    mikesbytes:

Has anyone ever been to a Bodyattack class where there are more males than females?

A long time ago during the summer only me and two other males turned up for BA. There was a rule back then of 5 participants minimum to run the class so we had to persuade our female instructor to give it a go. Stick out tongue

Nowadays I'm the only male among 30-40 ladies...

At our club in central PA all of our classes have a higher F-M ratio.  Doesn't bother me at all.  I am a regular BC attendee and we are just about to launch attack.....I can't wait for the challenge.  That's really what it's all about for me, challenging yourself to get to the next level.  I'll also go to Jam when I can, even though I have no rythym...it's just a fun break.  who cares what you look like.  The end result is worth the work.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I'm not sure that the group exercise argument applies.  I ride with a bicycle racing club and have looked over the membership statistics for NSW, Australia and the membership is 90% male 10% female, which is also what I see on the group rides.  So why do females prefer to to do body attack to road riding?  Is it that body attack is geared to females?

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

usually there is a big misconception (sp?) that group fitness is for girls. Today was an example of how not true this is... I was at the RPM class and there were only 2 female. (one participant and the instructor) then after i was done with the BA class i jumped into the Attack and there were 11 people in the class.. now this time was 4 male 7 female.

I guess guys get scared of what people would think if they see them doing the "aerobic class" (thats how they usually refer to BA)

I just enjoy it and my body loves it every time!

    just my .02 cents

So why were there so few females in RPM?

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

As an instructor I can literally remember every man I've ever had in my Attack classes, because I've had so few come into Attack. I make a joke of it to all the ladies who come saying that the female of the species is more deadly than the male, and thats why we rarely see man in Attack.

I think men dont want to be seen as being sissy or they assume only gay men do Attack. I find that attitude really funny as I get to watch the attack dvd's and the male instructors on that are so not sissy looking and in fact incredibly masculine (and may I say - quite hot!) even when doing heel jacks.

So to all the men out there - get to Attack. Especially to all the single men out there - get to Attack, as there is a whole room of awesome ladies at your gym who you've never met, who will not think that you are gay, or a sissy but in fact think that you are actually well brave for turning up and you may make yourself some good friends-and have a great time to boot.

I know a guy who works out a lot and will NOT step into a group exercise class at all because he says "it looks too awkward and it's just weird" .... I think for them it's all about complex and they can't handle subjecting themselves to something that may make them look like "macho"???

I really have no idea, I think it's kind of silly!!! Buy hey, I'm biased because I love Attack... what can I say! :)

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

    Vive la difference.

There's no short answer here.  Some Australian data which might point the way.  Overall, women participate more than men in exercise, recreation and sport.  For aerobics/fitness activities, the figures are 23% for women and 15% for men.

Constraints to participation:  Whilst things like age, injury, lack of interest are equally reported by men and women; 27% of men cite lack of time due to work and study as the reason (women 17%) and family commitments 5% (women 13%).  So, more men than women are in the workforce, so more constrained to particpate.

Motivators.  Men who participate in sports and physical recreation are motivated by health and fitness (50%) and enjoyment (27%).  Women on the other hand report these at 58% and 16%.

What's the decision making process?  A model (by no means the only one) might be:

    1)  Am I able (a perception of competence); then
    2)  Is it worth it (enjoyment, beliefs, attitudes); then
    3)  Enablers (such as fitness, skills, access, safety, the environment); then
    4)  Re-inforcers (such as role models, encouragement, support).

Since 'enjoyment' is a significant factor for men, there are a lot to "lose" at that second decision-making point (not to mention the first if the exercise involves 'complicated choreography').

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I definately know what everyone is saying, I was one of those guys as an ex-army soldier and personal trainer I told my wife no way am I taking that "chick" class.  This is the primary obstacle to over come, funny thing is now 2 months later I teach Attack 3 to 4 times a week I my gym.  There are two ways we have been successful in getting up 12 men in the classes.

First  as GM of the club I started giving out free drinks and tanning session as prizes to all the launch participants.  Then we revamped our explination to the men.  I say it is like Jane Fonda and an NFL conditioning coach created a insane super athlete called BA and I dare them to take the class and see if they can hang with me.  I strike at the ego.

It also helps if you have strong male instructors the are true to the moves but still a bit aggresive.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

    Gidday mate..

Its pretty common, I've been doing BA for about 12 years and apart from a male instructor that still takes the odd class, Im usually the only guy that does it.

I've also been doing  Pump off and on for a long time as well, and I noticed that initially, again I was the only guy but now days there's a pretty good mixture of males/females... I'd say roughly 20-25% males.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

    Tris:
I am the only man who goes to Body Attack classes at my local gym.

    Is this common ?

We don't have BodyAttack, but we have had a totally brutal 60 minute circuit class for at least five years and everybody knows of the class.

Typical class is about twenty women and maybe five guys with the top five competitors almost always women with the men scattered back from there to last.

Most guys don't come because they are totally intimidated by the intensity.  Of the guys that do try it, some last 10 minutes, some 15 or 20 minutes and never come back. A very few make it all the way through on pure adrenaline and even come back and pace themselves better the next time.

BodyAttack is probably the same way.  Twenty some years ago I nearly died in my first high impact aerobics classes while the gals in the front row were going full bore and joking and laughing at the same time.
