to a netball team...

You have got to be f-in kidding.I don't know how old this blog is but I just had to chime in. Man are u blind TK is weak.Coming from a long past of martial training & instructing I can tell u BC has the realistic moves you could use to protect your self if needed.TK  has aerobic moves with poor formed punches, kicks, blocks & whats with the fascination with the speed bag moves? BC on the other hand has many different styles mixed into realistic movements used in those styles. Look as a martial arts instructor I do know the difficulty's with creating a program that works for every one but along with diversity we need to think of safety, realism, opponent imagery, fun etc. I do no teach TK or BC I stand at the fence looking in.I believe if your going to call it kick boxing it should resemble kick boxing .TK is renamed TKO. Combat is a mix of what ever works and a mix of  close to authentic group martial arts moves trumps this wantade kick boxing aerobics craze.I believe as instructors in all disciplines we need to remember it is our responsibility to make sure we are teaching reality! If your just punching air with out a meant target your just punching air. If you punch & kick with poor form in practice you will fail in real application.I do know that not every one that takes cardio kick classes want to learn self defense but why not teach proper technique's in a martial arts based class. BlaBlaBla I could bore u some more but you see my point BC keep up the good work.TK find OTHER work. Kick ass & take names.

Re: combat vs. turbo kick box

I have just been on to Youtube and checked out a couple of Turbo Kick videos, it doesnt even come close to be being as good as combat.  All i saw in the videos was people waving their arms around and it looked more like a dance class with some kicks and punches thrown in for good measure.  Hmm

I am a Bodycombat and Turbokick Instructor, quite frankly I think this disscussion and comparison is quite Juvenile! They are different formats with very different followings. I am proud of the martial arts focus of bodycombat, but I am equally proud of the rythm and flow of Turbokick. If you haven't really tried it then don't slam it. Byh the way I will vote that the music in Turbokick totally rocks! To those who have posted very negative reviews of Turbokick, I say....grow up! There is room for more than one style of group fitness kickboxing. Karate, Kung Fu , Tai Chi, and now MMA all have a place in the martial arts community, so too does Tae-Bo, Bodycombat, Group Kick, Fight Do, Tae Bo, and Turbokick. They are all fun to take and to teach. Isn't the purpose here to enjoy group fitness?

    bwhiskey:

if bc wants more men in class, add  more punches and cooler, boxing type moves rather than standard aerobic moves (eg mai tai), and keep out girly music as well as the cheerleader barbie doll type instructors who normally teach step or other notoriously female aerobic classes. they dont belong in bc. isnt that the point?

There are quite a few men in our BC class......

If the male participants giving their all during class, BC can be very powerful and you look great too. This will inspired the male's non-participant to participate.

The female instructor in my class is very very tough!

    Good answer. Yes

This is a Les Mills forum though so don't be surprised if the answers are a bit biased!! Wink
