I am by no means saying u have to be Gene Kelly to do BodyStep well. Im saying theres a way to remain masculine and do the moves in question. For anyone.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

My wife has been prepping for a BS72 release next week so I have been subjected to the moves and music and I have to agree that this release is horrible IMO.

Normally I go to her BS classes but I will absolutely sit out BS72 whenever she's teaching it, the song choices are absurd, and I believe that one person was able to choose most of the songs in the release?  How about allow me to choose half of the songs for BS73, it would be a much better class musically at least.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

As a Balance/Flow instructor I had my first taste of Step last week, and even though I enjoyed it, yes I did feel too girly from some of the moves.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

i am fine with the music for the new release.  some i like , some not so much, but none do i just are horrible.  my only concern is the difficulty  or the 'burn'.  it does not seem as hard as past releases.  like hot in here.  thats a good un.  i like the tracks that you walk away from with your legs burning and gasping for air.  I can get that in the new release but i have to work harder for it.  really exploding into EVERY movement.

but thats just me.  by the way combaters.... if you do step, you WILL be able to do higher esk's.   promise.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

My husband agrees with you totally. He wants to boycot coming to my class until I am no longer teaching BS 72 because it is completely about women and for women.

So, He is coming to the release because  Iam wearing something cute to it but if it were not for the outfit he would sit this one out and BS has been his favorite class do to the fast music and routines.

Keep shaking your thang for us Tim!!!  Which BS did we just launch?  It didn't seem super girlie to me.  I hear what folks are saying, but I think the males at our gym do a good job of making it work for guys and gals.  The girls too, but since my 2 fave BodyStep instructors are both male, I usually only do their classes.  Hmm... that might start a whole new thread...

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

36yr old male and I have liberally been to BS for about a year and a half. BS71 was awful, I took the "release" class and never went back until I knew it was gone.  As many posters, way too femine moves for this guy.  BS72 is a lot better, but has 2 brutal areas as well, but 2 is better than the whole class.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

For the Vogue arm move....I say to picture kung fu....push your hand so far away...push the bad guy away from you just....big key...push it strong from your head the whole way out to fully extended.  Then, if you add a grunt, it seem a lot more manly. lol  (Plus, truth be told, I got the move down when I thought of that for myself.  Easier image for my body to understand and do.)

In track 8, with the addition of the explosive hands on the third stomp, I tell them to go for the block (volleyball).

Haven't come up with a good aggressive, sports image for track 7, with the arms on the v-step.  But I'm working on it.

Can't do much about lyrics, if that's what's turning some guys off.  Fortunately for me, I tune out the lyrics a lot when listening to music.  Which is helpful, since often the actual lyrics can leave much to be desired.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

I feel that the last several releases of BS have gone more to an athletic based workout. That being said this constant chosing of music that calls out "ladies..ladies...."   or "oh mama oh mama....."  "if ya pretty make some noise..."  or in others words make constant female references is really puzzling.   I am a male step instructor and while again I have loved the last few releases turn towards more athletic moves, sometimes I feel very embarrassed for the few male participants in the class when such music calls out to them constantly "ladies ladies..." etc.More gender neutral music should definitely be utilized.  It is already hard to appeal to males to come to group fitness but we certainly dont need anymore help driving them away.

    Re: BODYSTEP for men

Dude, you fully need to get a life! From my experience of listening to thousands of songs every quarter, this is the way most songs go. If it's a guy singing, he's usually singing about a woman. If it's a woman singing, she's usually singing about a guy.  I doubt that a song celebrating a woman would turn a guy off working out, unless he really hated women.... or the instructor constantly made references to empowering women.

Women rock, and i'm only to happy to (and will continue to) include songs that celebrate and empower them.

How about giving me a list of 'gender neutral' songs that made people smile, feel good, and motivated them to move.

Bodystep is a mix of athleticism and fun. The ratio we aim for is 70% athletic and 30% flavor/fun.

Each Les Mills program has it's own essence. This is the Bodystep essence. 'Liberated and Alive'. So you're not going to hear hard aggressive type songs in Bodystep.

There no songs about hate, racism, and nasty things in life. What's the problem??

    FYI

I Got It  From My Mama / Dude singing about hot chick

Mama / Chick singing about her mother

Lets Dance / Dude wanting to dance with a chick

Crash / Chick wanting to crash a party with a guy she likes

Vogue / Ladies with an attitude, fellas that are in the mood

Shut Up & Drive / Chick wants to drive her car with her guy

Like This Like That / Chick wants everyone to dance and shake what their mama gave them

Footwurkin' / Chick wants some flash footwork moves

Footloose / Dude wants the right to express himself in dance

Flirt / Chick wants to go to out dressed as she wants and have fun and not be hit on by sleazy guys

Let Me Think About It / Not sure... let me think about it...

Release / Dude wants to release coz he's outta control

Bubbly /  This girls in love.

Come on.... go enjoy the sunshine!

    Great point MOPS!

"How about giving me a list of 'gender neutral' songs that made people smile, feel good, and motivated them to move."

If were not part of the solution, were part of the problem. We need to start sending in those song requests!
