How do you work in free weight workouts with BodyPump?

How do you work in free weight workouts with BodyPump?  I'm thinking about going to BP for 2 times early in the week and lifting freeweights 2 to 3 times a week.  I would be splitting up the body parts in the free weight workouts.

holy jesus titty fukking crap shack... you're gonna doing weights like 5 times a week?? are you gonna protein load and become a body builder too?? i'm thinking (depending on your goals) that's a little excessive, especially since pump is "all over" and completely smashes your nervous system! i think you'd only need to do weights one or maybe two times a week if you're doing pump too... but that's just my opinion and given i have no idea what your goals are... unless... you're going to do body weight stuff the other 3 days... (pushups, pull ups, dips, leg lifts, abs etc) i think you might get burned out...

As long as you are including enough time for recovery incorporating free weights shouldn't be an issue. Everything kind of depends on what you were hoping to achieve with your free weights? A little more info here might get you some better answers. Are you incorporating any cardio into your program?

Probably the best way to incorporate BP with free weights is to do a full body session as opposed to splitting up your bodyparts.     It depends on your goals hypertrophy wise you would have to increase your calories and concentrate on compound movements in the gym. BP is a great overall conditioner, I do 3 classes per week and find my bodyweight is very consistant, should I train in the gym, I do full body workouts low volume and reps and go fairly heavy.  I also add in sprinting for cardio.   It does give the nervous system a hammering, that is why I never do more the 3 classes a week.

Huh?  When I want to "hypertrophy", I do isolation moves for a particular muscle group THEN compound moves for that same group straight after, lifting almost 95% of my 1RM for very few reps.

Low volume, low reps and heavy weights in the gym combine well. I really think Body Pump  gives you all the muscle you really need.

TRUE THAT!!! ^^^ unless you're looking to build "show pony" muscles, i think all the "functional muscle" you're gonna need will be built in pump...

Sure would be nice if you had the slightest bit more info in your profile so we could have an inkling of from whence you're asking this question.

Most peeps simply don't need the strength derived from doing heavy weights.

Having said that, let me continue by saying I have several friends with physically hard jobs as hotel housekeeping maids (I'm their English tutor), and they do the equivalent of a BP class a day six days a week.

I think a heavy weight workout once a week (LOL! on their day off!) will give them like a passing gear is to an economy car => some extra power when they need it in short bursts.

The vast majority of peeps will get everything they NEED from BP alone at least once a week and not more than 3x/wk.

If you want or need to add heavy weights/low reps for power, think Mon and Wed BP and go heavy on Fri when you'll have an extra day of recovery before Mon.

Now, how about some more detail in your profile?

True, I also combine BP (3 times) with weight workouts between with recovery days,   but the best thing is you explain what you want to do and your goal with your fitness instructor so he can schedule you a specific program.

    Hey Bexi,

Whilst I'm no prude and have been known to drop profanities..perhaps a LM online forum isn't the place for it?

Perhaps we can just stick with more "useful" language in the future?

    Just a suggestion

    Rex,

Thanks for the feedback and I will try to update my profile on here sometime soon.  Earlier this year, I added a nice layer of muscle mass to my body.  I wanted to get a little bit bigger, but not be body builder big.  I am now trying to get a more ripped/slimmer look and BP does a good job at helping with that.  I was afraid that I might lose some muscle mass if i did BP.  That's why I wanted to do a combination of both.

Well, as soon as you cut back on the heavy weight/low rep routines you're going to lose some muscle mass.  Only to the degree that you can build bulk with BP can you maintain it. I hope that's clear.

For the vast majority of peeps, BP is sufficient.  If you want more muscle mass, add heavy weight/low rep sets.

But most peeps outside of the weight room don't know how INTENSE those sets are.

Subject for a different thread = I'm not sure how useful doing "AS INTENSE AS POSSIBLE" BP tracks are except to be able to increase weights up to some limit in future BP classes, and of course the satisfied feeling of leaving class exhausted.

BP is a very useful class, and will help in other LMI classes up to some point, in my opinion.  But does one derive even more benefits in those classes by going to one's physical limits in BP 3x/wk?

Stated another way, past a certain intensity in LMI classes, is the reward mainly personal satisfaction?

For me, not the main reason. Also for being fit and enjoy workout in music that motivates me more than weight lifting..
