    Mirror Image-blah

I love the other Les Mills classes!!!  All of my instructors are awesome.  That being said, I just can't get BodyStep.  I have been taking "freestyle" step classes for YEARS with no trouble.  But I have tried Body Step and the mirror image thing is just killing me.  I am always on the wrong foot to the point where I just want to scream so I leave the class.  I am too old to learn new tricks.  Any suggestions?  I hate not having a step class to go to any longer because everything is now Body Step!

    Thanks!  Big Smile

I have never taken a freestyle step class, so I'm not exactly sure what you're used to. But, the first time I took a Combat class, the instructor offered a tip that has worked wonders for me in all formats. This assumes you are in a room with mirrors on the wall behind the instructor. Position yourself so that you can see the instructor's reflection in the mirror, and then watch their reflection. In other words, you're not watching the instructor as s/he is facing you, you're watching the reflection of her/his backside, as if s/he were teaching with her/his back to you.

    Hope this helps!

I had a friend come along to BS to participate in one of my classes. She is left hand dominant, and struggled with the mirror imaging.  Are you left handed by any chance?

Can you go to the middle of the class, behind someone who knows what they are doing, follow the instructor cues but use the person in front of you for visual cues, this should help with the mirror issue.

I like this idea... might work for you until you get the hang of it?

I teach freestyle as well but teach mostly mirror image also (the last thing my class needs first thing on a Sunday morning is to spend an hour staring at my ass!)  However obviously if the class is struggling i will join them on the other side of the step for a couple of reps until they get it, then jump back over to the other side.

    Stick with it! Smile

it is true :) also HEHEHE @ MARION for [the last thing my class needs first thing on a Sunday morning is to spend an hour staring at my ass!]

i used to hate the mirror image thing (if you've done BALANCE RELEASE 46 warm up you'll know why ;) ) but honestly if you just stick with it you wont even notice it after a while!!

    Re: Mirror Image-blah

I agree with all the great suggestions everyone has made! Hopefully once you get the hang of it you may actually start to prefer it because you can really connect with the instructor. I've never taught freestyle, only BS, but I think I would miss out on eye contact, funny faces, etc. if my back was to the class. But like others have mentioned, if I see my class really struggling with a particular move, sometimes I'll flip around and teach with my back to them long enough for them to get the move. Then I flip right back around. Good luck!

    Re: Mirror Image-blah

Stick with it, no dog is too old to learn new tricks.Approach the instructor before the class, and say you're having difficulty with the whole mirror image thing and if they were any good they'd actually provide you (I'm sure you're not the only one) with more verbal cues ("leading with the right" or "step up with the left") and visual cues (raising the left hand and making a chopping action to indicate how it lands on the beat).

And seriously, no one really cares if you're leading with the wrong foot because everyone has been there, just keep watching and you'll pick it up.

I have mild dyslexia so the whole left and right is a mystery to me. It's not the easiest to give a verbal cue, for the class, which is the opposite to what my body is doing (I can't walk and chew gum at the same time but that's a whole other issue).

I struggle but I'm getting better at it and it's becoming easier so there is hope for you.
