Summer time can take a knock on your self-esteem when more skin is on show, and the option of hiding behind layers of clothing isn’t ideal. But fret not dear friend, it’s never too late to start an exercise programme and we’re here to help.

Summer can be a hard time to remain motivated to exercise. What with July 4 celebrations, barbeques and pool parties, it’s a great time to be outdoors having fun. But summer time can take a knock on your self-esteem when more skin is on show, and the option of hiding behind layers of clothing isn’t ideal. But fret not dear friend, it’s never too late to start an exercise program and we’re here to provide you with some valuable inspiration to get moving this summer! 

Get into a routine 
They say it takes two weeks to create a habit so if you have a plan of attack, you’re more likely to stick to it. Take a look at your gym’s schedule and decide what programs suit you. Your gym will offer a whole range of group fitness classes with awesome moves and music to suit everyone – and they are proven to get results – from Les Mills’ BODYPUMP™ to SH’BAM™ and BODYCOMBAT™. Attend a class at a time that suits you – that will minimize the likelihood of excuses - before work, during your lunch hour, or on your way home before heading to the beach. 

Get the right fit 
Make sure you have the right clothing, which can make all the difference to your workout. A good pair of exercise shoes is essential, as is comfortable clothing that doesn’t feel too tight or restricts your movement in a warm room. 

Speak to the experts 
Your gym facility is a friendly and social place, so don’t feel awkward about approaching instructors to get their advice. Staff can also set up an exercise plan that will work for you and to set some goals – whether you’re hoping to get fit, tone up or lose weight - so if you’re after some help or a second opinion, don’t be shy, speak to the experts. 

Stick with it 
Back to that ‘two weeks to create a habit’ business…sure it’s going to be a struggle at first adjusting to a routine when the sun is shining, and it’s humid out, but after a while you’ll start to feel healthy, happy and bursting with those magic endorphins that boost your confidence. Be gentle with yourself at first but stick with your plan and the results will come. Patience is a virtue, my friend. 

You are what you eat 
Summer is a brilliant time to take advantage of fresh fruit and vegetables, and eat plenty of lean protein to help you feel extra healthy and vibrant inside. Think of all the delicious smoothies and scrumptious salads you can make to give your body an extra kick. Allow yourself the occasional treat for working so hard – but remember portion size is important. Watch your alcohol intake, and always remember to drink plenty of water to keep your fluids up during the humid weather. 

Have fun 
Hey let’s face it, it’s hard to get motivated sometimes, but when you get the knack of it, exercise should be fun and something important which you look forward to doing on a daily basis. Take control of your health and future by getting physically active and staying focused. Remember, don’t push yourself too hard and enjoy yourself!
