What is CEREMONY HYROX? A complete guide to the new Les Mills x HYROX workouts

Training

This is where HYROX high-performance meets Les Mills magic. CEREMONY HYROX is more than a workout. The fitness professionals behind the program explain why it's a training ritual people want to return to again and again.

Quick answer: CEREMONY HYROX is a 45-minute functional training circuit that combines strength and cardio across eight functional workout stations. CEREMONY HYROX MAX adds race-specific exercises to help people build endurance, race-pace ability, and resilience for a HYROX race. These programs are created by Les Mills and chosen by HYROX as a definitive group training experience for a performance edge.

If you haven't heard of HYROX yet, you're in the minority. What began as an indoor fitness race in Germany in 2017 has grown into one of the world's fastest-growing fitness movements. The format is simple but demanding: eight 1km runs, each followed by a functional workout station, all completed in a single race. The atmosphere is electric, the challenge is addictive, and this year alone, an estimated 1.3 million people are expected to compete.

But HYROX is about more than race day. In partnership with HYROX, Les Mills recognized an opportunity to bring the same performance-driven training and powerful sense of community into everyday workouts. Enter CEREMONY HYROX and CEREMONY HYROX MAX.

These new programs combine the structure and consistency of world-class group fitness with the energy, ambition, and achievement that define HYROX racing. We spoke with Erin Maw, Rob Lee, and Khiran Huston to uncover what makes them stand out.

CEREMONY HYROX vs CEREMONY HYROX MAX: what’s the difference?

ROB LEE (Creative Team Coach & NZ Research Manager): “These are both 45-minute functional training circuit programs built on decades of industry-leading expertise. Both CEREMONY HYROX and CEREMONY HYROX MAX share the same essence. You move through eight functional workout stations designed to challenge you and keep you moving forward. Music sets the energy and pace, while expert coaches keep you locked in from start to finish.

The key difference between the programs is that CEREMONY HYROX MAX is specifically tailored to preparing for a HYROX race. Not exclusively, you can still do it if you’re an everyday gym-goer, but if you did want to prepare for a HYROX race, the elements of the CEREMONY HYROX MAX class will help prepare you for that.”

What equipment do you use in CEREMONY HYROX?

KHIRAN HUSTON (Les Mills Group Training Project Manager): “CEREMONY HYROX and CEREMONY HYROX MAX are held in a dedicated or multi-purpose space with a full range of functional equipment and a screen. There is equipment like plyo boxes, agility ladders, battle ropes, rowers, airbikes, slam balls, barbells, and weight plates.

We introduced the ‘Studio’ formats to ensure everyone can enjoy this type of training – and that means ensuring it can be enjoyed in clubs of all shapes and sizes. The CEREMONY HYROX Studio and CEREMONY HYROX MAX Studio formats can be taught in an existing studio or fitness space with a smaller range of equipment and no screen. There is equipment like the SMARTBAR™ and weight plates, the SMARTSTEP™, sculpt bands, and sliders.

Whatever format you do, you experience the same mix of cardio and strength, the same intervals and intensity, and the same community vibe.”

What makes CEREMONY HYROX different from other circuit workouts?

ROB: “There are three key elements that make the experience very unique.

Firstly, the innovative format. The work-to-rest ratios have been carefully structured, so you progress through the workout while reaching a specific training intensity. Add to this the use of lanes and exercise stations, and it creates a really efficient and enjoyable experience.

Secondly, Les Mills’ world-class coaching model has been transplanted from the group training environment into the circuit setting, which means the coaching is second to none. Coaches are on the floor, manipulating intensity to match the needs of the individual, managing class flow and guiding you to train in a place where hard meets happy.

Thirdly, you get the group effect in spades. The format and coaching create real camaraderie, and the music amplifies it. Everyone has everyone’s back, with clapping, motivation, and so much positivity. It’s pretty magical.”

KHIRAN: “Circuit training can be quite intimidating, but these workouts remove the barriers. It’s circuit training for everyone. It feels bespoke, intimate, and cool, but it’s certainly accessible. Here at Les Mills, we’re focused on making the best training trends easier to experience. With CEREMONY HYROX, our goal is to help as many people as possible enjoy the full-body benefits of phenomenal circuit training.”

What are the benefits of CEREMONY HYROX compared with other circuit training?

ROB: “Any exercise is going to deliver some benefit, but many circuit workouts don’t serve people well. When I go to boutique gyms and circuit workouts, I’m often sad to see people investing their precious time and energy, yet their movements aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do. The exercises can be too technically complex, too intimidating, and too hard to do well, while the coaches may not be using their expertise to help people get the most from the movements. [EM2]

With Les Mills’ programming, we set out to ensure every exercise delivers the best benefit for every body. We applied years of learning and expertise in group training, then brought strict movement standards into the circuit space. All the movements are functional, designed for a group setting, and built with HYROX race performance in mind. Combining this with expert coaching and a well-structured flow allows you to train with intensity and intent, so you really can perform at your best.”

What went into designing and testing the workouts to ensure they align with HYROX training standards?

ERIN MAW (Les Mills Creative): “We start by mapping out a collection of workouts to ensure variation and distinct structures. Then, within each workout, we strategically pair exercises to maximize the training outcome and help participants reach the right thresholds and targets.”

ROB: “For CEREMONY HYROX MAX, we took the elements and the demands of a HYROX race and threaded those through, and we’ve incorporated things like targets. When athletes train or move towards targets, that increases intensity and a sense of achievement – and that unlocks people's potential. We also have partner-based elements, which again increase the intensity. And with CEREMONY HYROX MAX, we introduce progression or overload, so someone can take their capacity and fitness to a whole new level through just following these workouts over time.

