How did you discover Les Mills classes?

How did you discover Les Mills classes, above all, BodyPump? In which circumstances?

    Tell us your story.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

I discovered Les Mills through my 16 year old daughter, who had started doing Bodystep with a friend. One day she asked if I wanted to go with her. I was reluctant, had the idea that I could do better exercising on my own than stepping up and down a bench, seemed a bit silly to me. And the idea of exercising with other, far more fit people who had been doing it for ages was sort of off-putting.

Yes, I'm admitting my ignorance and stupidity...  at that time, that is. Now I know far better, and of course I am addicted.

When your teenager asks you to do a mother-daughter thing you just CAN'T say no, you have to grab every moment they actually want to hang out with you! So I went with her, and the rest is history. Thank you, my girl!

When I started looking for more classes to do, BodyPump was a natural choice, I wanted to tone and also work more on the upper body.

Here's the twist: My daughter stopped doing BS a few months after I started - no, not because of me, she discovered she liked the weight room better. Now I'm in the process of getting HER addicted to Bodypump - she's coming with me to the next class. Big Smile

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

    First came RPM

I belonged to a Gym and always gazed in the room while I was there at lunch. Made mention of it to the instructor once or twice. Then one day I saw him walking towards the room with a clip board while I was on the elliptical. He showed it to me, it was the sign in sheet and my name was on it and he said I had to get in there. I got my butt handed to me. after about 2 weeks It was my addiction

    1.5 years later

My wife joined a gym close to our home (the other was near my work) I had o interest in the place but went as a visitor to check out their RPM. The Gym offered me a sweet deal on a membership so I bit, now I belong to two gyms! This was a golds gym and had Pump also. I tried it with my son and son-in-law and I recall during the secont track looking over at them and saying "We are SO screwed".... I was sore for days. Meanwhile I am still riding RPM and the addiction grows deeper, how can I get more? TEACH. So nov. 2008 I became a RPM instructor. Still loving pump.........to sum up, Two days ago I was given a "pass" on my Body Pump module, so begins the second chapter :)

Through the awesome thing called technology and my two (then 16 year old) class mates. They had "become fans" of BP on Facebook, that constantly gives you atomized recommendations of fan pages. The Bodypump one showed up a couple of times, and this all coincided with me joining a new gym who carrying some of the LM programs. Me got curious, tried one class out, and ta-da - I got hooked.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

I was teaching at a large chain in the USA that has it's own really crappy version of cycling.  I won't name it's name but I'm told some of them are open 24 HOURS.  Anyway, I was subbing, the members were loving my classes, and I was passed over for three regular classes as they came open, classes I took as a particiapant.  I did not have a primary group cert yet, so I thought that may be the reason.  I was looking on the website to take that course, but instead of choosing the option to find the course, I choose the option to find employement.  A LM gym in my area was looking for instructors.  I went to thier recruiting event, was hired, signed up for the RPM module, and took my first RPM class ever...in that order.  Bodypump soon followed.  I've never looked back and would never teach a freestyle class again!

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

I had never set foot in a gym in my life until someone I was studying with dragged me along to their gym on a "bring a friend / LesMills launch day", the theme being fancy dress. I planned to stay for "a wee bit" and nick off quietly but the staff were all handing out costumes to those who thought they had ducked under the radar and not dressed up.

So there I was, pushed  FRONT row of a pump class wearing a Hawaiian Lei and a pink tu-tu with two donuts on my bar. Feeling entirely ridiculous.... but having the time of my life! That class absolutely rocked. Those two instructors team-teaching exuded ridiculous energy and vitality from every pore.I wanted to bottle that class and take it home. (Even the fact that I still couldn't walk without wincing FOUR days later didn't dampen my enthusiasm)

Well I became a Les Mills convert (tried them all) and they are now part of my life about five days a week. I did my Cert III and IV and was able to gain my Bodyvive cert and now teach three times a week. Sadly, being a Pump instructor was a little out of my realm as I am a 50kg whippet (I have a dance background) but participate once, sometimes twice a week in the attempt to transform my spaghetti arms! Perhaps I am being one vicariously by hovering around the Pump forums...hope you don't mind!

So there you are. You guys have the ability to change lives. Thankyou.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

My story is a very typical one ..... dragged along by my t'other-half.

She'd been doing Pump for years while I was more into long-distance running. The inevitable knee injury stopped me running and slobbing about the house did the rest of the damage. So, I was in poor shape and felt extremely out-of-place going into that class for the first time.

Irony is that now I'm the BP-obsessee and t'other-half is now running half-marathons.

The forum member "pipera" is not a Les Mills Instructor, though his posts, signature and profile will falsely claim otherwise.

Since he has been economical with the truth on his profile, read the real facts here.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

I had been teaching freestyle for years in an environment where there wasn't any LM at all. The few BP classes I had done when on holidays were rather uninspiring so I never bothered to take it up. Then I moved to Sydney, Australia and discovered some true LM legends who teach here.

They inspired me to go on and do my BP certification and I haven't looked back since!

I still teach freestyle step and cycle and love every minute of it, but also thoroughly enjoy the regularity and consistence that the LM provides. I teach alongside some amazing LM role models here in SYD and that certainly helps staying enthusiastic about it.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

My friend and I joined a local gym. In the beginning I mostly did spinning and stuff like circuit, but one day I decided to try BB - my first LMI class. I ended up liking it a lot and did it along with spinning and circuit for a while. Then I heard a few acquaintances talk about BC, which really sparked my interest, since I've always wanted to try martial arts. I went to try it, fell in love and added it to my training regime. Soon along came BA, then BS, then BP and finally BJ... Saying that Les Mills changed my life would be so cheesy, but it did. My interests, body and way of living have transformed drastically.

I'm yet to try Vive and RPM, but their time will come, too.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

My story is the following :

I often went to my local gym club with my girlfriend since 2005 but I often did circuits like Sofja

In September 2007, my gf ,who got bored by circuit, suggested me to try a LM class which we never did before.

My first class was BP 61 #, it was awsome, very crowdy class! Big Smile The irony is then , my gf never came back to a BP class but prefer running or doing circuits...

And since then I never look back :3 or 4 times a week for BP + other Les Mills classes like BA, BC, RPM & BJ, and become so addicted (like a drug) that even on holidays I have to locate a LM Class on the place I'll be.  I have not tested BS or BV yet but why not in some future days..

     François.

Re: How did you discover Les Mills classes?

Joined a gym back in November 2003 as I was planning on doing a half marathon the following March and didn't want to spend winter running around outside.....

Did the half marathon (under two hours too....) and didn't really want to go running again in a hurry so thought I'd wander in to one of the classes on the timetable - I think it was peak physique (think a freestyle pump class), thought it was ok so though I'd try a couple more - I think at this gym the only LM class on the timetable at the time was combat (pump and step came later). Was pretty unco in there and bit daunted by being the only bloke in a class full of 20 women but thought I'd keep going......

Rest is history really. Although after 12 months or so of combat the instructor asked if I'd considered becoming an instructor too and my reply was "nah, I'd never be any good at it". Wish I had of had the nerve to give it a go back then instead of umming and ahhing for a few years before taking the plunge.

As a member of GoodLife Fitness here in Canada who have the exclusive rights to LM.

2 Years ago, some coworkers who finally convinced me to try RPM,  liked it so much that I started doing it regularly  3-5 times a week.

But I wanted some diversity so I tried the other program to find out what I like...
