Jus for curiosity, why they shift from legs up to plant your heels 'only' in the 60s?

A notice  of error from their part?

I am not sure of the definite answer to your question, but Glen took over as PD around rel 59 or 60.  That could be the reason for the change.

BTW, how has your back been feeling lately?  Have any of the suggestions helped?

    Jamie

    Hi Jamie,

I'm gonna test some of the suggestions tonight, so I will definetely give you the feedbacks.

     Thanks

By Bryce from Les Mills International.

Don't misrepresent someone else to justify your flawed argument.

I'm sure it's no coincidence that you omitted the following sentence from his piece:

    Bryce Hastings:

The feet should be positioned flat on the floor approximately shoulder width apart.

For everyone's reference, that page can be found here.

There are many options you can use, I will continue with feet off the ground. No one is going to change that.

BTW: You would have not known about the reference if I did not point it out.

Options are cool, and by saying one option fits all is counter-productive to say the least and mis-leading. They can do either of 3 options 1) Feet off the Floor (still acceptable) 2) Feet planted firmly on the ground or 3) Feet placed on the bottom of the bench.

It is not one fit you need to offer options :)

    Cheers!

Regarding comments from certain individuals, RPM instructors have been informed to incorporate current moves into the older tracks.

I would assume that the same would be suggested for Pump instructors.

For sure Robert. There have been several moves in Pump that were previously done that have been contraindicated or modified so it makes sense to put into practise current teachings.

I asked my instructor about this tonight.  He mentioned that rows used to require that the bar be scraped along the legs.  When it changed to the current format his back problems disappeared.  He also believes there is still an option in the manual to allow the legs to be raised during the chest track but that it's more a left over from the bad old days and should only be used in very special cases.  He doesn't mention that option to the class and would require people who use it to drop the amount of weight they use so as to not destabilise themselves during the exercise.

Having had lower back problems for years I found the best solution was lots of work in Pilates and BB/BF which fixed the (ahem) core problem.  This allows me to do exercises in other classes with the correct form based on the latest research.

I don't see where the confusion lies.

We've had a number of currently teaching instructors come on this thread and not only confirm what is correct technique, but also that they only cue that correct technique.

Re: How to avoid back problems during chest tracks?

    Not confusion anymore for me.

Just tested tonight both methods and legs down is far better: stability and my back was not arching.

I made sure that my elbows made 90 degrees for the going down moves and add some plates next to the bench to make sure I'm doing the correct moves.

    Thanks everybody for the tips.

Re: How to avoid back problems during chest tracks?

Your back should be in neutral doing both versions (legs down and legs up) there is no different in the spinal position to the bench.

If you lie on the bench raise your legs as long as you can move your hand under the middle section of the back the spine is in neutral. The same for legs down do the same test and your spine should be in neutral.

    Surely you can see that?

    What more can I say?

Re: How to avoid back problems during chest tracks?

Well, Rod, I felt more comfortable and stable with legs down because I challenged quite a lot tonight with heavy weights. With legs up I was unbalanced...

Now, former BP classes taught with legs up but with Glen, apparently it changed, so I think we should follow his guidelines  because he has a physioterapist team with him.

Re: How to avoid back problems during chest tracks?

Yes, we can see that your back should be in neutral in both cases.

But, it's harder to keep your back in neutral with your legs raised unless you've got a very strong core.  That's great if you have and can do it.  But many participants don't so the current recommendation is to keep feet on the floor.  And, I guess, to stop newbies thinking perhaps I should raise my legs too (perhaps if they can't see the instructor well or if they underestimate their core strength), it's probably best if we all keep the feet down - and load up on the weight if we need more of a challenge.

Please stop saying this. The LM technique is clear-cut and many actually teaching, actually certified instructors have said as much.

As an non-teaching, non-certified non-instructor you should not be trying to undermine them.

No you are not correct, you can do any of the options offered. Simply put they are there for all the releases not for only BP 71 or BP 23 but can be used for all the classes.

It is like the shoulder press, you can use a bar or not, you can use plates if you want to.
It is like the lunge track, bar, no bar, weights each side or hold a single plate in front.

Just because track 3 of BP 71 says feet on the floor it is a overall guide and can be modified for any given situation. If I choose to do the track feet off the ground and someone chooses next to me feet on the bench and the other person the other side does feet planted and the other person next to them does them on the floor.

Surley that is a personal choice?

All are acceptable, the programs offer options for everyone to use and they can be used and should be used.

It is like in BB you can do a low tree pose, or a high tree pose they are options. You can do a bird (one leg or two) or a hindi squat. The chore says Bird Pose however, you know that 1 foot or remaning in hindi squat is acceptable.

    Surley you can see that?

No one size fits all :)
