The key driver of the retention benefit of Les Mills programs is increasing the number of times a club member attends group fitness. To calculate the likely benefit we need to know how often members currently attend group fitness classes in a week at the club. For example what proportion of participants attend once a week, what proportion attend twice a week and so on. Often a club owner will not know for sure what these proportions are. However they may be able to make an educated guess. Failing this the American Sports Data statistics can be used as a default.
In order to be able to calculate the number of members currently using group fitness it is necessary to know the average number in each class. The club owner or group fitness manager should be tracking this and will be able to supply this figure. If not an educated guess is required.
This number should be easily available and covers all group fitness classes. By knowing this figure and multiplying it by the average number in group fitness classes, it is possible to know the total number of group fitness visits per week.
The value to a club owner of an increase in retention comes about from being able to receive ongoing fees from the club members who would have left but have decided to stay as a result of their increased attendance. Therefore to calculate this, the average membership fee paid per annum by a member must be known.
This is the percentage of members each year that the club retains. Ideally the club owner knows this information or can make an educated guess. Failing this the figure quoted of 55% in the FIA research can be used as a default. This figure of 55% means that 55% of current members will be retained as members next year.
