    mikesbytes:
Has anyone ever been to a Bodyattack class where there are more males than females?

Many moons ago I had a temporary membership at the Merritt Athletic Club (Towson) near Baltimore, Md and they had an advanced aerobics class called FOR MEN ONLY (Women welcome). It was a tough small group of maybe eight peeps held on a handball court.  I remember it was a really noisy class with everyone chatting it up.

Oh yeah, it was usually about six gals and couple guys, maybe three guys with me, and the rotating instructors were all gals.  hehe  They also had several aerobics classes for women in a much larger room with maybe sixty to eighty women and me.  They looked at me like I was an alien from Mars and the routines very much reminded me of cheerleaders with pom-poms at a highschool football game.

That club still exists and is now almost all LMI programs - I just checked their webpage.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

Not in Auckland....3 weeks ago our instructor (Lisa) counted the guy/gal ratio and guys came out top at 19 v 17. Id say on average BA classes in AKL are at least 25% male. Not sure why the big difference in AKL compared to all the other comments about the lack of males in BA...maybe the good instructors we have down here? maybe being the home of GF there is a different perception about the "man-ly-ness" of classes.

For me BA is the best cardio .....cant beat the experience!!!!

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

As a fella i love body attack it is strong powerful and demanding, but does take a couple of attempts to get to grips with lol.

Problem we have in the UK is that men see group fitness as a ladies thing and weights as a man thing. If a fella does go to a class then people tend to assume that he is a bit efeminate or weak. personally i would say to them try it then call it just for girls or weak.

These class's do take time to get right and several attempts and unfortunatly when it comes to men this is a no no espcially in front of women. Men want to look the best and show off and hate looking silly and we are very concious of this. All i can say is that the NZ boys must be really confident and gender boundries have blurred further than in the uk.

the boundries are breaking but males in a attack class are still one or two with 25 - 30 females. I think this is down to the gender of the instructor too, there are not enough male instructors of these programs on the circuit. i get more men in my classes then other instructors just becuase i am a fella as they fell less intemidated.

this will always be a battle and i hope when i get to do the attack training i will encourage more men to attend the class and relise the great work out you get.

any other thoughts? these are just my theories

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I think men get scared off by moves like superman and ice skater which they think is more girly. It really is a pity, its such a challenging workout, more men should get involved. I think some guys that don't go to classes probably think its easy... which ofcourse it really isn't. It always helps when its a male instructor, they can show them that it isn't a feminine thing.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

The funny thing is that our gym, guys are more willing to take Attack that Combat.  I think that its because guys know that they wont have to look manly doing Attack, so if they dont look tough, then 'no worries'.  But in combat you have to look manly, and if they dont look put together while a bunch of women are able to..... then they will be embarresed.

you know, for how incredibly though we all are, guys are incredibly insecure.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I agree with the above posts, if the guys would just get over their inflated egos and just try it, more than once, then they would be hooked. I have talked to a few of the heavy lifters in my gym and try to talk them into rotating an Attack, Pump or Combat into their workout a few times a month. I thnk they would see great results in tone and definition to compliment the size they are putting on in the free weight area. But, they never show up because it is just an aerobics class and they think it is just for girls.

I see them looking into the room while class is happening, I thnk they want to come in but are afraid of what their friends might think if they participated in an "aerobics class".

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I dont even think that its the fact that they think that its just a girl class, its the fact that they wont be able to come in and be awsome at it right away.  Guys do not want to look awkward or out of place.....ever.  it goes against man law!

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

In my gym there is as general only <3 in fitness-classes. Only except is Body Pump. But there is they only for the restitution. Last week, there wos 5 men in a BodyCombat class at same time! That wos a reccord. In the gym there is many who is training Karate, but few of them are willing to training BodyCombat! I speak with one of them. He say that the BodyCombat-class almost killed him the time he traied itHmm. The thing who is very commen is that peaple who training matrial-arts like Karate, are pawer-full and explosiv at the upper body. But slow in the lower. So when it is going throw the boxing-part, they are to slow to ceap the combo, and the kicks, they can do it, if it go slower... They only can ceap it up in BodyPump who is familier to them. I think the reason for men not com in to BodyAttack is the speed, and moves that not are familier to them. That is the first part. The seccond. They have to admit they get beaten by ladys in this arena, and know this before they go in there, therfor they put the finger down and not even are willing to try.

at fitness first clubs in the philippines, several occassions, yes indeed.

to date, it's considered to be the most challenging les mills program by those who have tried the rest of the programs, myself included.

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

well heres the thing....I thought Attack was a bit feminine before 53. 53 got me hooked cus of the more motivating music. I then became a trainer and was really enjoying attack until 58. The music choice just didnt do it for me or other male participants,i lost the male participants and then finally gave my classes to a woman and focused on combat : )
    happy:)

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

I guess to each thier own huh?  I have to say that I think that the music as of late has been incredible and I would also like to think that im as manly as any guy teaching group fitness.  Funny thing for me is that I didnt like 53.  its a shame to let a couple of releases sour your mood.  but i do understand that the music is key

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

Hi we have the same situation (Central Scotland), with just over 60 participants in a class, only 3 are male.  We have huge banners and posters in the gym where the guys can see them, and they pass by the studio to the changing rooms, but I think you are all right with these thoughts. And its possible that they consider the studio itself, to be a 'girly' place.

I also teach indoor cycling, which can be very mixed, but normally a 50/50 split. And I try my best to encourage people along to my Attack class.

Maybe an idea could be to do an 'all male' promotional class, to let them try it without the girls, that way they wouldnt feel 'out of place and awkward'?

Re: Body Attack & Male Participants

You know another thing that I think hinders our gym is the lack of support from even the male members in management at the gym let alone just any guy that works there period.  they WILL  not come, even the owner.

I trained for combat at a gym, with a guy that was completly new to group fitness.  he was getting trained because the gym he wanted to personal train at was making him gain a reputation by teaching classes before he could train.  i was thinking how awsome!
