    Bad eating habits...

    Hey ya'll,

I'm a new body pump instructor, and I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!

Just from the short time I've taught/taken Pump, I can see muscles shaping up and toning really nicely all over my body, and I can feel strength and power like I never have before... However, I have had a long history with eating problems...

Lately, from stress, I've been eating my worst yet, and recently gained a few more pounds (and I can TELL these aren't the good pounds we gain when we put on muscle!).  Obviously bad eating habits aren't going to change overnight, and I'm talking with people locally to get help, but this is sooooo hard for me, and I know, for many gym members!

Any little mantras, small thoughts that can be inspiring, any personal suggestions of how to make this huge healthy lifestyle change, permantently?   I have become a perfect example of how someone can work out like crazy (I teach a ton of cardio, as well) and still be "over-weight"...

    Thanks for support!  :)

When your nutrition back slides a little it is often a mental thing. Try keying in weight loss affirmations on youtube.     You will come up with a number of a guided affirmations which are useful in getting your nutrition right.      Another very interesting thing to have a look at which covers this topic and many others is Tapping. Just key in Tapping on google. It is based on Chinese medicine, it is very simple to use all you do is tap key accupuncture points to release trapped energy.  Checkout some of the videos on it on youtube. This is phenominal.

It is a lifestyle change and does take time.

What i notice, is that when I don't eat properly I feel it the next day.  I just feel low in energy and if i'm teaching then i notice it hard to lift my normal weights in BP, or make it through a whole class on BC without extra rests.

Most of my dinners are usually stir fry meals.  I notice that it's a way to increase the vegetable content of a meal and also reduce the amount of meat.  One 250g piece of meat which would usually be one piece of steak in a meal can be spread over 2 people in a stir fry.  Also these meals are quick to prepare which is great if you're getting home late from the gym or not in the mood for cooking.

If you live with someone that's also watching their diet it can be very helpful to support each other and keep the other on track and not giving into temptations.

Why would you want to eat less meat? Protein = good :o)

    Re: Bad eating habits...

I often binge and usually try to stick to this thought,

"am I so hungry I could eat an apple?" I don't ever crave them but eat them if I am hungry.  It often does the trick.

If I need something sweet I have a milky coffee with sugar which takes away the craving and temporarily fills me up.

     Good luck!

    Re: Bad eating habits...

You are probably not eating to support your new intense exercise.  Re-evaluate your intake.  Are you taking in too much sugar and not enough protein??  I had to add in protein...I was so depleted that I grabbed at anything.

I also recently have gotten off of sugar...I'm sure I get some from fruit and food but I don't eat sweets or desserts.  Unbelievable how much better I feel!  The energy from the protein, fruit, vegges is great.  I try to get as many complex carbs as my calorie limit will allow, too.    I've lost almost 10 pounds since Easter and I feel stronger than ever.

I'm with you on the protein.  There were days when I'd be sitting at my desk at work shaking and crying and having insane cravings for chicken.  Then I realised that those were the days after I'd got home from the gym late and only eaten noodles or something for dinner.  I've upped my protein a fair bit lately and am feeling pretty good for it.  Now I've just got to pack in the chocolate...

    Not tired are you???

I'm not denying that, but meat also has fat.  So more meat is more fat as well.

    Re: Bad eating habits...

Thanks! I like the apple idea, honestly, a few times I have sat down and peeled and orange, it has really helped - it's nice and juicy, and many times we crave sweets it's because we're thirsty, so that's always helped.  Not to mentioned they are sweet and delicious!

Thanks for reminding me even in a hurry, I can grab an apple!

Thank you SOOOOO much for telling me about Tapping!  I looked it up and learned a little about it, and EFT, both of which I had never heard of!  It really responates so strongly with me, and I think it can be very helpful to people who are eating poorly not because of lack of knowledge on how to properly eat (balanced diets, good nutrition, etc.) but for people like myself, that may simply be struggling with something like binging, due to emotional problems from stress/life!

I am really going to stick with it and give it a try.  Thank you ever so much!

    Kindly, Kate

    Re: Bad eating habits...

    Hi Kate,

I can't give you much good advice as I'm in a similar position and struggling too. I know how to and have lost weight, but when I do I am usually really hungry and with the amount of classes I'm teaching at the moment I can't go too low on the food.

However, a few things that do help me:

    1. Don't obsess about it too much, if I'm thinking about food, I'm more likely to overload.

    2. Plan a little better, have nutritious snacks in your cupboards/fridge that you can grab, e.g. dried fruit, fresh fruit, oatcakes, nuts (though again have to restrict as high calories) etc.

    3. Keep busy, personally I eat alot more if I'm a bit bored, example when watching too much TV etc. Luckily I'm quite busy at the moment, but there are things too divert the munchies, give yourself a manicure, hot long baths with candles, go for a leisurely walk etc.

Good luck. Hopefully I can get back on track too, I'm very frustrated as I've stayed the same weight for several weeks now and really need to start seeing the weight decrease as I've got a wedding dress to fit into! I thought my extra cardio classes that I've taken would help, but although my butt is getting smaller, the pounds haven't stopped dropping off yet.

     Nicky.

    Re: Bad eating habits...

I agree with the protein posts.  That is what I struggle with the most with all the activity I've been doing.  When you don't eat enough to fuel the body, then you can get into trouble.  I was told I needed to eat around 20 grams of protein with each meal (5 small meals a day), which can be tough.  There are a lot of protein bars and protein shots that have the protein you need with lower carbs.  Very important to read labels and make sure you aren't getting the carbs and sugar instead.

    Re: Bad eating habits...

I'm also finding it very difficult to lose weight (or fat) and i know it's definately down to my diet.  Luckily i love fruit so i usually have more than my 5-a-day of that, however i hardly have any veg.  I also struggle with getting my protein.  I did make a huge effort a couple of weeks ago to make sure i got more protein, but thats kind of gone to pot now.  I find I just don't have enough time to prepare anything healthy, inbetween going to school, the gym, revising/exams, and working at the weekend.  Also, becasue I work at a chinese restaurant 2 or 3 nights a week, it means i bring dinner home, and its usually the yummiest, fattiest, greasiest.deep fried-iest option on the menu! but i just can't resist cos it tastes so good mmmm.  I've also got a huge sweet tooth and love all things nice like cake, choc and biccies......theres too many temptations in my house!!!