Like all LES MILLS workouts, these programs are scientifically designed to be balanced and avoid overload. We then test all our workouts with participants, including heart rate testing in the field, so we know the training outcome is achieved. It’s a process of constant trialing, testing, and refinement. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure everything is seamless, from the format to the movements, music, and timings. This means the coaches can focus on doing what they love and do best, delivering workout experiences that keep people engaged.”

What can you expect when you step into a CEREMONY HYROX or CEREMONY HYROX MAX workout?

ROB: “When the coach welcomes you into the room, the floor is already set up with designated stations in lanes. You get a quick overview of the workout, and then the coach moves through each station. They’ll demonstrate each exercise with key coaching points and allocate you to a starting station. There’s a three-and-a-half-minute warm-up that the whole class does together, then you head to the starting station. The music ramps up, the timer starts, and away you go. You work through stations in your lane, doing intervals of strength, cardio and, power movements. At the end, the group comes back together for core work or stretches to finish – and a whole lot of high fives!”

How does the music add to the experience?

ERIN: “The music is the engine of the workout! It reflects the energy, intensity, and hype to elevate the whole experience. We’re not doing traditional group training, where we're moving and teaching to the beat of the music, but it's still really important that the music takes athletes on a journey to help motivate and keep them in the workout. And that's exactly what the music does.”

KHIRAN: “The playlists are shaped to match the workout at all the right points. At the beginning, when you’re fresh and ready to go, the music creates focus and prepares you to train. Then, halfway through, when your energy might be dipping, we inject a feel-good song with emotional impact. This lifts you out of your headspace and clears away any doubt. Toward the end, there’s a shift to celebratory, motivational music that gives you a second wind. We always finish with a high-energy feel.”

Who is CEREMONY HYROX best for?

ROB: “Anyone who wants to build strength, fitness, and confidence. It’s an accessible, achievable, and sustainable mix of cardio, strength, and power exercises for everyone. Whether you want to train for everyday life and functional fitness, or level up to prepare for a HYROX race, these sessions are for you.

ERIN: “What I love about this is the community vibe – that’s what group training brings. It's not just me grinding in the studio by myself, having to motivate myself. I've got the Coach, and I've got the team around me, so the experience is elevated and I'm more motivated to train with this workout.”

Can CEREMONY HYROX MAX help you train for a HYROX race?

ROB: “In CEREMONY HYROX MAX, all the movements are built from the fundamental patterns seen within a HYROX race, so this class prepares athletes for those movements in a way that avoids overload and burnout. It’s a sustainable training tool for HYROX race preparation. Both Erin and I use this class for our own training, and it’s been amazing. It’s the magic of group training combined with purposeful performance work.”

What will people find most surprising about this workout?

ROB: “It’s hard, and it can push you to your limit. But you’ll be surprised by how well you go. The workouts are structured so you can manage the intensity and feel successful, whatever your level. The Studio format is particularly surprising. Sure, there’s no SkiErg, air bike, or fancy equipment, but it’s amazing how much the simple exercises can challenge you.”

Do you need to be fit to try CEREMONY HYROX?

ROB: “Because of the structure of the class, you can make it your own and push yourself to your own level. In CEREMONY HYROX, there’s a certain amount of autonomy – you don’t have to move to the beat, so if you need to slow down and focus on your form, you can. It’s never too hard, and it’s never too easy.”

KHIRAN: “I love how I’m always learning and progressing during this workout. When I hit a station where I feel confident with the movements, I can increase the intensity. And when I’m still learning the movement patterns, I can pull back. The coaches support you to work at your own intensity and pace, with a real emphasis on learning great technique.”

What should you know before your first CEREMONY HYROX workout?

ROB: “Listen to the coaching, and don’t go too hard and fast too early on. Focus on the movement quality and the intensity will come – by the end of the class, you’ll be glad you didn't race out of the gates too hard.”

How can you expect to feel when you finish?

KHIRAN: “I always feel accomplished and rewarded. I feel like my cardio fitness has been pushed and my muscles have been loaded, but I’m not completely rinsed. There’s always a euphoric sense of accomplishment – it’s a feeling I could never replicate training on the gym floor.”

Why does coaching matter in a CEREMONY HYROX workout?

ROB: Coaches underpin the whole class by driving intensity and that community vibe through their coaching. They aren’t performing the workout with members; they’re driving the workout, demonstrating the exercises, coaching and correcting. This gives them the opportunity to drive a workout from a different perspective than traditional group training.

What makes it a rewarding workout to coach?

KHIRAN: “When I am coaching the workouts, I love the community vibe. It never feels cheesy, always authentic, because you have the ability to be yourself as a coach. You can train people like you would train your mates, which is so freeing. At the same time, you can feel confident that you’re teaching a scientifically designed, smartly structured workout based on the latest innovations and science.

The other great thing is that you’re on the floor coaching (rather than up the front doing the workout), so it’s a great way to teach additional classes without fatiguing your body too much.”

How have you personally benefited from this training?

ERIN: "Doing this training in the lead-up to HYROX races has really helped me compete with confidence. I’ve gone into races feeling fit, strong and ready to perform at my best – and I’ve always been really pleased with my results, which keep getting better and better."

ROB: “This is the workout I go to when I want to see change. I get good power stimulus, good strength, good core, good cardio, and a good amount of movement patterns. If I’ve had a break from my usual routine and I want to boost my fitness, it gets me back in the game. It also pushes me to train my mental toughness. Each set, each round, ‘Can I stay in the work? Can I push myself to the end?’. I always know that building my mental fortitude will pay off come my next class and on race day.”

KHIRAN: “When I go to the gym, I want to maximize my time there. I choose CEREMONY HYROX because it delivers that total-body feel. I get to do exercise sets and combinations I wouldn’t usually do, while focusing on moving more efficiently, which helps my other workouts.”
