    Pregnancy and RPM

    Hi all,

I know this has been discussed in the past, but would like to have some updated info or experiences.

Anyone teaching RPM through pregnancy? I am not right now, but it's in the near future plans and wouldn't like to stop teaching.

    Any experience will be appreciated!

    Re: Pregnancy and RPM

Talk to your doctor-that's a decision you and he/she should make.  I know we had a participant who took indoor cycling until her last month.  She did end up having to back off because she didn't have enough amniotic fluid-not sure if that's a function of dehydration or not. Way back in my day the OB's did not want us to get our HR over 50%MHR.  That would be difficult with teaching but could be done by faking on the bike and using your voice for enthusiasm and motivation.  Also coaching off the bike-I know LM discourages that, but it can be very effective.  I had to give my bike up so that a participant could take class and I had 2 people come up to me after class and tell me it was the  best RPM class they had ever taken-they felt like they received more personal coaching and attention.  It is very challenging to coach off the bike but I believe it can make someone a better instructor-IF they work at it.

Thanks Jpgirl! I will talk to my doctor once that happens. I have two participants, both in their seventh month, they are doing well. I just ask them to watch their HM, fluids and sit under the fan. I am just concern about the intensity, if that will decrease the participation of the riders. I love to add it to the right and show them how hard I am working, they are used to that, so if I go to the other side... not sure if they will enjoy it the same and my self will?

I don't want to stop riding and teaching.

    Definately not.

There can not be any rule here, as each case is individual, who knows how the body will respond - so why take such as risk?

RPM and Spinning are too active for doing it during pregnancy.

    Re: Pregnancy and RPM

    Hey there -

I was a participant in RPM right up until days before my last child was born. Every woman and every pregnancy will certainly be different. It is important to be aware that a healthcare professional is aware of and happy with the continuation of exercise. A healthy woman that has regularly participated in RPM prior to pregancy shouldn't be discouraged from continuing just because she is pregnant. However, intensity should be monitored and adjusted accordingly - allowing enough oxygen to meet the demands of working muscles but not at the expense of a growing baby. Breathless is not something that you should be aiming for when training. This means that you won't be working as hard as normal - but keep in mind that it does become progressively harder to be comfortable and maintain good form and intensity the further into the pregnancy you get. So, when it comes down to you specifically being pregnant you'll probably have to cross the bridge when you get to it and see where your pregnancy takes you.

    Good luck!

    Re: Pregnancy and RPM

My wife and I just had a little girl and she both rode and taught up till her 8th month of pregnancy. Her physician indicated it was totally safe as long as she monitored her heat level and to not take her heart rate to her normal max level. The reason she actually stopped riding in her 8th month was due to the fact that she could not lean over on the bike anymore. As long as a woman is careful and really listens to what her body is saying, there is no reason to stop riding or teaching. My wife was actually a really good example to many of the participants in my class - showing that everyone can do RPM.
