For those who like their classes more like immersive entertainment, THE TRIP has been thrilling people for a decade. Redefining the indoor cycling experience, THE TRIP adds a whole new layer, with stunning digital visuals projected onto a giant cinema screen, taking participants through fantasy environments, from otherworldly landscapes to futuristic velodromes.
As one of the program’s launch partners, THE TRIP has played a huge part in the class schedule of one of Stockholm's most visited gyms, accounting for 47% of all group training visits. In 2024 alone, the 3000m² SATS Stureplan has seen 65,000 participants across 1,750 TRIP classes – that’s a lot of miles!
“The impact of THE TRIP has been incredible,” says Anna Johansson, Regional Group Fitness Manager at SATS. “It has been, and continues to be, a major unique selling point for us. Not only has it attracted new participants, but it has also significantly increased class participation.”
Les Mills Nordic Campaign Manager Elise Östberg recently spoke with Adam Gripenblom, Group Fitness Instructor of the Year at SATS Stureplan, to find out what it’s like to coach the immersive cycling programme.
Hi Adam, what has your experience been as an Instructor for THE TRIP?
It’s been absolutely amazing. Every single class is a blast – it’s fun, intense, and incredibly rewarding. Seeing people get lost in the experience, pushing their limits, and leaving the room feeling energized and accomplished is just the best feeling ever. And on top of that, I’ve grown so much as an Instructor. It’s been a wild and exciting journey!
What initially drew you to become an Instructor for THE TRIP, and what has kept you motivated over the years?
I was already a Les Mills Trainer/Presenter for RPM™ and LES MILLS SPRINT™, so cycling was a huge part of my life. But when I first experienced THE TRIP – wow! It was like stepping into a whole new dimension of training. The visuals, the music, the way it just transports you into another world… I was hooked from the very first class. It wasn’t just cycling anymore; it was an adventure. That feeling, that thrill, is what’s kept me motivated. And of course, seeing the excitement and transformation in my participants makes every class worth it.
How do you adapt your teaching style to keep classes engaging and exciting for participants?
Energy is EVERYTHING. I make sure to bring enthusiasm, motivation, and a real sense of connection to every class. I want people to feel like they’re not just in a workout – they’re part of something epic. I also try to read the room and adapt to who’s there. If it’s a group of first-timers, I’ll focus on guiding them through the experience and making them feel comfortable. If it’s a bunch of regulars, I’ll challenge them to push harder, try new things, and really level up. The key is making it feel personal, fun, and a little bit like an adventure every single time.
What kind of feedback do you typically receive from participants about THE TRIP?
The most common thing I hear is: “I totally forgot I was working out!” People love how the immersive visuals and music make time fly. I’ve had participants say it’s the only cardio they actually enjoy, which is a huge compliment! Others talk about how it’s helped them improve their endurance or how it gives them that extra motivation to push themselves. And of course, there are always those who say, “That was insane – when’s the next class?”
Celebrating 10 Years of THE TRIP
THE TRIP launched a decade ago and continues to evolve with every release.
Intensity Level
Its intensity sits between RPM and LES MILLS SPRINT, making it accessible yet challenging.
3 Core Positions
Riders use three positions – Sit, Stand, and Recover – with coaching cues to guide resistance changes.
Fresh Every 3 Months
Now on Release 40 (NOVA), THE TRIP follows a three-month release cycle, featuring brand new music, visuals, and coaching.
Unique Coaching Style
Unlike RPM and SPRINT, the Instructor faces away from the class, leading the ride as if they’re on the journey too.
Can you share any specific success stories or transformations that participants have experienced through THE TRIP?
So many! I’ve had people who never thought they’d enjoy cycling become obsessed with it after trying THE TRIP. One member told me they used to struggle with motivation, but now they look forward to every class because it doesn’t feel like a workout – it feels like an immersive experience. Another one went from barely making it through a class to smashing every sprint and hill climb within a few months. Seeing those transformations, both physically and mentally, is the most rewarding part of being an Instructor.
Can the size of THE TRIP be tailored to the club?
There are some standard guidelines and minimum requirements to follow for the best experience. SATS has three TRIP Studios in total: SATS Stureplan is the largest, with 3 projectors and 50 bikes. SATS Bromma Blocks and SATS Häggvik use 2 projectors, and can accommodate up to 30 bikes.
How has being an Instructor for THE TRIP contributed to your professional growth and development?
It’s taken my coaching to a whole new level. Teaching THE TRIP isn’t just about giving cues – it’s about storytelling, energy, and connection. I’ve learned how to create an atmosphere that pulls people in and keeps them engaged. It’s also challenged me to stay innovative, keep improving my coaching techniques, and always bring my best self to class. And honestly, the confidence and skills I’ve gained from this experience have helped me in so many other areas of my professional life too.
What advice would you give to new Instructors who are just starting with THE TRIP?
First of all – enjoy the ride! THE TRIP is something truly special, and the more you embrace it, the more your participants will too. Bring your energy, be yourself, and don’t be afraid to really guide people into the experience. Use your voice, your body language, and your passion to create something unforgettable. If you do that, you’re going to have an incredible journey ahead.
