    Rip it up in Combat

    Hi all. Hope you've got a minute to read on.. I tend to go on a bit!

    Firstly, I've been teaching BC for a while and wanted to up my game in respect of technique, fitness and knowledge. Although (i've been told) Combat is my strong point... I know i'm not where I want to be, I see other wonderful instructors with the martial arts background and know I need to get into something else to help me achieve the standard I'm looking for. I was going to attend a boxercise class (for upper body) but i'm yet to find an instructor that has the faintest idea on what boxing is (with all due respect) These people are great at what they do but not what i'm looking for. There is a shortage of great 'Dan and Rach' style martial arts classes in my area but i'm still looking. The problem is, I would like to do all, boxing, Muat Thai, Karate and so on but simply do not have the time. One class a week I could fit around teaching but what one??!! Any thoughts? 

    Also, as teaching full time my body is under serious strain. (I've had to stop runing and cut back on some classes) I am having lots of chiropractic treatment which is helping but my body feels like its at stand still. I want to train for myself but cant seem to find energy after all the classes. Does ayone else have this problem? I want to do more but the body wont let me! To give you an idea here is my weekly routine...

     Mon - Pump, Spin, Aerobics, Step, Jam / Tuesday - Aerobics, 5k run (not the past 4 wks) Spin, Condition, 2x Combat, Pump / Wed - Pump, Combat, 2x Spin, Jam / Thursday - Step, Jam, Combat, Boxercise, 5k Run / Fri - Combat, x2 Spin, Balance, Swim / Sat  Combat, Pump / Sun - SLEEP. I think i've got all that in !!

    If I have time I also like to attend other insructors classes through the week. Does this look like your week? I'm intrested to know what other instructors rota looks like.

    That is one hellva schedule you got there, one question though, when do you actually rest?   Your body needs to rest to give you energy and strength and to let it recuperate too.    No wonder our body seems as if its at a stand still

    It does feel hard to find a rest day, just wanted other instructors thoughts as i didn't know if i was just being a whimp!!

    I don't see it as being a wimp, more as the reason you are at a standstill!

    REST YOUR BODY!  You are overtraining and obviously your body is telling you so by having injuries. 

    Please do yourself a favor and slow down, crosstrain and keep at least two days of complete rest in there!

    It sounds like your body is asking for a much needed break.  I use to have a really crazy schedule until I got burnt out and my body broke down and I got injured and I was forced to take a break until I healed.  Take it from me, better to back off now then get injured.  I think every body is different.  Some people can handle more load and strain than others.  When I read the post about Dan and Rach's training schedule, I could have died.  But for me, personally, when you start feeling like you can't move and you are hurting, then it is time to rest. I think you really need to reevaluate your schedule and back off for a little.  It is painful to let things go sometimes, but worth it in the end of you can continue working out.  Good luck!

    I kmow what you mean my schedule looks like this:

    Mon - 4x Combat + Chest and Triceps

    Tues - 1x circuits, 1x 45min combat + Shoulders and Biceps

    Wed - 1xRPM, 1x Combat and core work

    Thurs - No classes (YET!!) Leg and kick conditioning

    Fri - 2x Combat and back

    Sat - 1xRPM

    Sun - 1xComabat

    occasionly i get sleep but not if i can help it!!!!

    You can't keep tearing down your body and not taking time for recovery, my friend!  That schedule is brutal.  Even the fittest among us - even Olympic athletes! - require rest and recovery.  The over-training is probably keeping you from taking your fitness and technique to the next level.

    Drop some classes or line up tons of subs.  Take a self-imposed break and learn to DO NOTHING.  It'll re-charge your batteries and make you a better, stronger instructor and athlete.

    CookiePie - I think Rach's post about their insane training regimen was a joke:)  Unless there was a later post where she posted their ACTUAL training schedule and I just missed that.  I thought her post was hilarious - but no human being could keep up with that!  Not even Dan & Rach!

    Hey, because teaching is my only job now (i've recently given up studio co) i'm finding it hard to not teach! The dvd's/cd's/Qw and everything else life throws at you... what do you do when you only teach?! Must say to you guys who replied.. the treatment i'm having is working... I can walk again in the morning Big Smile

    That's alot.  You're schedule is full-on, i think you should look after your body because your body is all that you've got in this life. Once it damage, you're life will never be the same again.

     I'm scare of overtrain, I want to be able to walk when i'm getting older. Running or high impact exercise is not good to do everyday 'cause it could damage your knee joints..... I always alternate between high & low impact exercises...

    May be you could give up a few classes :)... don't other instructors need job too ? LOL hehe joking.

    EDIT: Oh, i'm not an instructor by the way :)

    what everyone else has said so far is right your body needs a complete day or so to recover and rest. I know what it is like to miss a class and force urself to stay and rest whilst your body at this stage is able to move, but in perspective the way you should think about it is Would you rather have one or two days off a week or be at the stage where you are away 6 weeks plus, not able to exercise or take classes till your body is healed....

    2days...... 6 weeks, that for me is what kinda helps me rest a day.

    Hate to say this but I'd hate to be the one looking after you when you are riddled with arthritis.  That's way over training.   The most classes I have ever taught in one week is 16 and even that was too much.  You must have a recovery day.  Plus if you are continually exhausted it is so hard to give your all to your participants.  As Scooter says, "Take a break..."  Look after yourself Wink

    Yeah, your schedule is crazy - it made my knees hurt just looking at it! *grin*

    I see what you are saying with regards to it being your full-time job, and you need to teach in order to make ends meet... So if that's the case, I don't think it would be wise to try to factor in any more training right now - it will only become detrimental, I think. Maybe someday you can find another side job and take a few days off from teaching. Then you can use your spare time (and well-rested body) to attend a few martial arts classes... not to mention some yoga and massage for your poor aching muscles and joints!

    I had a similar debate as you once - which martial art to focus on in order to evolve as a BodyCombat instructor. I have a boxing background and find that because boxing is kind of like the "broth" in the BodyCombat "soup" - that is, it is the main focus to which all of the other martial arts "ingredients" are added - it's a good one to focus on. There are so many punches in each BC class, that having a firm grip on your punches and stances will automatically make your Combat class look and feel more authentic.

    From there, figure out what specific part of your class needs work. I felt that my kicks needed work; I decided to take Tae Kwon Do. Even though they teach the kicks slightly differently, it still was good education.

    I guess i just dont see how the last few class of the day can get the same energy and excitement your first class get. 

     and whats more if you are doing so many class i dont see how you can just keep the excitement up period.  I love these classes as much as anyone but because we are limited in musck and chorey, it would be like listening to the same album every day.  it would get old.  quick.  i know there are more than one release you can pull from, but still, the same argument stands.

    I have some days where i teach back to back. pump and attack.  I give 100 % in both, and if i am not rested, (I cannot free lift legs the day before) and I am not hydrated and nourished, my legs will cramp and sieze in Attack at the end.      So if you ARE able to keep the energy and not short change your classes, then i would say eat more and drink more.    other than that rest as much as possible. 

    i know the only way I could get through 5 hours of classes everyday would be to lower my intensity and that is something I cannot do.
