Where do you teach LES MILLS™ classes?

I teach Les Mills classes in and around Cambridge, UK. Predominantly at Nuffield Health Cambridge and the Frank Lee Centre at Addenbrooke’s hospital.

Tell us a little bit about your background. What led you into the fitness industry?

After being medically discharged from the military in my early 20s I had a thirst for knowledge around physiology and rehab (due to the nature of my injuries). This led me to do a Gym Instructor and Exercise to Music Qualification. I then went to Egypt to work for a holiday company in Dahab delivering their aerobics and water aerobics programs (along with other activities and evening entertainment). It was when I returned from Egypt that I discovered Les Mills classes (I had joined a gym and taken part in a BODYCOMBAT™ class). The gym I was working for at the time agreed to put me on a BODYATTACK and BODYSTEP™ course, and that’s when my instructor journey started. The rest, as they say, is history. I now teach BODYATTACK™, BODYSTEP™, BODYPUMP™, BODYCOMBAT, CXWORX™ and RPM™.

What is your favorite program and track?

Ooh this is difficult. I love all the programs I teach! I would have to say that I love to teach BODYATTACK track 9 very much as this is the point in the class where you can really see a difference when you motivate your participants, especially because they are already fatigued.

What do you love about teaching?

There are two main things that I love about teaching. Firstly, I am a performer. I love being in front of people and delivering something compelling. Secondly, I love helping people, in any way that I can (this doesn’t just apply to teaching). To be a facilitator for change in so many people is phenomenal. I don’t care about the praise or the thank you’s, it’s the subtle knowledge that I have helped as many people as I can. 

What has been your biggest accomplishment/most rewarding moment?

There was one moment when I was launching BODYATTACK 84, I was teaching tracks 1-4 and then shadowing for the rest of the class. Whilst I was teaching I noticed a woman who I had not seen before (we didn’t get a chance to talk before the class). When we got to the later tracks she really started to fatigue. I did all of the low options with her for the rest of the class and kept trying to get her to the end. She did get to the end, and is now fitter, has lost a ton of weight, and has loads of confidence that just wasn’t there before. She has also found a group of people at the gym that she likes to hang around with socially, all because she had the courage to come to that first class. She has told me on multiple occasions that I was the reason why she got through her first class. She has also come out to Stockholm this weekend for support!

Tell us how you pass on your motivation to others?

I think largely this comes out through my physicality and voice. I work very hard on my personal fitness so that I can look and act the part when I teach. I also love that I have a really large range in the way I can use my voice, which I think really helps with motivation.

What’s your best fitness tip?

Persistence is the key in fitness. If you persist, you will achieve your goals. It will not come overnight, but it will come in time.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Domino’s Pizza (oh, and the occasional Wispa Gold, and Cadburys Caramel eggs when they come out at Easter) :s
