Re: anyone walk out of a class??
It's been forever since I've taught Attack, but anytime I had a new person in class I made sure to tell them that Attack is something you build up to, and that the first few times leaving after 20 minutes or so was an option as long as they made sure to stretch. That seemed to work well when people took that option...and came back the next week. Also, as in instructor, being willing to do low impact options WITH them keeps them coming. Your regular Attackers know to go hard and will go there on their own whereas the newbies need your help to feel successful.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
From a participant’s perspective, just because a person leaves a class early doesn’t mean it’s a reflection on your teaching. In my case, I’ll take a Pump class and would like a little cardio afterwards. Maybe I don’t have a whole 2 hours to devote to complete the entire Attack class, but even a little of it is a heck of a lot better than getting on the elliptical!! So maybe I’ll stick it out a few songs…maybe stop at the push ups or running tracks… once in a blue moon I have enough gas in the tank for the whole thing. It doesn’t mean that I am not satisfied with the instructors or that I am out of shape. Then again, I am blessed with absolutely fantastic instructors where I work out…

The only time I have walked out of class is when I broke my ankle in bodystep lol, embarrassing yes, but I am proud to say that was the only time I walked out of a class.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
Oh this happened to me, too! I turned the step sideways to do straddle-downs, then jump up on top...you know the one. I took my step with me to the side of the room (no mirror on the wall) and the I had a long set of choreo facing that wall. I didn't take my risers with me, so when I went to jump up, the step was lower than I expected, so I let go too soon and caught my foot on the edge of the step. I heard it snap, but I had 50 people in class, so I kept going til the end of the class. It was my fibula, right above my lateral malleolus. Good thing my tendons were so strong; it's better to break a bone than mess up a ligament or tendon, I think. So, I was in an aircast for six weeks. If any of you remember Slide classes, I was teaching that with crutches. Pretty funny (and stupid). Sometimes, when we are teaching sick or injured, I wonder what message we are sending our participants. I was a single mother of three with no sick pay. It can be a tough business in that regard.

I was going over the step longways in one of the peak tracks and this was with a long step and my foot caught on the edge of the step I fell down and crack! Needless to say, once I could go back to the gym step was a very scary class.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
I've walked out a class before, sometimes when doing a double class and realising a few tacks in that I didn't have the energy that I expected, another time when I realised that I was late for meeting someone, only once was because I didn't like what the instructor was doing.
If you're an instructor and someone walks out of your class I wouldn't be too upset, there could be any number of reasons why, and not all of them bad :)

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
Funny how people tend to concentrate on the negatives; just think of how many participants haven't walked out of your class I think I saw a record a few weeks ago. A bloke had obviously been dragged into the Balance class by his g/f. Eighteen seconds into the opening track he walked out.
Gym life: participant only. Currently doing Combat, Pump, Attack & Balance. Formerly doing Step & Jam (new gym doesn't carry them).

thefitnessguy:Thank God the doors to our group fitness room are time locked. Once you're in, you're in it until the end. Kind of like getting on a roller coaster. You can try and get off, but it just makes more sense to get comfortable and ride that sucker out
OH MY GOD THAT"S HIDEOUS!! what if people want to leave, or more even, NEED to leave? what if they need to use the bathroom? what if they just simply dont want to be there? and dont even get me started on the safety risks of that policy. that is terrible. what if someone injures themselves really badly and EVERYONE needs out or ambulance needs in?? what if there's a fire and you're time locked in? that's just stupid.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
So far I've never walked out of a class (Pump or Attack) but just last week during Attack something did get into one of my eyes and it started to itch like crazy; it must have looked weird to the Instructor me constantly having a finger in my eye. So, I just went to the Bathroom to clean my eyes and was back in no time...

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
I walked out of my very first RPM class after about 5 minutes. I'll admit I went too hard too quickly. It took me over 6 months to try again, but I'm learning to like it. I have left towards the end of a few Pump & Step classes due to time constraints, but I always stretch once I get home.
I wouldn't leave a class because of an instructor. I'm there for me, not them. Having said that, we have great instructors, so it's not even an issue.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
The last time I walked out of a class was 4 weeks ago. It was a Boot Camp class, as I had a nightmare getting to the gym in time due to traffic so was too late for my usual spin class. It was actually a really good class, but 20mins I just felt awful. Thought I was going to be dizzy or be sick, felt really annoyed with myself, but left. Glad I did because a few days later I found out I was pregnant, and a few of the exercises I probably shouldn't have been doing, certainly not pushing myself as much as I was.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??
I really feel that walking out of a class because someone is "mixing it up too much" is shameful. Even if I didn't like the music, I would try to concentrate on the fact that I hadn't done the tracks before and that might be something good to do. Every instructor is different. That means that a sub is not going to do things exactly the same as the normal instructor. Nor are they going to bring exactly the same sorts of mixes. If you can't hack change then just wear a shirt that says "narrow minded idiot" to class. That way subs can warn you that the class may not be for you.
Yes, if the class is unsafe or a choriographical disaster then it might be acceptable to walk out. It should be a last resort though.

EEK! you poor thing, yeah i know, i KNOW what it's like to fall, ax yourself then be afraid of something... *cough*beam*cough* however i'm like you, i pride myself in saying i've never left a class... except this one time in body balance (i had a dislocated rib in my chest [which i'd told her about]) and the instructor actually said to me, "sweetheart you can leave, you look like you're in a lot of pain... nobody judges you" lol into the mic to the whole class... that was kind of embarassing too :)
