    Self Defence true stories...

Hey there guys - just had an idea for a thread about any true stories where you had to defend yourself (and whether your combat training played a role?). I do alot of boxing and wieghts training outside of my combat classes and was walking around at the train station the other night (doing a bit of a peacock strut cos my muscles felt soo big, haha). It was late and there was a group of 'tough' looking guys on the platform and no other people. Although i was safe in the end, I thought "I wonder if i ever had to defend myself in a confrontation - would i start doing bodycombat punching and kicking combos?" I imgained the look of suprise on my assailants face as i unleashed the claw move with the zombie track in the background...!!! Hey i could probably scare them away with my james bond hand-finger gun?

As long as the right track is playing at the time Smile

Imagine getting in a fight and, for example, I'mma Shine came on the radio. You'd have to drop and do tricep blasters! Wink

What about wraps! We'd have to say 'Hang on a minute' wrap hands and then fight. Lol

Or you want to side kick them but they are in front of you - and the corry won't let you do side kicks to the front so you have to ask them to move first.......

Thats why you should have the meanest badass tracks on your ipod, mp3,mobile phone or whatever..

All you have to do then is ask them gently before they mug you if you can just listen to this song the for the last time before they take it away...and if their cooperative you can even ask them to place themselves to fit the moves in the chorey .."do you mind standing right there..yeah a little bit more to the left...thank you"...LIGHTS OUT Big Smile

Not that I wish I would ever be in that sort of situation, but I think if need be those moves would come to me pretty naturally and quickly by now without thinking.  I would be worried more about bruised and skinned knuckles, it must hurt if you actually punch real hard.Stick out tongue

    Re: Self Defence true stories...

I'm not convinced Combat would really prepare me that much for serious self defence, but it sure has instilled some good instincts as far as reacting with a back kick when someone creeps up behind me ... as my husband discovered! Stick out tongue  Only he was more like this: Crying
Free the body. The mind will follow.

And you have to pre-cue and pre-view where you can, always demonstrating low options...

Ha! Funny!! You would be surprised how you would NOT do anything you do in Combat if you were attacked! I have been doing martial arts for 23 years and taught it for 11 and believe me, if that is what you think, you will get hurt! Wink

Actually, old Rocky Stallone says it all in BC36 floor work. "It's not how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can take it!" In Body Combat you are not used to being hit so the first punch you get will stop you! Wink

    Re: Self Defence true stories...

Which is probably why, on my module I, Matt advised us to go do some external martial arts training (didn't matter which discipline) so we could learn to feel what it is like to hit and be hit.

    Re: Self Defence true stories...

Not an actual self defence story but....

I went on a FAST defence course - hightly recommended, check out the videos on the website for an idea of the fights: dubdubdub dot fastdefence dot com click on downloads at the bottom.

Anyway they taught us to use palm strikes and knees and I got several compliments on how good my knees were, especially that I also used my hands to pull the attacker onto the knee.  I have never done any Muay Thai training so attribute this all to combat technique!!

    Re: Self Defence true stories...

Yes, the technique training can be good in Combat, but it just doesn't teach you how to use it.

I always used to teach hitting anywhere on the head with palm strikes, knife hand strikes and elbows, not punches. Anyone who has ever connected with a human jaw with their bare fists/knuckles will tell you why!! Ouch!

True..that is why I think the best thing combat can provide you with is fitness so you can RUN !!!
