I feel like such a dork!

So I've done BA a couple of times and I feel like such a dork! The steps are all over the place and I feel so lost. Can someone tell me any tips to make it easier or when I'll actually start catching on? How often should I go to get the hang of it? I'm in pretty good shape...run 20 miles a week and bike close to 40..and have incorporated lifting too. What am I doing wrong or is it just a matter of time?

It just takes time to get used to everything in the class. Maybe try to get all of the low-impact options down first then move up to catching on to the high-impact options. How many classes have you taken? By the looks of it you will problay have not much of a problem keeping up in the class when you get all the moves down. lol. I have always herd to take attack 2-3 times a week for best results.

Hmmm...I STILL feel like a dork sometimes during BA, and I've gone through the training! ;)

My other suggestion to you would be to just focus on your lower body at first. Trying to get your legs and your arms correct at the same time can be overwhelming. Once you feel comfortable with what your legs are doing, then try to add in the arms.

Don't worry, if you stick with it, you won't always feel like a dork! The first time I took Attack I stepped on my friend!

    Hey Megan!

You sound like you're going through what I went through. As runners/cyclists, everything we do is in a single plane. We move our arms/legs to propel ourselves forward in a straight line. It's a no brainer. BodyAttack adds the lateral running and independent arm/leg movements that we are not use to. I certified back in Nov and I am just starting to feel comfortable with the movements. Take the advice of the other posters and be patient. With consistency, things will start to click. The moves will become second nature and your workouts will get better and a lot more fun! Good luck!!!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

Hang in there!!!  Most of my new members feel exactly like you do...we've all been there(instructors included) all below are giving the best advice(do legs first, start w/ low impact first) all will work-if there is a specific move you are having trouble with, ask your instructor, I've come in a little early(15 min) or so and have worked w/members w/ specific issues-once you start feeling comfortable, it will get easier, you will be able to do higher options(if you want) and then you will see the results!!!  I tell most people if they take it once a week, give it a month...so hang in there, it is obvious your cardio is where it needs to be, the moves will come-no one has been born knowing these things.  Good luck and Best Wishes!!!
Always look towards your goals but don't forget to take time and enjoy the journey. Never give up!

Give yourself some time. :) It will come. Even though you know you can work harder and your fitness level is great, take some of the more diffacult move's easy (low option) until you get it. Remember we all started somewhere and saying what the......:)  Hang in there.

hmm yes Meg I HEAR YOU!!! Alas people are right, i hated attack and was a moody cow in the beginning because when everybody went left i went right etc lol. yes persistance and doing the class a few times a week, the moves do get easier. then of course there is a new release that comes along and lots of the seasoned attackers are back at square one too (Hooray). Some advice i got tonght was dont think about the moves, start small and if in doubt just run in the same direction as the class. good luck and keep soldiering on

Re: I feel like such a dork!

Other than just keeping at it, Meg, I'd also recommend trying to really focus on hitting the first few weeks of a new release.  Part of the challenge in getting the moves right is also knowing what's coming next.  If you're never sure of the music and the next steps, you're trying to both work on your current move and listen for the next.

When they're in a 4 week launch of a new release, things are steady on the sequence front, so it makes it easier to learn the actual steps.  After getting one release down, it becomes a lot easier to keep up (or so I found :))

    Good luck!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

I know how you feel...... when I Did body Combat for the first time, I felt so silly.... i was all over the place and had no idea what I was doing.

I was very embarrassed and stayed at the back of the class hoping not to be noticed - Now 2 years later I am at the front of the class yelling and giving it my all!!

Like others have said it does get easier, and if you continue to stick with it and persevere, you will find it will get easier and you'll get the hang of all the moves.

     Keep it up!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

All I can say is JUST forget what others might think you are the one that matters, if you get your heart rate up in a safe way then who cares what you look like just enjoy the music and the moves will come

STOP thinking too just do and not try. Sub concious or routines where u do not think use quicker neuropathways hence you respond on time, takes longer to think about a move let it become habbit.

Try a differnt instructor maybe the one you use does not que effectivly for you and another instructor may que differently. Just a thought

Ps i teach loads of aerobics and still go wrong lol hence i am human and people like that, BTS trains people not roberts yeah i feel silly but hey laughing is great for the abs

Re: I feel like such a dork!

Yeah, I still remember my first ever attack class and cringe! I hate to think how bad I was but there was another guy in there who was just as bad so at least we could laugh at ourselves.

I think I've almost got the hang of it at last.......you wouldn't believe how long it took me to be able to get the right arm on things like scissors and lunges though.

I've got someone daring me to try Jam at the quarterlies - I think I'd better be prepared to look uncoordinated again!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

Try taking out some of the arm lines until your feet learn the foot moves, sometimes that helps me!  61 has some pretty hoppy-skippy-jumpy choreo in it that befuddles me even now!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

    Ahh don't worry about it!

You get used to the choreography after a few classes...

unless they bring a new BA out in between your first class and your second.

thats what happened to me, so i certainly felt a bit silly for a while but the key is not to worry about other people, just focus on what you're doing and you'll be fine.

if you make a mistake, it's best to smile and laugh it off, rather than act all embarrassed.

hang in there! it gets so much better!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

    Hang in there!

Have you told the instructor that you are new? I find if they recognise a new person in the class then they spend a lot more time talking through the moves between tracks, and spend the first round of the routine talking through it.

Other than that, make sure you get a good vantage point to follow the instructor, so you can keep an eye on him during the whole class. I remember one class I went to I made the mistake of staying in left hand corner of the room, so everytime we turned left I lost sight of the instructor.....Big Smile

Also don't think about what you're doing too much, just copy what you see (this sounds crazy, but I find it helps me get to grips with a new routine). Don't worry if you feel a bit out of step, nobody will care anyway, they'll all be too focussed on the music :-) Hang in there, it gets easier the more often you do it. Try and get down to class 2-3 times a week so you start to memorise the routine.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Re: I feel like such a dork!

there's nothing wrong with feeling like a dork! just keep going, if you keep working at it you'll get better. not to mention the progress your body makes when you introduce new things, it helps you grow and change into a better and more rounded you! eventually the dorkiness and awkwardness will go away. So as far as im concerned just enjoy yourself and don't worry about the moves as much as you having a good time. the moves will com in time.
