Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
I gave my opinion as to why I think there is a low attendance of males at les mills classes, you disagree, that is fine. Just explain why other gyms don't have this problem of lack of males.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
In my opinion Body balance is done badly as no one comes around to correct technique, this opinion is even shared by some balance participants I have talked to but as they have already done joga they aren't too worried.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
Up here in the North of Scotland there is a distinct lack of males in any classes whatsoever, probably due to the attitude of these males that classes are for girls!
I have managed to get a few guys into attack, balance and pump and they end up loving it and coming back for more and agree that the classes kick way more butt than there regular workouts! Its still not seen as macho enough to a lot of guys in Britain unfortunately! As for jvisch comments - now balance is not done properly...Jeez why bother with Les Mills classes at all if you can find nothing but fault with every single programme you've tried? I dispute that people dont do balance correctly - yes there will be some who either have poor body awareness of not so great technique - but that can happen in ANY workout....Gym, Tennis, Class, Squash, Running! I have watched partipants in our club come on in leaps and bounds with all three programmes we offer (attack, balance and pump) IF they listen to the instructor and follow our guidelines and also we chat with them before or after class if we or they feel that something needs addresssed.

But of course... didn't you realize, this is the Hulk, with extra body "elasticity" (re: BB knots), we're talking to.
:-))))
Oh sorry... just had a killer BA class (I still am just human, so the effects are sweet exhaustion and loaadz of endorphins).
enjoy the workouts!

If you mean using the treadmill, then I would agree.

A guy needs to be able to show off, hard to do in in body attack
millie36:

If it is meant to be a yoga class then yes it ain't done properly, the instructor should physically adjust anyone not doing it correctly, they just stay on the stage.

I hope it is better discussion than the standard response I get here of "can't be using proper technique", as I can guarantee unless you show them then and there how they could improve, they will ignore you and probably never return.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
As I stated all classes HERE have a lack of males! Most males up HERE think classes are for girls! I answered your question in part but this is common in all gyms up HERE not just in LES MILLS classes!!!!
Jvisch their usual workouts could well be the treadmill, but then again it could be cycling, weights, tennis, squash...some guys who have tried pump and attack are road cyclists or triathletes! those guys found it kicked their ass big time!!! One guy who now comes to attack is a Rugby player. In your part of the world you plenty males attending freestyle classes, great for them, but in some countries it just aint considered macho enough to attend - whether it be circuits, spin, attack, pump, whatever. Even hardcore freestyle classes cant attract them. Yes I can predict your answer....that these hardcore classes are not a patch on the super human class you attend oh and ps Balance is NOT intended to be a YOGA class... its a blend of yoga, tai chi and pilates BASED exercises....also its considered not great practice to touch class participants nowadays, in any workout so adjusting is really only in extreme circumstances..we dont want sued for sexual harrassment or injury! some people also DO NOT like others in their personal space. We use gentle encouragement, cueing and visualisation to help them and that is across the board -any class- I am a qualified Pilates instructor who is taking a Yoga foundation course at present

I'm not wanting to be rude, I'm sure no of us are but...dude...you sure have some ego there. Your "simple" question as to why there is low male attendance as nothing to do with BodyAttack, or the name BodyFlow or Les Mills programs for that matter. Have you stopped and think that may be guys don't want to do group fitness (aerobics) classes?!?!?! You know that whole boy/girl thing...guys are tougher than girls blah blah blah. I'm just puzzled as to why you are so fixated in wanting large numbers of males in a class....let them be! Some people like the weights, some like the machines, others like group exercise others like it all. I myself teach Attack and Combat and have male's and females in both...and yes females are the majority. And I can say the same for Pump, Jam, Flow, Vive, Step and RPM or lets just leave out our Les Mills programs here...bottom line and plain truth is majority of males do not like to be in an aerobics room...again back to the boy girl thing ;) So Mr Troll eerrrrmm Mr jvisch...let the boys be boys and if they want to join let them join in, if not...well they are missing out on 8 amazing programs that are designed for men and women alike :]
Hugs~ P/S Oh and don't think I forgot about your high kicks jump up touch the floor in between video ;) Get that baby uploaded to YouTube and share share share!!!

Then the problem is with the way aerobics is promoted there.
millie36:
Jvisch their usual workouts could well be the treadmill, but then again it could be cycling, weights, tennis, squash...some guys who have tried pump and attack are road cyclists or triathletes! those guys found it kicked their ass big time!!!
Did they say why?
millie36:
One guy who now comes to attack is a Rugby player.
So, rugby players are built for bulk not endurance.
millie36:
In your part of the world you plenty males attending freestyle classes, great for them, but in some countries it just aint considered macho enough to attend - whether it be circuits, spin, attack, pump, whatever. Even hardcore freestyle classes cant attract them.
Then the macho classes need to be more visible.
millie36:
Yes I can predict your answer....that these hardcore classes are not a patch on the super human class you attend
How would I know without seeing them?
millie36:
oh and ps Balance is NOT intended to be a YOGA class... its a blend of yoga, tai chi and pilates BASED exercises....also its considered not great practice to touch class participants nowadays, in any workout so adjusting is really only in extreme circumstances..we dont want sued for sexual harrassment or injury! some people also DO NOT like others in their personal space.
That is sad.
millie36:
We use gentle encouragement, cueing and visualisation to help them and that is across the board -any class- I am a qualified Pilates instructor who is taking a Yoga foundation course at present
Not as affective, pilates and yoga should ideally be in a class of no more than 12 participants, but I realise that is unrealistic for the gym environment for lots of gyms.
