A nasty experience in Body Balance-can anyone certified explain it?

    Hi

heres a question for all you lovely balance instructors.

im not a trained balance instructor but a participant, have sneaked into balance quaterlies before, and lately started to take balance classes after body pump classes.back to back sessions.

so about a month in to doing balance regularly, yesterday was the day the instructor launched the new release.

first three tracks went fine, midway through the fourth track(after the track with the sun salutations/dog/crocodile sequence, you know the one!)started to feel light headed.thought not a problem, will continue as i know how awful it can feel as an instructor if someone leaves your class.feeling went away for about one track, then on the last standing track where we had to turn to face a different direction-the instructor turned aswell and taught from a different side of the room-so we werent facing the front, but the side of the room-and then changed to face the other side-thought i was going to throw up and nearly ran for the door. Didnt - for the reason stated above-and stuck out the class, but felt dizzy and lightheaded on the 2 abs tracks.

can anyone explain what this might be down to,or had anyone say they feel dizzy in balance before?

    thanks for any replies

The tracks you mention contain inversions. If you have Epilepsy the doing inversions are a big problem if you are a epileptic. There is also some research that during the menstrual cycle doing inversions is a major issue. There is also a related condition "heart issues and blood preasure issues" that could come into the picture.

Have a Dr also check you out as well and always seek medical advice when you have illness or any other medical condition always.

Please stop the class and seek medical advice always.

It would be a good thing to go check in with your doctor. Most importantly, if you feel uncomfortable or dizzy you need to look after yourself in class and not worry about 'hurting the teachers feelings', stop what you are doing and check yourself... ie put yourself in a comfortable position and breathe regularly, your teacher is also there to assist you, if you are in trouble let them know!

If you are experiencing postural hypertension, it is a common condition and its important to understand what is going on with your body while exercising. If this is the case you should get a clearance from your doctor. If this was an isolated case and you have not experienced it again it could have been an episode induced from stress, hormonal or other blood pressure/blood sugar issues. If you are taking BodyBalance after BodyPump you need to understand that is a long periods of exercise and your blood sugar levels and levels of fatigue are stressed. BodyBalance is an engaging, strengthening and intense class and yes, while also relaxing and meditative it is not by any means 'easy'.

It is super important that you breathe rythmically and evenly while you exercise, never 'hold your breath'. This is something that is particularly important in a yoga based program. There is synchronization of your breath and the movements in BodyBalance....( a vinyasa is the foundation of the sun salutation). The movements are linked to connect the poses and the cues your teacher should give you for the steps to take to get in and out of the poses. Your movements should coincide with either an inhalation or exhalation. The speed of the movements also means that our breath moves faster.  Many beginner participants may gasp or hold breath or breathe too rapidly which can cause dizziness. Its all about muscular and respiratory capacity.

Please take care of yourself, while I personally teach BodyBalance directly after teaching BodyPump or BodyCombat regularly... I need to ensure that I am well hydrated and energized  to teach to my full potential. There are some great glucose gels or light energy bars you can nibble in between class to help you through the two hours. What you are experiencing could be fatigue from the back to back.  There is good info on this website about exercise and nutrition.. Check out the 'healthy lifestyles' section.

    Cheers.

ok your symptoms are a classic of hypotension( in normal speak - low blood pressure). the dizziness, light headed can be from standing up too quick. also sounds like dehydration starting to kick in after prolonged exercise. had you eaten before the class/es, also how was you fluid intake before and during the class/es. the quickest way to relieve the symptoms is to drink water (couple of hundred mls) as this will increase your blood circulating volume and therefore increase you blood pressure back to normal. otherwise lay on your side in recovery position( on side) or even better but a little obvious is laying with you legs/feet elevated above you heart level (maximses blood flow back to the central cavity. ok better take nurses cap off now.

    thanks for your replies

it definately isnt connected to epilepsy

the hypotension comments are possible but i did have my blood pressure taken 2 weeks ago on a Ptrainer course and it came up as well within normal.had had a normal breakfast in the morning.,drank before the first Pump class and in between tracks in Pump (and btw was completely fine in Pump,no dizziness at all)but did not drink before the start of balance (back to back classes).

Well, from the doctor's perspective, I think you may be suffered from TIA- transient ischemic attack.   Some recent  reseaches indicated that "safe and appropriate" training may actually build up your endurance and muscle flexibility.  But, only medically or physiologically- aware persons should do that.  I am not sure are you a trained instructor (Anatomy or Physiology pershaps?), but if you are not sure, try the safe way.  Drop down to child pose and rest in long breathings.

And, Balance right after pump is an advanced challenge.  You'll really need lots of sugar and energy to do so.  May be you should slow down and try to catch some rest in between first.

    best regard,
