Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
Roxy:
I'm not wanting to be rude, I'm sure no of us are but...dude...you sure have some ego there. Your "simple" question as to why there is low male attendance as nothing to do with BodyAttack, or the name BodyFlow or Les Mills programs for that matter.
How is my question egotistical? In fact I have been thinking the same of yourselves, "I find it hard, hence everyone must"....
Roxy:
Have you stopped and think that may be guys don't want to do group fitness (aerobics) classes?!?!?! You know that whole boy/girl thing...guys are tougher than girls blah blah blah.
Some never will, but those who don't care about macho image, why aren't they?
Roxy:
I'm just puzzled as to why you are so fixated in wanting large numbers of males in a class....let them be! Some people like the weights, some like the machines, others like group exercise others like it all.
Because I want to do aerobics and there is so little available suitable for a guy.
Roxy:
I myself teach Attack and Combat and have male's and females in both...and yes females are the majority. And I can say the same for Pump, Jam, Flow, Vive, Step and RPM or lets just leave out our Les Mills programs here...bottom line and plain truth is majority of males do not like to be in an aerobics room...again back to the boy girl thing ;)
Then it is in an education issue, make your classes more visible, too often they are in a back room
Roxy:
missing out on 8 amazing programs that are designed for men and women alike :]
The focus is the women, not the men.
Hugs~
Roxy:
P/S Oh and don't think I forgot about your high kicks jump up touch the floor in between video ;) Get that baby uploaded to YouTube and share share share!!!
To what point?

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
To what point?
I personally want to see you do these amazing leg kicks and touching the floor moves because I simply DO NOT believe you are capable of doing them properly.
I have had blokes in Attack who say its easy and then when I've seen their technique its awful. Bent legs, crunched over upper body and arms anywhere but where they are meant to be.
I cannot take you seriously, as honestly I think you are b***s******g about your fitness level/perceived fitness level.
If you were to prove that you are capable then I would hold my hat up to you and say "yep he is good, yep he is fit and yep maybe he does have a point" - but untill I see these kicks executed perfectly, my belief will continue to be that actually you are not as good as you think you are.
So if you want to be taken seriously on this forum - prove you are good and then we will all shut up and listen to you.

Firstly the kicking leg should be bent and only straightened at the end of the kick else you risk knee damage.
The back should be straight not leaning back as I see at les mills.
Arms, should be in guard position

Performing such kicks you really are risking knee damage! The kicking leg must be straightened from the beginning... Arms in guard position? How's that? Enlighten us.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
For the first time on this forum you are correct. It is my problem, and let me explain to you why: I love BodyAttack -
I love teaching it.
I love taking part in it.
I love the buzz it gives me when I see smileing faces in my class of people who ARE choosing to challenge themselves and attempting to be the best that they can be - whichever option they take. And I love the smileing faces of those who understand that exercise can also be about fun, enjoyment and a sense of community, as that is just as benifical to your life as hardcore CV.
I love getting my new release music/dvd/choreography, as it inspires me to inspire others.
I love being part of the Les Mills family - and you can scoff all you like, take the piss out of me or call me a sad cow - but I wouldnt be teaching or taking part in something I didnt believe in. And I believe in the ethics and the high standard of teaching that Les Mills stands for. And by slagging off my programme and its participants you are insulting me and my belief system.
I may not be as fit as you - as Attack knackers me out and I am beat by trk 10, and I may not have as much fitness knowledge as you - as I have chosen to stick with the Les Mills way of teaching moves to my class. But I'm not chicken - I've sent my video in, and its been assessed, and I've been certfied qualified to teach Attack - that is something you have not done. So please either stop slagging us off or post your high kicks on you tube.

I am pleased that your classes are as you describe, sadly they aren't that way here. Do you do the track where they run around in a circle? here they jog slowly, there are a few exceptions but in general the participants aren't pushing themselves at all, as most look as fresh at the end as when they started. The instructors need to get in there and run with them and push the pace, watching from the center does nothing to inspire.

I just feel they could do better, isn't that what we should all want, for things to get even better? minxymia:

I just object to the false egos the instructors are supposed to put out and the pressure the instructors have to be a certain body shape. minxymia:And I believe in the ethics and the high standard of teaching that Les Mills stands for. Can't comment as I don't know what you are taught but from an outside perspective they miss out a lot such as creating choreography, how to adjust a routine to match the levels of ability in each class you teach rather than just a generic class as then you will only get generic participants and others like myself are left out. minxymia:

And you have posted this in a public forum where I can see it? The reality is that the move I described is so trivial that anyone should be able to do it. In the body attack track I was thinking of we did an up kick then 2 low skips backwards, then repeat. One can easily touch the ground during the 2 low skips. Why should I record on video such a trivial move?

Knees only bend one way, you kick straight legged the foot has momentum causing a strain on ones knee, especially if you kick at speed.

I'm curious, how do you handle it when a class participant comments that they found the class too easy, or do you discourage comments, or would you rather not know? I have nothing but admiration for instructors, as I know I could never inspire people like they do but even the best I do give feed back as otherwise they can never improve. One either stagnates or grows and learns. The best instructors never stop learning and practically beg for feedback. Even les mills I believe wants to know how they can attract even more people....

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
Hello, I just joined and wanted to comment on this thread.
I am a 31 year old man and I have been doing body combat, jam and attack for a couple of months.
My wife tried getting me into it for a few weeks but I was not interested. I simply thought that these classes would be designed for unhealthy middle aged women who got out of breath walking up stairs ... until I tried it.
I came along, mainly, to shut my wife up :-)
I have been hooked ever since - I think that these classes are fantastic. I am normally the only guy in Attack, there are 3 of us in Combat and I am the only guy who comes to Jam.
Most guys that I have talked to simply do not believe that these classes will be challenging or are concerned over their perceived lack of co-ordination leading to injury or embarrassment.
I remember when I used to be really into nostalgia

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants
Comments are one thing, feed back, always a welcome...but in looking at your other forum post...all you do is bash and complaint about our programs. And in truth, I don't know why you feel the way you do. I'm thinking a bad GGX experience, may be? But I do tell you, if you were to ever participate in my Attack class...I will challenge you and you will feel challenged...that my dear is a promise :]

Roxy:Comments are one thing, feed back, always a welcome...but in looking at your other forum post...all you do is bash and complaint about our programs.
Fair comment although I did compliment one body jam class I went to as that one I did find enjoyable.
Roxy:And in truth, I don't know why you feel the way you do. I'm thinking a bad GGX experience, may be? Lots of people here feel the same way about les mills as me, I think it stems from their arogance that they are better than all other gyms which just annoys too many people including their own members. Roxy:But I do tell you, if you were to ever participate in my Attack class...I will challenge you and you will feel challenged...that my dear is a promise :]
I rarely expect to be challenged, I just ask to feel something by the end. I once did a kick fit style class and the speed was 1/3 that of body combat, I found the class pathetic, I got a better work out going to the gym than doing the class. I refuse to go to class of that low a level. Body Attack and Body Combat are of an ok level I just want more than that as one can only for so long go to 12 classes a week before one starts thinking I can't spend my whole life at the gym. I want a class where people groan, where people leave early because they are tired, where they rest during the class as their endurance can't take it any more, where instructors cry out "oooh yeah...feel the burn!!". Now that is pushing people.
