Club of the Month

The Jubilee Sports Centre at University of Southampton is delivering on its mission to make fitness, sports, and wellness accessible for everyone. By fully embracing omnifitness, the club supports students to train between lectures or whenever suits their lifestyle best.

With 55 live classes and 39 virtual classes on offer each week, members are reaping the benefits of a flexible timetable. Launching virtual classes resulted in 635 attendances in the first month, an uplift of 14% in overall group training check-ins. We spoke with Maxine Tubb Fitness Class Coordinator, to learn more about The Jubilee Sports Centre’s success with omnifitness and the expansion to facilities over the six months.

Why you are partner of Les Mills and what brings you to the partnership?

We started off with BODYPUMP a few years ago in our sports hall, it was extremely popular with our students. Once we had our new facilities on board, we knew we wanted to expand our portfolio of different exercise classes and introduce more Les Mills programmes. We knew it would help us grow our membership and we’re always able to find a Les Mills Instructor within our area.

What are some recent highlights or successes you have had in club?

The launch of our virtual classes had 635 check-ins in the first month, which equated to an additional 14% in attendance. Currently we are averaging around 11% additional attendance to these virtual sessions. The students find they’re flexible and work around their lectures. They’re attending in small friendship groups to support and motivate each other, where sometimes a live environment can be daunting.

What makes your club special?

Six months ago we only had a sports hall to run BODYPUMP and were sharing the space with the student sport’s clubs. The time available to us was very limited, and we had no evening classes running. The indoor cycling studio was a squash court with very poor acoustics and ambience.

We now have three studios dedicated solely to group training classes! We’re offering live BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, and BODYBALANCE classes, as well as the full suite of the Les Mills Virtual classes and a fully equipped purpose-built Indoor cycle studio offering Virtual RPM, THE TRIP, and LES MILLS SPRINT.

What can other clubs learn from you?

Virtual classes are nothing to be scared of, they support facilities to offer a group exercise timetable in all hours of the day, opening the doors to members who may struggle to attend the normal peak times.

We have found that the Les Mills brand has helped us to sell memberships. It’s helped attract our international students, too. They’re aware of the global brand and know that the Les Mills name means the quality of classes are consistent across the world.
