What motivates people to exercise in a world of fitness apps and AI tools? The 2026 Global Fitness Report reveals a simple answer: human connection. Discover the importance of Instructor-led experiences and the powerful role you play in driving confidence, wellbeing, and long-term loyalty.

As AI becomes a bigger part of everyday life, people looking to get fitter still want a human – not an algorithm – in their corner.

That’s one of the key findings from The Les Mills 2026 Global Fitness Report, based on responses from more than 10,000 consumers across five continents. The report reveals that only 10% of people prefer an AI-created workout over a human-led experience. It’s a clear message: while technology can enhance training, it’s Instructors who truly move people – and are more essential than ever.

Across motivation, confidence, connection, and long-term wellbeing, the report shows that the human touch remains at the heart of fitness.

“Technology is shaping fitness in countless ways, but nothing beats the buzz of a live class and these findings show we remain social animals when it comes to working out,” says Les Mills Head of Research Bryce Hastings.

“Exercising with others maximizes ‘the group effect,’ which our research has shown leads to increases in a person’s enjoyment, satisfaction, and exertion.

“The Instructor is a vital part of this equation, as they’re armed with the knowledge, skills, and experience to connect with the individuals in the group and create a sense of ‘we’ in a class that produces a very positive overall experience. They take what we know from science and bring it to life for participants.”

AI may have a place in digital fitness, but the studio remains a space where human-powered habits thrive. You bring the X factor: coaching skill, real-time connection, motivation, and even the imperfections that make classes authentic.

Strength is booming – but needs a confidence boost

Strength training continues to surge globally, but the report found many people don’t feel confident enough to start.

Among those wanting to begin strength training:

  • 54% say conflicting advice leaves them unsure where to begin

  • 50% feel intimidated in the weights area

This is where you make the difference. Structured programs, clear coaching, and smart progressions – whether in BODYPUMP™, LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT™, or BODYPUMP HEAVY™ – give people the confidence and direction they can’t get from wandering the gym floor or following an app alone. You don’t just teach technique – you remove fear!

Wellness is now the main reason people exercise

Wellness has moved far beyond buzzword status. In 2026, it’s central to why people walk through the gym doors:

  • 94% say the gym is one of their most important wellness tools

  • 74% say prioritizing mental health is very or extremely important

  • 77% say the same about overall wellness

Whether you’re teaching a meditative experience like LES MILLS YOGA™ or a high-energy program like BODYATTACK™, it’s the shared experience, encouragement, and sense of belonging that draw people in and keep them coming back for more than just physical results.

What members want in 2026

Looking ahead, exercisers are craving variety, challenge, and enjoyment:

  • 54% want to try new ways to get fit

  • 62% of Gen Z and Millennials enjoy workouts that push their limits

  • Yet 41% still see fitness as a chore

The energy, atmosphere, and sense of belonging you create are what transform exercise from something people should do into something they want to do. If you teach more than one program, encourage members to try your other classes. If not, it’s always worth occasionally reminding them what else is on offer at your club – variety and progression are key to long-term success.
