How many calories do you burn?

This is my 2nd week of body attack and it's awesome. it's a great cardio workout. Does anyone know roughly how many calories you burn doing the class? I have done combat, pump and jog so i know those totals. Just curious.

I wear a heart rate monitor and i usually burn around 580-650 calories during the class. I think i have heard other instructors say that its between 500 - 700 depending on intesity, weight and other things. Also remember you continue to burn extra calories long after the class is finished!

Re: How many calories do you burn?

It's different from person to person - also depends on how hard you work and it can variate from time to time but it is correct that aprox between 5-700 calories. One of my classmembers always wears a pulse/cardio watch and she is on a medium level and she burns about 600 calories each time. The watch is set after her height, weight, age and so on - You should try getting one of these watches, they are a great training buddy :)

As a BodyATTACK instructor you burn even more calories than your participants, because you use much more energi in teaching, coaching and using your voice, and you can't just stop up and get your breath if you get tirred, like they can, so... It is in fact the hardest and most calorie burning Les Mills programme of them all!

Best Regards Tine Tonino Olsgaard, BodyATTACK instructor in Denmark.

Tine has it correct. I was amazed that I burn more calories on stage even when I also show the low options and couching at the same time than when I'm on a class as a participant and doing everything on my highest levels and basically pushing my limits!

How many do you approx burn in Combat and Pump? I might have to get myself a monitor quite interested in stuff like this!

    here're my approx. figures:

Pump ~400-450 kcal, Combat ~500-550 kcal and Attack ~550 kcal.

The RPM people might disagree with you on that one. I believe RPM would burn more calories per hour however a RPM class is typically only 45 minutes.

Re: How many calories do you burn?

Consensus from instructor manuals, my own HRM readings and other sources:

    Attack 700 - 750

    RPM 600 - 650 – note 45 minute class

    Step 550 – 600

    Combat 450 – 500

Pump 400-450 (includes post activity burn)

If you wear a HRM, don't be concerned if you see values of 100 lower than those above - we are all different.

Also note, instructors tend to work more anerobically than participants and calorie burn will be different.

I do disagree! I have done all the LM classes and I teach Combat and was a participant in Attack for over 2 years and think RPM is the toughest of them out there, depending on your resistance levels of course!!

But then again we are all different. Not a vast amount between the LM cardio classes to be honest. I think Attack and RPM are the easiest to burn calories in. Combat can be so dependant on your technique as to the workout done.

The last RPM I taught was Sunday and I burnt 580 in a 45 min (50 min if you count the cooldowns) class. That was teaching and I had to keep a bit of breath left to coach the mountain track!! I can actually burn more in RPM when I am participating than when I teach as you don't care about being able to talk!! ;-)

Re: How many calories do you burn?

    Hi,

I 'm just starting to teach ATTACK and the HRM shows 1040 kcal for a class.

STEP burns some 700-800 kcal for a class..

So , attack is a real burner...

Re: How many calories do you burn?

I was just cruising by (I'm a BC and BJ instructor) and this thread caught my eye. I actually burn more calories in a BC class (900+) then in a BA class (around 750). But that is influenced by a lot of factors like just participating in BA instead of teaching (teaching I burn more), and the fact that I have a martial arts background (making me punch and kick a little harder then the average instructor). I can get to 900+ in BJ as well... BP is 500 calories max for me.

Re: How many calories do you burn?

There are ballpark numbers, but who knows if they are comparable (taken by the same person using the same meter).

It's difficult to be working in two weeks as hard as you will be after a couple more months in BA.  A lot has to do with the extension you get in each move, and as you get used to it and relax more you'll get more oxygen at the same pulse rate.

HRMs make no claims to calories burned whatsoever.  You can get any number you want by fiddling with the settings.  And what's the difference?  Go hard, have fun.

Check out my facebook page. I'm always looking for a few good friends. Oh, Excuse me... May I motivate you?

Re: How many calories do you burn?

I tend to agree with Rex - just enjoy the workout and dont put too much emphasis on calorie burn - I wear a Polar quite often and I teach Attack ( as well as loads of other classes)  I only burn 300 calories ( according to my polar) in Attack.  When I teach Balance I burn 75!!! In Pump I burn 250 and in RPM I burn 300. Not worn it in Combat yet. Will wear it this Fri for my own curiousity!

I do teach it with passion and enthusiasm so its not because I dont give it 100% ( girls in my class call me the bionic woman or machine because I DO WORK HARD)
