Assessment

After completing Initial Training Les Mills instructors undergo a further assessment period to achieve their qualification.

The period between Initial Training and Qualification:

  • Providing you received a “pass A or B grade” at the module, you may teach after completing your initial training and before you get your assessment results.

  • NOTE: Your assessment must be submitted to Les Mills within three months of training for you to remain as a Les Mills Instructor and teach in your licensed club. If you are not able to submit your video within the deadline provided please complete an Extension Request Form and sent to karina@lesmillsusa.com before the deadline.

To achieve the Les Mills Instructor Qualification:

  • You need to submit a video of you teaching your class within 12 weeks of completing your initial training module.

  • The guidelines for assessment are found in the Appendix V of your Program Instructor Manual. We look forward to receiving your assessment.

  • You also need to pay for the assessment online in the store.

Key components of the Les Mills assessment system:

Les Mills’ approach to assessment is one that combines an assessor’s observations with a systemized approach to providing feedback that will ensure each instructor receives a detailed action plan for their ongoing development.

In determining a PASS, WITHHELD or RESUBMIT each assessor will be looking at the total amount of critical corrections required in the compulsory elements. These elements are primarily in Choreography, Physical Execution and Coaching, detailed in the instructor manual.

In BODYSTEP™ we would also look at step heights as defined by the choreographers.

To ensure efficiency and consistency in assessment instructors are required to meet a certain number of COMPETENCY items according to each program.

Instructor Certification Assessment:

There are four possible grades or outcomes that an instructor can obtain in their Instructor Certification Assessment:

DISTINCTION

This instructor possesses the ‘X’ or ‘WOW’ factor.

This grade is awarded when an instructor shows that Mastery has been achieved in ALL Key Element assessment skills.

These instructors should be brought to the attention of the Training Manager as potential Trainers and/or presenters.

PASS

This grade is awarded when the instructor achieves competency in ALL compulsory skills assessed under Choreography, Technique and Coaching. There are 6 compulsory assessment skills or questions for all programs except BODYJAM™; in BODYJAM™ there are 5 assessment skills.

WITHHELD

This grade is awarded when the instructor only achieves competency in 4 to 5 compulsory assessment skills for all programs except BODYJAM™. In BODYJAM™ a WITHHELD would be the outcome if the instructor only achieved competency in 4 of 5 compulsory assessment skills. Please note - there can be a maximum of ONE non-competent technique skill in this assessment outcome. Should there be more than one, then the instructor will have to resubmit a video for Assessment.

This instructor will be required to have a Club Representative co-sign a Quality Assurance form to advise they have achieved competency within four weeks for a PASS to be awarded.

RESUBMIT

This grade is awarded when the instructor only achieves competency in 1 to 3 compulsory assessment skills for all programs except BODYJAM™. In BODYJAM™ a RESUBMIT would be the outcome if the instructor only achieved competency in 1 to 3 compulsory assessment skills.

This instructor is required to resubmit an Assessment video or DVD and co-sign a Quality Assurance form with their Club Representative for a PASS to be awarded.
