Hey people.

I have worked as a Fitness Manager for a large Health Club for some years now.

In terms of teaching classes, I started as a freestyler (hence the name 'Mr Step') teaching Step (surprise!), Aerobics, Circuits, LBT, Body Conditioning, Aqua Aerobics etc etc... and was actually quite anti-LM, like alot of freestylers. However, once I got my current job I noticed that they could never get Body Combat cover if the 2 instructors were off, so I thought "Get your financial thinking head on here Tim!" This was a no brainer. So after attending weeks of regular BC classes, I took the Combat module in early 2005.

Initially I had a struggle on my hands as the main instructor teaching BC at my club taught 'facing the crowd', never did a launch, never taught tracks he didn't like, changed the choreography if he didn't like it, never attended a workshop, hadn't ever submitted his video... (should I go on?) and participants were not responsive to me as I went 'by the book'. In fact they were often quite aggressive in their approach and I considered giving it up. But I stuck with it. The other BC instructor wasn't as bad, but she would speed up her music and it became quite unsafe! She would also take out the breaks in her Body Pump classes! However, they are both ancient history. I eventually won those participants over and introduced BC (and BP) Launches to the Club. Now people know what a 'Launch' means and there is always a buzz building up to one.

It has been a difficult road and I continue to struggle with club apathy (including current GFM and past GM's) towards LM and the programmes, but I am happy to fight for the LM cause.

Oh, and I don't freestyle anymore. LM is where it's at for me. If I could have a 100% LM timetable I'd be happy, but that is one war I would NOT win!

Now if only we could get a Body Balance Instructor!

Enjoy your classes everyone, whether you teach or participate. Love 'sparring' with some of you on the forum here.

Stay Healthy and Happy

Yeah my friend and I noticed that - "use more than your usual PLUS add" - and they claim it's a short track, too! Uh, no, we've had tons of sub-4-min tracks in the last number of releases and this one is like 4.18 or something like that! That is NOT a short track! I do agree that the rows, to be effective, need more weight than curls, but if you can't take it off, you gotta keep the ending SO SUPER SHORT. The idea that someone can maintain that heavy weight for all of that ending is a little nutso.

To be honest, I don't put much faith in their weight suggestions, which is part of the reason why I go through the entire release myself a number of times with my usual weights, so I can gauge if I think a track is easier, harder, or same as usual. E.g. Susan Tolj said "oh you can use more than your usual" for BP63 Triceps (Faster Kill Pussycat) and that damn track has so much extension work to the head my hands would fall off if I tried that! It's just not physically possible for me - that track is frickin' tough and I don't know what crack she is smoking thinking it's an easier one!

So now that's fascinating to me - I'm not a fan of track 4! Just cos I'm so sick of E-Type and I don't even like this particular song - I've liked some E-Type tracks alright (I don't think I've ever loved one!) but this one, eh. Sometimes I like them because the work is crazy tough (e.g. Africa) but this one, it's like the song feels boring to me, and the work isn't that superspecial that it makes up for it. I tend to like the more Casacade-style back tracks (with the female and less synthesized voices) - I loved BP66 for example. And BP63 (Think about the way.) The back track will be the first one I mix out. LOL! Which just goes to show - that's why opinions vary so much and why they can't please everyone. It's not like my members ever know cos I'm like an excited kid about everything in every release, but it's just not a personal fav of mine.

Yeah team teaching can be awesome or just awkward, and it depends so much on the style of instructors, how they teach and, let's be honest, whether they're any good. I enjoy it but try to choose (where I can) who I team teach with so that it comes across well.

Oh I totally know what you mean about GFMs - I've had my share who didn't care one bit (one who was my GFM for two years never ONCE saw me even teach a class! Then had the nerve, one day, to decide he had to "discuss" my teaching with me - HA!) and I do find that the non-Les-Mills-crazies just never get it. Even when they organise team teaching etc, they don't really get what it's all about - e.g. Instructors showing up and being told to wear this boring black and white shirt so we all look co-ordinated. Hello, launches are for OUTFITS, people! It's like LM Halloween! And it's tough when no one seems to care about or demand team practices ... then you get to the launch and everyone looks a mess. Especially if you end up with instructors who learned the choreo differently! Yeah does happen.

