Dit is dus het jaar waarin je fit wordt. Maar heb je er echt over nagedacht? Wat ga je precies doen? Wat is realistisch? Hoeveel is te veel? En, belangrijker nog, wat is het geheim om je eraan te houden?

Elk nieuwjaar melden duizenden mensen zich bij fitnessclubs aan om met hun goede voornemens te starten. Uit cijfers blijkt echter dat na een maand bijna de helft alweer stopt met hun goede voornemen. Verslagen, ontmoedigd en niet dichter bij een gezonder leven.

Het blijkt dat fitness net als elke andere verslaving is; het begint allemaal met een kleine dosis. "Te veel mensen maken de fout om zich volledig op het sporten te storten terwijl er eigenlijk kleine stapjes nodig zijn," zegt Bryce Hastings, Les Mills Head of Research. Hij adviseert elke nieuwe sporter om de volgende drie dingen goed in gedachten te houden:

  1. Begin langzaam - Push je lichaam niet te snel, stop met trainen wanneer het (te) zwaar wordt.
  2. Bouw het geleidelijk op – Je hoeft niet meteen een volledige workout mee te doen.
  3. Mix it up - Voeg een mix van kracht-, cardio- en flexibiliteitstraining toe.

Het is wetenschappelijk bewezen dat een langzame start, met een geleidelijke opbouw en het integreren van variatie het beste werkt.

Get Fit Together onderzoek
Get Fit Together, een onderzoek uitgevoerd door Penn State University, volgde 25 volwassenen met een zittende lifestyle door middel van een 30-weken durend programma van Les Mills lessen met een mix van cardio, kracht en flexibiliteit. De groep behaalde geweldige resultaten. Je kunt hier meer lezen over de resultaten.

Maar het echt interessante nieuws was dat tijdens de studie van 30 weken 20 van de 25 studiedeelnemers nooit een training hebben gemist - een nalevingspercentage van 98,8 procent - bijna uniek bij dit soort onderzoeken.

De sleutel tot het succes was voornamelijk de geleidelijke manier waarop de sporters zich aan hun nieuwe routine konden aanpassen. De eerste periode van zes weken was vooral bedoeld om kennis te maken met fitness. Daarna werd de intensiteit verhoogd. Dus in plaats van een overkill aan training met veel spierpijn, genoten ze er echt van!

Vergeet niet dat de eerste stap naar een fit leven geen enorme sprong voorwaarts is. De kracht is om langzaam te beginnen, het leuk te houden, maar vooral om plezier te hebben en dan volgen de resultaten vanzelf!
