    Re: Combat Training

If you haven't taught before I'd watch this week at your gym to see how your instructor does their cues. You want to make sure cues are strong.

I go in a month to take my training and I've never taught before so I am trying to learn how to cue like a madman. Less about the workout for me right now, more about breathing and learning to talk while working out to give proper cues.

As always make sure you spend a little time in the mirror checking your various kicks...are you leaning forward on back kicks...leaning back on front kicks and knees..is your toe down on side kicks...toe pointed on round house kicks?

From what I've read, take a lot of small things to eat with you so you can refuel yourself when you get the chance.  Lot's of energy to be expended at class so must make sure you don't pass out!

    Re: Combat Training

Don't stress about learning to cue like a madman.....no-one's expecting you to be an expert straight away! Just listen to your instructor and how they cue things (couple of beats in advance), the type of words they use and how they vary the level/tone of their voice.

Also, listen to the music and try to get a feel for how the moves change with the music and how moves layer on one another.

Try to get to as many classes as you can before your training (without going overboard though - you don't want to be exhausted for the training!). Maybe ask your instructor to keep an eye on your technique to see if there's anything you can tidy up quickly - but don't stress, your trainer will really work on any problems.

Then there's the usual - take plenty of snacks and drinks as you don't get all that many breaks to eat so make the most of them! Also, take a few changes of clothes as it's not nice sitting in cold, sweaty gym gear while you're doing theory sessions......

Finally, enjoy it ok - it's be one of the best experiences of your life.

    Re: Combat Training

    Thanks Rob...

I did over do it a little a couple of weeks ago and got BAD shin spints... so I have been taking it easy. I am going at a time where the new release (41) is just coming out... so I am assuming that is the track I will be learning. I wish I could have practiced on that release but thats ok since I am sooo excited about 41!

I plan on bringing snacks, 3 pairs of clothes each day to change into, something warm to wear during our down time, and ipod...

I hope this does it since I fly in 3 days!!

Great advice, Erin, especially about the clothes and food.  The gym I trained at was freezing, so after we sweat for a few hours, it was really chilly when cooling down.  My sweatshirt was a godsend.

Ben Feliciano was my trainer and he really wanted us to focus on the technique, and not so much the cueing the first day.  Just make sure your cardio is up high.  It's a long and exhausting three days, but exhilarating and amazing as well.  I took a few days off from Combat before training and I was glad I did.  9 hour days are tough and you don't want to go into training tired.

Good luck!  You will love it!

    Re: Combat Training

I know it makes sense that you would be training on 41, however when my crew trained last winter, they had us on 33 since that's what they had enough kits for!  Crazy huh?

    Re: Combat Training

OMG!!! That is CRAZY!!! I will be so disapointed if it isnt 41 that we train on... It sounds like a good one!

I guess I will find out in 3 days!

    Re: Combat Training

Erin, I'm sure it will be 41.  I received my in the mail a few days ago and it looks like a great one to train on.  Nothing totally crazy or wild, and the set up moves in some of the tracks are great for training purposes.

Good luck, and try to have some fun tomorrow.  By the end of the day Sunday, your adrenaline with be pumping hard and you will be glad you did it!  Let us all know how it goes.

    Re: Combat Training

    Hi!

I'm in the same boat- our Initial Training comes up in 2 weeks and looking around for advice (footwear, training-for-training, etc).  I trained for BodyFlow about a year ago, so I feel a little more comfortable this time, but our club does not have Combat yet and I know it will be a bit more intense! (Still, I'm a little nervous, but very excited, though!)

This all looks like great advice- good luck to you!! I'm sure it will be an amazing experience. :)
