Qualified To Teach

Profile

I was born and raised in Colorado and moved to Arizona a couple years ago for graduate school. While in Arizona, I completed my Masters, became certified in Body Pump and RPM, ran my first 1/2 marathon, and managed to stay tan all year long! While I had a good time in the desert, I recently returned home to Denver. I mised my family, the seasons, and the Rocky Mountains too much! I love teaching, but am also interested in pursuing a career in a health and wellness field. I am going back to school for nutrition this spring!

I have always been active. I played soccer as a kid, have skied and snowboarded my whole life, and always enjoyed hiking and running. However, I was never one to "work-out" at the gym. When I was in college I was introduced to Les Mills and quickly fell in love with Body Pump, Body Combat, and RPM. I planned my schedule around the gym's group fitness schedule and anticipated the next launch! There were some amazing instructors at the Pulse Fort Collins that inspired me and motivated me in every class.

When I moved to Arizona, I was fortunate to find ChamBo Wellness Center which not only had the Les Mills programs, but also amazing instructors. Little did I know that they would become my mentors and incentive to become an instructor myself! For many years I have loved taking the Les Mills classes, but now I am absolutely loving being an instructor! Even though I am a total gym junkie, I still enjoy outdoor activities and recently began competing in triathlons. My hope as a Les Mills coach is to motivate others, help them to achieve their results, and to continue to spread the good word about this fantastic, world-class, group fitness program. I also hope to continue to challenge myself by improving my own fitness level and goals! Life is good!

Availability

I am moving back home to Denver, CO Feb 1st, 2008 and am interested in teaching. I am currently available mornings, afternoons, and evenings. As I find employment, I will update. I love LES MILLS and hope to continue teaching RPM and BodyPump! I am leaving an awesome team of instructors ... :(

HI
Nice to hear from you!
I am in Broomfield at Lakeshore Athletic Club. It is about 25 min from Bladium.
We have bodyvive and launching Bodycombat this summer. That is awesome you will be going through it, it is my favorite program! Yes I am going to the quarterly in June, I talked to Krista about going to dinner or something on Friday night....I think I am going to the GFM seminar too.

Hi Lauren! I hope all is good with you :) I am sorry for such late reply but here are my answers to your questions. Hope this info help and let me know if I can be of any further help. Big Hug, K

1) If a member suffers from shoulder pain, due to muscle fatigue, the first thing we can do as Instructor is to assess their Target Zone, they might just be bringing their bar to high and using more of their
shoulders muscles than their chest muscles. Next check their ROM, some time over-extension with high repetitions can lead to shoulder pain, here is when we can suggest them to lay flat on the floor. I do recommend this to participants with an old or current shoulder injury, together with a lighter weight. But the most important part will be to recommend them to see the Doctor if they haven't yet to discard any serious injury :) It is not our job to offer a diagnose and/or
treatment.

2)Either for the chest or triceps track when lying prone on the bench, we coach feet hip width apart ON THE FLOOR. the main reason is
to free the hip flexors as well as through great coaching encourage correct spine alignment, as when the feet are elevated, the lower back will tend to be pressed down towards the bench if the knees come close
to the chest, or too high off the bench if their knees move forward from their hips. If there is any lower back discomfort, encourage your participants to stack 1 or 2 large plates and place their feet flat on them, this will help them to take the pressure off their back. Please keep in mind that many factors can affect lower back pain and that thess minor changes might not get rid of the pain instantly; that is why is SUPER important to keep re enforcing abdominal contraction through cues such as, Braced abs, belly bottom towards spine, draw in your abs
and tighten, etc to help them achieve abdominal strength which may assist on reducing any lower back pain or discomfort.

3)I believe there is not a written rule anywhere on how many raisers you need, having said that we use the DVDs as standard , and everybody uses 2 risers in NZ. Having said that we recommend a bench height when the participants' knees are higher than their hips when laying on the bench.

4)this is a tough one.... My best recommendation will be to check with your club's management (GFM for example) and have them create a standard. Personally I will make sure that any new participant in class uses a lighter weight (they will definitely get the workout and BP experience due to the high reps) and master my CRC and Follow up
cues. If they still "don't get it" i will personally approach them after the track or after class.

5)Always follow your choreography notes. If the option on the floor requires any modification from the "standard floor static lunges" I am sure it will be specified

6)Once again this is something that will have to be determined by your GFM or club management. We do recommend 2 weeks of uninterrupted "New Release" presentation.
I have never heard of "teaching the same release through the whole quarter" either. Actually we encourage our instructors to mix and match releases once they decide to move away from the latest launched release as members can get bored with The same music and exercises over and over.
If a participant wants to increase their load, they do not need to be doing the same class over and over. They can definitely do this with any release they are being taught. We even recommend an increase and/or decrease in weight according to the track we are teaching (length of track, exercises, repetition, speed, etc)
