Hello!

 

I have taped my class three times now and the audio of me talking is so hard to understand. Our Group Fitness room is all hard surfaces so all the sound from the music and the mic echo and bounce all over.

  The music is good, but I can't even understand myself watching back the video.  

 Any thoughts or suggestions would be great, I just filed to get an extension on my video.

What I'd be concerned about after hearing that on my video is "Can my class understand me?"

 

Maybe there needs to be some changes with the settings on the stereo? 

It is usually suggested that you wear an external mike one specifically for your video camera (this is different to the mike you use through your sound system).  Otherwise have you tried setting up your camera away from the speakers and closer to you? If you are not sure ring your Les Mills certification manager in Australia they are in head office in Canberra.

Perhaps lowering the sound as a whole will help - try reducing the music volume a bit and keep your voice louder. Why not do a sound check before the class - get someone else to wear the mic and speak while you stand in the middle of the room and adjust music/mic volume to a suitable level.

This might also tackle eskwan's very valid point of 'can the participants hear?'

Yes, the class can hear me, I always ask them and check that before we start as well as during the class.

But for some reason on the replay of the tape it is not good.  ( Live is always better, right?!) 

 I would do a test run, but there is always a class prior to when I teach and one immediately following so it is making it hard to get the 5 min of pre and post class interaction.

  I am going to try two different cameras today and see if that helps.  I got out my really, really, really dinousaur old Sony Camcorder, and it has a foam thing on the mic, so maybe that will help filter out some of the extra noise.  I think I will also try without the class mic and see if my sound is more clear.

When I filmed my Combat video, I had to keep the volume way lower than I like normally, so that I was audible over it. You might want to try that.

Most Group X rooms have hard surfaces (e.g. all walls and hard wood floors, in ours) so your situation isn't too unique. You'll just have to play around with it.

Just a thought you dont put ur cam close to the stereo do you ?? that could cause it ..

 

if ya dont then maybe just for the video put ur mic volume just slightly higher than ur music :)

And good luck on this one..my batteries ran out on my combat video and i still sent it ya couldnt hear a word :0 so i had to resubmit..:( past next time though :) same thing happened in pump but i went out to get batteries while the tape was still running got collared by a girl telling me she was pregnant after doing half my class :0 so was gone 5.06 mins so didnt send that :)..

The More You Sweat In Practice The Less You Bleed In Battle..

Well, I taped this past Wed night, I used a different camera, no mic, and lower music and I got my keeper!!  I mailed it yesterday.  I was very happy with it  and the sound was good.  After each track stretch, I would face the camera and speak and then start changing weights and arranging my bench.  I told my class that I would be speaking forward most of the class, but not to worry, my eyes will be roaming the room watching each and every one!    We had some good energy and most of all I felt relaxed with the camera there this time.  It just took a little getting used to.  

Thanks for all the input and suggestions.  I will let you know when I get the results!

Sounds like you need something soft in the room...like a sound baffle?

Is that a word or did I just make it up? You know what Im talking about?

They absorb the sound so it doesnt bounce all over the place.

I had a similar problem on my Attack video and I ended up having to resubmit 3 tracks so my coaching could be heard

On the resubmission, I had to turn the music really low, which didn't do much to psych the class, but my coaching was heard and they passed me

And I checked with the class - they could hear me during the class, but the video didn't pick it up

I know exactly what you are talking about, anything soft to put up on the walls so the sound stays there.  I wish I could have put up something, I even thought of putting a piece of foam over the mic on the camera to "filter" out the extra noise.

I am so glad I can move on now from that  release!!  Yee haw!
