anyone walk out of a class??

hey guys, just wondering if anyone has walked out of a class or an instructor experience this? A friend of mine (who loves Attack) walked out of a class last weekend as she didn't like what the instructor was doing. It has to be noted that our normal Attack instructor had the day off so this was a sub Attack instructor that my mate walked out on. My mate claimed the instructor was mixing it up too much, doing really old stuff and she just didn't like it so left. Our normal instructor is fantastic and Attack is always full, in fact you have to get to the gym earlier so you get a place, every time the class is on. If an instructor has experienced this how did it make you feel?

Body Attack...Everything else is a warm up!!

I haven't had it happen to me during class. Only prior when I was subbing a Combat for an Attack before I was Attack qualified so the participants got something similar-ish, and a lady stated she didn't do Combat, didn't like it so left. Did feel pants but wasn't my fault so.... got over it.

I have only ever walked out of one class, although have stuck some terrible ones, all freestyle I have to say.I walked out of  freestyle spin because the instructor was late, didn't say anything, and I do mean any-thing for the first ten minutes, then said 'Stand -15 minutes out of the saddle' And with that I was off. That was during my travels at a club in SAfrica. Really really really awful.

It can't be a good feeling, so that' s why I will stay unless it is truly awful/ unsafe. But everyone is entitled to their opinion and if your friend walked out they had their own reasons which I'm sure they would have been happy to let the instructor know had they asked?

LOL! Sure!  Over the years I've walked out on lots of classes, especially in the days of all freestyle classes and freelance instructors. It's a lot better now when a program certified sub will teach a standardized release.

In the bad old days, almost invariably it was a sub or new instructor that should never have been allowed on stage without supervision. And usually I would leave a note with the GFM stating what I did, who the instructor was, and why.

    Three things :

Before you walk out you have to strongly feel the instructor is lacking an essential apptitude or talent for the job.

Subbing is different from regular teaching and there are experienced subs and there are opportunists.

I'd hate myself for walking out on a sub just because I didn't like their class.

As to how the instructor felt after I walked out, I hope they took it as a message.

    Rex

Also remember that your regular instructor was probably the one that picked the sub, so a quick comment to them the next time you see them will be your vote on whether that sub is used again.

Check out my facebook page. I'm always looking for a few good friends. Oh, Excuse me... May I motivate you?

I haven't walked out but someone has walked out from my class. I remember the first time, it probably stays on my mind forever Stick out tongue first this lady (freestyle class) complained out loud but not directly to me that it was hot, then that the class was crowded, then I had my hands the wrong way (hey, who's the instructor?!!), then she said to me that the music was too loud. I turned the volume down a notch, then she complained that it was too quiet! I was already in Fury and I told her that if you don't like, you can leave. She left. The class was a "company class", a group which had paid for a season, 1hr/week. The participants who stayed were smiling for the rest of the class and afterwards one lady came to me and told me that the person who left was very difficult at work as well and everyone had always been annouyed with her whining about everything. She never returned so actually I lost one customer but hey, the ones who stayed were happy.

I walked out during the hairspray song every time, but I just went outside and ran then came back.  I've never walked out of a Les Mills class (well one time during Pump the power was out so I left because there was no music); but I've walked out of lots of freestyle classes when an instructor was just horrible.

Hellrazor only walks out if we are off the beat!!!! (ONLY KIDDING!!! _ I am NOT starting THAT discussion AGAIN!!!)

Actually at my gym we have a Vive then a freestyle step class then Pump back to back - I have subbed the freestyle class a few times prior to my pump class and people walk out all the time start w/ 30 end w/ 15 - it is so disconcerting.  some people back to back classes so feel they don't "need" the ab & cool down portion - some people don't like that we pause for a heart rate check midway (which is required - not my choice) I spoke to the instructor & she said 'that is just they way they are"  but in turn she has to beg people to sub since her class is so rude.  Knowing how I felt when people walked out of my class - I am hard pressed to walk out of someone elses - if I know I am going to have to leave I try to give the instructor a heads up.

