C'mon guys, there's already a thread about it one or two months ago...

Let's not debate on it again... Wink

    HellRazoR:
I have a list of songs that are offensive or inappropriate that I ensure are not included during the expo's, this is one of those songs due to the lyrics and video.

Some songs like "Call On Me" or most of those Ministry of Sound songs are perfectly fine if you just remove the video (in LM classes there are no music videos so no problem there) but some songs have lyrics that just aren't suited for public display, like this one.

Did it get any radio airplay? Doesn't get much more public than that...

Of course, I'm sure it's corrupting the world into new depths of depravity and only the righteous can see this!

Obviously this song did, but just because it's on the radio or TV doesn't mean it's appropriate.  Some parents only allow their families to listen to christian radio stations, I've even set-up at a church event before, and songs like "I just want to $u@& every girl in the world", yeah that's not going to fly even if it got radio play.

Well, it's fortunate that Les Mills classes aren't church orientated then isn't it?*

Try to justify it however you want, strawman the argument, but your a smart person CK1 and clearly you can understand if something is offensive to the participants it shouldn't be presented to them, think of the YMCA's.

It's like videogames about 14-15 years ago, they used to be considered kid friendly until some companies made games like Doom, graphic depictions of demons, blood, death.  Around this time the gaming industry adopted a rating system to notify the customers of the content (just like the movie industry).  I'm suprised the music industry hasn't caught on (yes saying the n-word over and over earns an Explicit Lyrics warning but nothing to differentiate between sexually explicit material, or drug references, unlike video games and movies).  If this were adopted into the music industry, then the Flo-Rida song would have gotten a PG-13 for sexually explicit lyrics, and the LM BP class should warn it's patrons before they join the class.  Currently there is no such warning and participants expect the music to be non-offensive when they take an aerobics class.

Anyways it seems like this topic is a repeated one, personally music doesn't bother me unless it takes the Lord's name in vain ("This Ain't A Scene, It's A God ___ Arms Race").

    Fortunately, I don't have to - cos I don't teach in any!

Again, my class is filled with adults, as a rule, which kind of precludes the need for me to baby them...

    See earlier point above...

Ultimately, if you're teaching in one of these places then you'll have your own guidelines in place and can choose to replace the song with another to pander to the circumstances... however, in the most part I'd rather not have my (and others) freedom limited any further because of a certain section of the population who seem to think they can dictate morality to the rest of us...

    ck1- vs HellRazoR:

    counter-argument tennis

Accepting a "agree to disagree" compromise would be reasonable here.

For those from different societal and cultural value sets, what offends one may not offend another, and vice versa. Trying to persuade someone to radically alter that value set would be difficult at best and ultimately rather pointless.

The forum member "pipera" is not a Les Mills Instructor, though his posts, signature and profile will claim otherwise.

Since he has been economical with the truth on his profile, read the real facts here.

Careful now, that is a slippery slope.  I bet I could find many songs that you would find offensive, would you want to work out to "Down 4 My N's by Snoop Dogg" or "FURB by Frankee" or "The Whistle Song by DJ Aligator", how about "@ss N' Titties by DJ Assault".  Perhaps you would like to have extremely explicit sexual music complete with moaning and fake orgasms?  There are all types of music and if you honestly thought about it, there's got to be music that offends you as well, then just consider there are others more easily offended, and a good majority of music that is non-offensive (like PG or G rated).  In fact if we had a music rating system, this whole argument could be more easily stated.  Imagine a strip club may play AO (Adult Only) music or below, a dance club may play rated R (17+) and limit access to adults, some gym's may allow PG13, others may only want PG or G.  This would allow LM to inform their audience that they should expect music with strong sexual undertones or drug references if it was PG13 or something like that.

It's not a black and white issue CK1, which is why this topic is a repeating one.  Personally I keep my material PG, there are some cartoon violence in some of the music videos, some obscure drug references, but nothing blatant.  In fact I removed "Numb by Family Force 5" a christian band, because they use the word Jigga which is a racist term, see Jay-Z's song Jigga my N***, Jay-Z coned that word in the first place.  Plus with 5600 songs to choose from and only 150 that have potentially offensive material, well I still have over 5400 songs I can bring that are non-offensive, so there is still plenty of variety and hardly a dent is made.  Same thing with Les Mills, if they stayed away from potentially offensive material, there's still a wealth of songs to choose from.

We have had a few tracks with the 'naughty words' they beeped them out (LMI) they did censor the tracks and take out the 'naughty words'

Dude it is only exercise to music!

Good for you, I grew up with Gangster Rap, but how does that add to the conversation?  Oh I know because you have to input your life story into every topic, you are a magnificent specimen of humanity Rod.  You should do the world a favor and become our King, yes the King of the entire world, and spend all day describing your awesomeness.

Bleeping out words doesn't remove the context of the song, like "The Bad Touch by The Bloodhound Gang" probably no foul words to bleep but with lyrics like these, it's inappropriate for many situations, like a GX class.

Sweat baby sweat baby sex is a Texas drought Me and you do the kind of stuff that only Prince would sing about So put your hands down my pants and I'll bet you'll feel nuts  You and me baby ain't nothin' but mammals So let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel Gettin' horny now

    HellRazoR:

"The Whistle Song by DJ Aligator", .

Already had it in BC16... not the uncut version - the radio friendly one... and there is the essence of it IMO. If it can make it into public play on a major radio station or hit the pop charts, surely it's likely to be suitable in the majority of cases?

Besides, the vast majority of people who've listened to tracks like The Whistle Song and You Spin Me Round probably have no idea what the lyrics are, let alone what they refer to...
