How imperative is it to have cycling shorts for initial training?

I currently teach 2 classes a week and do just fine without having cycling shorts. I've tried getting the gel seat in the past but just didn't like the way it fit. I'm wondering how different everything will feel however during initial training if I'm on the bike for so many more hours. I'm sure some of you didn't have cycling shorts for initial training...do you wish you did?

I managed without them.  Most people would recommend them.  It depends on  you.  Though, it is important to Look like a cycleist.

Since you say I need to look the part, should I buy one of those cyclist shirts then, too? I normally wear the standard workout sleeveless shirts...I especially don't like shirts with sleeves as I am trying to stay cool since I sweat a lot.

I took training 5 or 6 years ago.  We had Body Training Systems as trainers.  We were on the bike for hours at a time, the second day, all day( 10 hours +).   Most people had shorts.  I would invest in some cheap bike shorts from "Performance Bikes".  You can shop online and get a price.  If you see the same item in the store and the online price is less, you can get it for the online price.  I never use to wear the shorts but eventually the rubbing from the seat wore the skin away and it was not very comfortable.   The trainer may ask you to wear a blue shirt on the second day, blue is the color for RPM. It does not have to be a bike jersey but that is up to you.  If you get a blue bike jersey then you will be well prepared for your video!  Oh and of course, if you can afford it, pick up some bike shoes with SPD clips or whatever pedal system your gym uses .  Most use spd.

The shoes I actually do have! They've got the spd clips...thanks for the tips...I did end  up ordering a pair of shorts from nashbar.com for $36 (hope that doesn't seem too expensive, but they were $60 originally...)

Comfort is EVERYTHING during your training! The bikes I trained on were brutal in comparison to the ones at my gym. I didn't want to see another bike for days after my training - needless to say the lady bits cop it when you are on the bike for so long. So definitely take care of "down there"! Good luck and be prepared for your challenge.

Bike shorts ....yes...it is a LONG time to be in the saddle...bike shoes absolutely... maybe even more critical than the shorts...and yes look the part and wear RPM blue...

Once you try cycle shorts, you will never go back, I HATE the way they look on guys but I got over it and tried them.

I do wear gym shorts over them to and from the gym though, up until right before I get on my bike Surprise

Honestly the look (even on women) is what's kept me from getting them. They're just so bulky looking.....ugh....but I did order some along with a jersey (not the kind that have sleeves or zippers, but it hangs lower in the back). I should be able to get 2 practice sessions with them before training....

Thanks for all your help and advice...I'm pretty familiar with 3 tracks so far and hope that helps me with training.
