collfoster:My trainer for Combat never went over this particular situation....but I have members that take class that can just barely march and love Combat for the upper body use. Tell your client to absolutely go and try a class and when he/she is not doing the lower body moves to keep her/his arms moving overhead to keep the heartrate up a little. Everything is possible if the person is willing. I would love that in my class as it is a true inspiration for me to see someone never giving up due to circumstances!! Your client is a FIGHTER!!!!
Arms moving overhead serves to elevate the heart rate without the cardio benefits, and is generally not advisable for a generally healthy population. Do combat instructors feel qualified to teach handicapped individuals? I am not trained in Combat, but I am in Pump and Flow. My opinion is that we are trained to teach apparently healthy populations, not special populations, such as wheelchair bound. I would personally be afraid of liability.
