    Re: WOW! BODYSTEP 71!!!

the only bad thing about 71 that I hear from members is the switching of moves its too frequent....it is really hard to say get a cardio "peak" in track 10 because the moves are constantly switching instead of focusing on intensity in a consistent movement.Members have a hard time following because once they get into a move the move then changes too quickly after you have set it up so therefore cardio intensity goes down because the members are focusing on "ok what do I do next" instead of really driving the move with speed and bigger range of motion. That being said the music in 71 is great...albeit...there needs to be a more gender neutral approach to the music and moves as is being discussed on another thread about bodystep for men....yet overall it is a winner for sure.

    Re: WOW! BODYSTEP 71!!!

As a participant, all I can say about this release is thank heavens our gym is starting to mix in old tracks.  The music in 71 must be the worst yet, and the running woman and Thriller moves are ridiculous.  The instructors in my gym have been bombarded with requests since the release party to deep-six the running woman track first.  The most often heard comment about that one around the gym has been "It makes the Fergilicious track palatable."  Since that is one of the most reviled tracks in our gym, that comment says a lot about the running woman track.

I understand wanting the program developers wanting to do something different--it must be difficult to create something new as often as Les Mills puts out new releases.  But please, please, PLEASE--no more interminal looped music tracks with repetitive phrases!!!  There are plenty of musical arrangements with reasonable licensing fees that have real lyrics, and true verses and choruses.  Also, the influx of absurd hand and dance movements (and I took dancing for years, so I know the difference between good and bad) has to stop.  Case in point--the Naomi Campbell move.  An added bonus to better music would be less boring choreography, and less reliance the contrived hand movements and steps.

The average Body Stepper is not the hard-core, must-exercise-at-all-costs athlete.  We are people with busy lives who try to shoe-horn a few worthwhile, healthy hours for ourselves into our weeks.  We're looking for something that exercises body AND mind.  I come out of that class dripping with sweat and having had a fantastic physical workout.  However, what once left me with a buoyant mood and feeling mentally cleansed as I left the gym now leaves me disgruntled, and dreading a return the next day for Body Pump (because the music there has gone downhill as well).  I used to look forward to going to Body Step when we had  a new release, because once I learned it I had a few weeks to exercise on autopilot before I had to start recalling old steps.  Now I pray for the day the instructors are allowed to mix in old releases and get rid of the new material, because the moves have become increasingly contrived and the music is simply noise to be endured (often at high volume--which does NOT improve it).  We've lost a significant number of Body Step time slots in our gym over the past year and a half because we don't have the numbers to support them, despite the fact that our instructors are a fantastic group of people.  Our numbers are dropping because participants are increasingly turned off by the music and choreography.

Please don't tell me to switch to a gym with a different program.  There's a lot more to choosing a gym than simply liking a particular brand of group fitness program.  The gym is, at heart, a family, and we have wonderful people and the best facilities in the city.  I'm not willing to give that up strictly because I'm tired of the recent spate of releases. I am eternally optimistic that "this too shall pass" and we'll get back to the releases that make me try to justify taking classes more often rather than making me force myself to go to the gym.

SOOOOOOO WELL SAID LISA! I hear your frustration. I too as an instructor feel that some of the cutesy moves may sit well with the program powers that be but I do hear alot of frustration with the ordinary members wanting a tough sweat dripping athletic workout and NOT some dancy contrived themes going on. After launch at our club we are usually bound to teach the new release for about three weeks....then our GFM sends out an email saying we can mix back releases...and man...you can tell that the new release drops right off the charts very quickly.  I taught the last two releases the obligatory minimum only.  We need athletic gender neutral power based workouts in Step that will appeal to the ordinary general fitness population!

    Re: WOW! BODYSTEP 71!!!

It seems obvious to me that every person isn't always going to like every song in a BodyStep release.  But just because you don't like a certain song, doesn't mean that everyone hates it! Les Mills does an excellent job of appealing to a diverse crowd, with both songs and choreography.  Both the Fergalicious and the "running woman" (BS71 - track 5) tracks are fabulously intense leg tracks (assuming you are executing them correctly). And I have received fantastic feedback on these tracks from participants relating to both the songs and to the chorography. It is the job of a good instructor to keep their class focused on the work at hand and to keep it fresh and interesting everytime - even if you have taught the same release 20 times!  SouthernBelle0927 - If you don't like the extra hand movements (Naomi Campbell move), no one is requiring you to do them! (There is nothing frilly or absurd about a basic step with running arms.) I think it is fun to add some extras to the work out to take my mind off of the work for a few moments! I love strong athletic moves - they are the reason I fell in love with BodyStep - but I also don't want to do propulsive knees for an hour straight either.  If we only had strong, power moves for an entire BodyStep class, it would be easier to lose focus and form - but when we change the focus from strong, power moves to fun, lower intensity moves we create a challenging interval workout.  I am able to give the power peaks all I have because they don't last forever!

I really hate the Thriller in this one as well as track number 5. But the rest, I think it's awesome. I personally love Love is the Music, it is my favourite track ever!

    Re: WOW! BODYSTEP 71!!!

As someone has already stated, not everyone is going to love the music and moves in every release.  If you hate a song or move or armline, deal with it, get over the fact that you don't like it remember it's all in our delivery of the class that counts, not where you love or hate a song, move or armline.  I'm not fond of  Thriller but I play on the freaky side of the song and get through the track that way and must say the participant enjoy it and we all have a good laugh at the same time.

I find if I don't like a track I have to work harder to deliver it well and make extra efforts to do so and don't constantly remind my class how horrible it is, because if you show you hate it the class probably will too.  That's not the true essence of Body Step is it? We deliver the best class with enthusiasm, strength and enjoyment every class everytime.

    Happy Stepping!