Actually there were a few freestyle instructors (one in a Pump like class one in a Spin class and one in a Step class) that were off-beat and I left and have and will never take their class again.  In fact if I ever see one of them subbing I leave before class starts and I refuse to attend if their name is on the schedule, I think they have issues hearing or caring about the beat.  I have honestly just thought Spin was always taught off-beat so I haven't even tried another Spin class since (although I would give RPM a shot if it was ever offered nearby).  So consider that my blessing on LM classes and instructors, you guys do alot better job than most on staying on-beat and especially following the 32-beat structure and I appreciate it greatly.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

in one Virgin gym I experienced one pump-like class which was the ultimate worst ever. First of all the class started about 10 minutes late, apparently the instructor didn't show up and they had to get a sub quickly. Well this guy..hmm..how would I express myself, he didn't give a sh**t, his expression was so totally annoyed when he arrived that it was a real downer to start with. He started by putting the music on the backgroud so quiet that we could hear the music from the weight gym side. We started with biceps Indifferent , one hand the "proper" way, the other hand the opposite way so the balance was really difficult to keep. We did biceps for over 5 minutes... at the same time he loitered around the room, looked out from the windows and counted 8-7-6-5 etc all the time. He was chewing gum and even added lip gloss at some point! The class was horrendous!!! I didn't walk out because I wanted to see everything he does Stick out tongue

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

The first time I tried Attack I walked out after 5 minutes, being frustrated by my lack of coordination... But I eventually come back and things got a little easier.

Sure it happens sometimes.. It seems to me the more experienced you become as an instructor the less it bothers you. When you are new it can happen all the time, simply because you don't have the skill sets that some other instructors have taken years to develop...

Having said that the other day two people made faces and walked out right in the middle of my class and it sill made me grumble inside! (it was a freestyle class though....)

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

    Let's see.....

I once limped out of a body attack class once - had a huge cramp in both calves and could barely march on the spot, let alone run. I also hobbled out of a combat class ages ago - I'd been on a team building thing and copped a kick in the ribs on some dumb climbing thing. Thought I was ok until I started to do combat - turns out that I'd cracked a rib.

I've only ever walked out of a class once and - it was meant to be combat but was covered with something else way different to combat. I managed 15 minutes but after rolling my shoulders and head for that long and waiting for the punching and kicking to start I just couldn't take it any longer.

The first few times I had people walk out of classes I did take it pretty personally but as has been mentioned you get a thicker skin after a while (and there's plenty of legitimate reasons why people might need to leave, not just because the class was crap). One gym I've covered at actually has a sign up asking that people respect the cover instrcutors as they would a normal instructor as they've often put themselves out at short notice to cover the class which otherwise may have been cancelled. Thought that was nice, not that people will pay that much attention to it.....

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

i would never walk out on an instructor, not to mention that all 3 BA instructors in Israel are friends i would give my life for.

if i ever felt i couldn't finish the class i'd sit aside but not walk out of it

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

I've walked out of a handful.  All but one have been due to feeling pain in the ankles or knees.  In those cases my health is of higher importance than the instructor's feelings.  The other case was a new instructor in BJ who spent five minutes explaining the entire chorry of a sequence rather than building it up step-by-step.  Since I was getting cold standing there I walked out.  He doesn't teach that way any more and his classes are a lot better for it.
Gym life: participant only. Currently doing Combat, Pump, Attack, Balance & Jam. Now retired from Step due to continual grumbling from ankles.

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

I know a female participant who doesn't like a certain instructor (don't know why), and this instructor was covering for a regular instructors class. As soon as the participant walked in and saw the instructor on the stage, she walked out again.... I think that is rude personally.

I've been tempted to walk out of a class, not because of the music or anything, but because I felt exhausted, had no energy...etc... but in moments like those I just tell myself that the gym is good for me and I NEED to be there, so I stay and finish the class  Smile

Re: anyone walk out of a class??

I admit that I am guilty of walking out of class particularly on the lower body condition track. It is not that I don't like BodyAttack (infact I am addicted to it), it it just RPM starts rights after the BodyAttack class. I have to reserve bikes 15 minutes before the class starts. It I try to finish BodyAttack, then there wouldn't be any bike left for me to do RPM.
    RPM is a CULTURE...
