How much RPM is too much?

I know too much BP is not the way to go (I went for 3 weeks taking 5 pump classes each week, just to prove a point), but since it is mainly a cardio workout, can too many RPM classes become harmful in any way?

I teach or team RPM seven times a week, sometimes more when I sub or launch, and I have heard some say that is way too many. I try to fit in BP at least twice a week, and I am limited to only these 2 programs due to physical problems (BA, BS, BC are out for me).

Does anyone else teach RPM that often? I'd love to hear what the experts think.

I'm sure that variety is important, but that being said I teach on average 5-7 RPM classes a week.  Some weeks I do more (release week) and all of my classes are 60 mins except for one which is 75mins.  I find stretching is very important and I find that it helps to do extra weighted hamstring exercises to help keep balance (so I'm not stronger in my quads)

I'm curious to hear what everyone has to say about their own experience.

Re: How much RPM is too much?

i'd second the post above me in terms of variety. An instructor at my gym teaches both cycle and RPM (she teaches a lot) and unfortunately, the effect has gotten to her knees (she says it burns when she teaches pump as well).

Im an RPM participant and when i first started out i just did RPM / Cycle (4-5 times) and NOW i limit to 2-3 times a week for RPM and the rest of my weekly workout is floor based classes like BA (2 times), BS (Once atm, but thinking of adding another class), BP (2 times a week) and BB whenever i can. Its also very important to stretch (hence the BB/yoga/pilates suggestion). Now, my muscles aint tight anymore compared to a year ago.

Since BA, BC, BS are out for you, i wander if your gym offers BV (Bodyvive?)..this is another great alternative for an overall body workout. Low impact as well....

    I hope this helps...

RPM + Attack + Pump + Balance...I breathe on les mills baby!!!!!

Its easy to say no more than 3 classes per week to a participant - very different story when you teach, isn't it? Definitely look at trying to incorporate some extended stretches or bodybalance (or something along the lines of this class) if you are going to teach that many RPM classes as you are starting to overtrain those muscles. I had this conversation with my GFM last week and she swears that Balance is the reason why she doesn't get injured (She teaches RPM,BP, Attack, Step & Balance). I currently teach RPM and Pump and have just looked into doing the Balance training as finding the time for "personal exercise" outside teaching is getting a little hard.

    Hi,

I also teach 5-7 RPM classes, moe if I sub etc.  I have not found any problems except for sheer leg fatigue!  I have been teaching for almost 2 years and have logged a lot of bike time!  I always ask my classes to listen to their body and someimes I really have to do the same!  I love RPM so much and I give 120% every classt I lose myself in it and I am at the point where I want more!  I challenge myself EVERY class with that little red dial!  Main thought, listen to your body, it will let you know what it does and doesnt need!  Keep loving every class!

    Lydia,

Thanks for the input. Just to let you know, I already suffer from knee/joint problems (I've already had a patella replaced but that was before RPM). I've found that waking up with any joint pain or stiffness almost always disappears after doing an RPM class.

    Sweenster,

You sound a lot like me, I love teaching RPM. I do listen to my body, and I take a break once in a while. Nice to hear someone else thinking like I do, just wanting to make sure no one has developed any long term worries. I've heard of problems from overdoing BP (which I have done on occassion Embarrassed), but not much regarding RPM, as long as it's done correctly.