Okay hopping off my soapbox now ...!

I do it because it's fun, and because I teach with my best friend. The funny thing is, we teach together at this really small club, and we have like maybe 5 people in our class! But whatever they deserve all the craziness we would bring to a class of 50! And they just laugh at us now!!! They're like ah what are you doing this time. When we told them we'd beat James Bond this time they were like nah way. Hahahahaha. It was fun having them show up for BC36 and going why on earth are you wearing ties and then the James Bond theme came on for LB warmup and it's like "ahhhh we geddit now."

Oh that's so funny that Paralyzer didn't make it to your neck of the woods! It was all over the radio here, I knew the song when it was on the Pump release. It's funny though because other songs I've known because they were Aussie and then the Yanks don't know 'em!

Oh man so I was practicing BP this morning (I always practice a whole bunch of times with my real weights) and I just CAN NOT add on for that bicep track! I'm starting to think like anyone who can add weight and maintain form after the rows for 10 bottom halves and 10 top halves then the superslows wasn't using enough to begin with! I feel like if your bicep weight is good enough, you truly can't add on! Did you manage?

Hey! Haha I love watching all you troublemakers on the forum you crack me up.

So I looove BP67! It's funny actually, because at the Quarterly I was like "eh whatever" about some of the tracks and they are the ones that grew on me the most, it's always like that! I think that's part of why people immediately like tracks where they know the words of the song (e.g. I bet Paralyzer will be a big hit right off the bat) cos of the familiarity. But I found at the Quarterly I was less than enthusiastic about Squats and Shoulders and I freakin' love 'em now. We are launching on Monday so I'm very excited! The outfit: the Nike dance boots Rach wore for Combat (practical? Who cares!) with a black BP Skort and red cowboy hat - in honour of the Bicep track! HAHA.

Combat is worse actually - we're doing Blade but one of us is the vampire hunter and one is the vampire! (I'm the vampire.) Outfit is somewhat similar to Rach's only with black nails, fishnet wraps, choker, big black ring with a skull on it, tons of eyemakeup (we'll see how that goes!) and "blood" (aka eyeliner) dripping from the corner of my mouth. My class are going to be freaked ...!

Hey Mr Step
Hows it going? Thought you had dissappeared off the forum, hadnt seen a post from you in ages.
I have now done my combat module woooowooo and loving it!! Hoping to do my video very soo, however I only job share a class so only taught it 3 times so far - BOO! love 36 but not looked at 37 yet cos I need to stay focused on 36. But I am about to add RPM to my portfolio now too. I left my GFM position and now just freelance so managed to persuade another club to take on RPM. Module training is in Dec.
Hope all is good with you, read your profile and you sound a bit like me, I used to be anti LM till I did it now I love it - Its the way forward definately, I find Freestyle classes a big yawn when I participate now.
Take care and sorry for writing you a novel! :D

Mr S! Love your story but its got me singing now. YOU GOTTA FIGHT, FOR YOUR RIGHT, TO COOOOMBAT!!

Alls well with me mate. Haven't had the time to go on here much but do sneak on every once in a while to check out the latest info on new releases and, of course, to BLAH.

Classes are rocking, combat is THE place to be at one club and we've just added another 2 classes with THE MAN Huw taking the lead on those - now this boy can KICK! Jam sorta flunked with the latest release but numbers are starting to rise again.

Just got the launch dates through for Oct. Theme is Mission Impossible - I'm thinking more Lara Croft. Already been on ebay to check out gun holsters to strap around legs!

You all set for your launch? Can't do Quarts this time but desperate for my music to arrive!
